It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. Do you buy old sculpts or new sculpts?

Aug 31, 2014

    1. One look at my collection would land me soundly in the Old School camp. I don't think there's any doubt about that. (That the two most recent additions to the crew are a pre-renewal Volks Yori and a DollShe Hound probably says it all. )

While I bought most of my CP/Delfs back when they were fairly new sculpts and still considered "current", the times have definitely changed in BJD-land. These days? Their highly stylized, anime-esque look is very, very out-of-step with the generally more-realistic direction that most companies are going. I'm okay with that. I'm not a huge fan of realism in dolls, to be honest, and I don't care for the look of most 'modern', more elaborately-jointed bodies (Including CP's own F60s, F65s and Moes-).

That said, I do have a trio of Iple EIDs, a set of F65 Itals and one ridiculous, gangly scarecrow of a DC Dolores mixed in with all of those Old School Cerberus sculpts and their equally out-dated Volks cousins... So, I'm not a complete dolly Luddite. I wouldn't say no to a sculpt I liked just because it was designed after 2006. I just find myself drawn mostly to a look that we don't see so much of anymore.

    2. Interestingly, brightfires, I see a parallel in my own collection. My Dollzones are all among the earliest of their sculpts because I don't care for the newer generations of their head or body sculpts. And I am not into realism in my BJDs either, which is probably good because I need to curb my buying anyway. Though the DoA marketplace always furnishes me with buying opportunities of dolls I DO like!

    3. I'd have to say Old School Camp too. I love the old style head sculpts, the more Anime style the better. I'll take huge eyes, thin pointy noses, and small mouths over super realistic faces any day! Lol, I would say that the fact that I currently share my home with 20+ little Volk's Kohaku and Hisui demons is proof of that. :-D

When I do fall in love with a newly released doll I find it is because they have that old style look and feel, like Luts Kid Delf Corni or the Anime style heads Luts released awhile back. I think that is why I find myself starting to gravitate more and more to Luts, because they're still releasing dolls with that Old School style.

It's sad, early last year if you had asked me which doll company was my favorite I would have told you Volk's, without hesitation. Now though, I'm not so sure. I used to spend a lot of time on their websites both the USA and the Japan/International one. These days, I hardly ever go there. The last time I checked to see the FCS offerings, I could not find a single MSD head, my preferred size, that I liked. The only sculpts they were offering were the more realistic ones, and they all seemed to be the ones with wide pudgy noses.
Then there's the new midi body...why? In my opinion Volks created the best mini sized double jointed body when they came out with the SDC boy. The joints are beautiful, they look good in every position, and the dolls have a range of motion and an ability to pose that is incredible! The SDC body is also slimmer, with more of a tween or teen look, something which those of us who prefer MSD sized dolls, had long been desiring. So why suddenly come out with this "peanut" jointed Midi body, that is also supposed to appear slightly older in age than the MSD? Why switch from the beautiful double joints like the SDC and SDGr bodies have, to those weird "peanut" shaped pieces that tend to gap at the top, and also make the joints look deformed when the knees are completely bent? I don't know, I'm just not sure I like the new direction they seem to be taking.

    4. I'm not quite sure, both I think? I have only been in the hobby since March/April, so I get a bit confused xD. I suppose its a bit subjective too. What constitutes "old" vs new? 3 years? 5 years? 10+?

I do know, that my first doll was a new sculpt (Luts Kid delf Berry). When I bought her in march, she had the new tag on the luts site. I do know that my Dollzone Shoyo is quite an old sculpt. My dollzone Aimi must be fairly old as well, since she was discontinued this summer (2008 i think?). And finally, I have my heart set on a Luts Kid delf Cherry which I think is an older Luts sculpt (2006?). So I think I lean more toward older sculpts, but stylistically, my Berry looks very similar to Cherry

    5. I buy a mix, older sculpts and new sculpts. For an example: I have many Fairyland dolls. I have newer sculpts but I like the older ones too. I think I will buy a Miyu, which is an older sculpt. But I have Celine too, which is a newer one. It really depends on what I think of the sculpt and what my plans are with that doll. For some ideas, an older sculpt fits better than a new one.
