Do you care if other people like your doll?

Feb 9, 2011

    1. So, do you care if other people like your doll?
Not particularly. My doll is mine; for me. If it were for them, I would buy them something that they liked whether or not I liked it. However, this does not make me invulnerable to thoughtless or mean comments. You don't have to like it, but unless you have some constructive criticism, please keep it to yourself.

Would you ever get an unpopular sculpt?
Of course. Just because a sculpt is unpopular does not mean that I won't enjoy it. As a matter of fact, I prefer that fewer people own the same sculpt as myself. (However, the reverse is true as well; if the sculpt is insanely popular, but I like it, its popularity will not hold me back from buying that doll either).

What would you do if you were me?
Get the doll you want. It's your doll, after all.

    2. Nope. It's nice to hear compliments, but the most important thing is that I love my dolls. What others say is unimportant :)

    3. These things, like the looks of the doll, are strongly opinion things. I have bought my dolls because I liked them, and almost each of my dolls have got comments both being cute or creepy, pretty or ugly. I donยดt mind each way, as what matters is if I like them, and I do. :) Quite often itยดs irl friends and family who doesnยดt really understand the hobby, so I donยดt worry about their opinions. But even still if doll hobbyists wouldnยดt like my doll, it wouldnยดt matter for me.

In recent times, Iยดve seen in another doll forum how some people (many of them being quite young and new in hobby) are asking if they should rather choose a popular doll mold to get popular themselves, and been worried what happens if they buy a doll they love but other people doesnยดt like it and they wouldnยดt get comments for their dolls or photos... That made me think, what are their reasons for being in the hobby after all. Iยดm sure it will be difficult to be happy hobbyist if you do things just for getting greet and admiring from other people. Itยดs not a competition, it should make you happy, not disappointed or sad...

    4. Of course I care, if I'm the only one who likes the doll, how can I be geeky about it with others? It always makes me sad when I like something that no one else does. And I'm not sure I would buy a doll like that, unless I was absolutely in love with it, especially if I lived with people that cared about dolls but didn't like the one I was planning on buying (as it is, my roomie isn't really into the hobby, so I don't have to care about her opinions). If I fell in love with a doll that just one friend or someone I don't live with, I might buy it anyway and just not bring it when I meet them, or bring it out when they visit, and be geeky about it with others that would hopefully share my opinion :)

    5. Well, I'm kind of used to it by now that others mostly find the things I like odd, creepy and sometimes discomforting. My family was not too enthusiastic about these dolls to begin with, but I didn't let that bother me one bit.

Also, it doesn't matter to me if the doll mold or the company is popular or not. When I got DikaDoll Autumn, there were no owner pics to be found but I knew this was the doll for me, it didn't matter if other people found him desirable or not. Now Dika's Autumns seem to be getting more popular though. ;)
I've heard lots of funny comments about my dolls from IRL people who aren't into the hobby (that my Autumn looks too sad or my Adler looks like some hobo off the streets X''D ) but that's probably only to be expected if the people don't understand dolls at all. Don't let that bother you. On a more positive point of view : I've found that my family-members have become more accepting towards my dolls as time goes by. Maybe they just didn't see what I saw in my dolls at first, but have come to look at the dolls "through my eyes" a little bit.

    6. It hurts a little bit when people go out of their way to say they dislike my doll(s), but I love them, and I don't care for the most part. If they comment on something specific, I'll have that little moment of 'aww, they really think that? Maybe they're right...' but then I'm like 'Naaaaaaah, I love you too much, I like you the way you are!'

Although it pisses me off when my friend makes fun of this one doll of mine ALL THE TIME, constantly calling him gay. I have nothing against gay people, but that doll just ISN'T, he even has a girlfriend! (Although his name IS April... but having a girly name doesn't really have any real connection to being gay and I'm rambling I'll stop now.)

So no, in general I do not care what people think of my dolls.

    7. I don't really care if anyone likes my doll or not, mostly because I know not everyone likes the character. I also know for a fact that I'm probably one of few out there who actually understands the character, and no I'm not talking about some stupid insane fangirl bs, but because of Superflat. I was going to put a whole essay here but I don't feel like I need to explain Superflat because it's off topic and there has yet to be anyone who knows the character or Superflat (and put together) as well as I do in all of the series' largest communities.

    8. It's not that important that other people like my dolls, but it depends on who is talking about them. My sister says that most of my dolls is ugly, but also that some of them are cute. It kinda hurts when she is saying they are ugly, but I have to admit that it really makes me happy when she is saying something nice about them. And also when I get compliments about my dolls from others in this hobby, it makes me really proud and happy, and if someone is saying something bad about them I try to don't care. After all, I am the one who is supposed to be comfortable with my dolls, not someone else.

    9. I do care what others think of my dolls, but not really to the point where it influences my decisions. For instance, I recently got a Dollmore Narsha Zihu, which is a relatively unpopular sculpt, but I got her because I think she's gorgeous. Even if she's not extremely popular, I still want to make her look as lovely as I can so that when I take photos of her, other people will see how pretty she is too! I want people to like and compliment my doll. It makes me feel good when others can see the beauty that I see in my girls. In that way, I do care what others think. Plus it really hurts me when someone says my doll is weird or something.

    10. I do care what others think of my dolls, but it doesn't affect which ones I buy, or which ones I take out and play with most. They are all for me anyway. Having others like them is just a bonus. I've had strangers and even my own family insult and criticize my dolls...but it never changes the fact that I love my resin family. It does make me sad if someone doesn't like one of my dolls, but I understand that everyone is different and wont like the same things as I do. :)

    11. my kids i love. and i don't care what people say and i never have. the last meet i went to, i had two of my dolls bashed horrible by people who did not know i owned that sculpt. oh, so and so looks so dumb. just a big dumb boy. he will never look good. and her. she has such a huge mouth. looks like she has walnuts in her mouth. i just can't stand her. meh. i stood there and smiled through the whole thing. my ideals of pretty are not every ones cup of tea. that's why were all individuals:)

    12. Your doll is your own! I'm pretty imposing and have a very sharp tongue... even if they do say something once, they never usually say anything negative a second time :)

      #beproud

    13. Absolutely not. My dolls are my dolls. I chose them because I personally love them and for the ones that were based on my OC's because they fit the character. Whether the rest of the world loves them or not really isn't important to me. If they do happen to like one of my dolls then sure, I'm ecstatic, but it's not necessary for me to enjoy my dolls. I've never cared whether people like ME as a person, so whether they think my doll nice or like him or her isn't a concern of mine either.

It matters so little to me that when I fell in love with my most recent doll (my Illusion Spirit Beata) and everyone told me they thought he was a plug ugly doll, I simply knew I had to buy him all the more because I seemed to be the only one who found him beautiful. I was going to anyway, but the fact that he seems incredibly unpopular simply made me adore him all the more and at that point I knew that I most definitely had to have him.

My ideals of beauty are mine alone, therefore other's opinions of my tastes just aren't important to me. XD

    14. For the most part, no. It only bothers me when people call her "creepy". Kind of touches a nerve.

    15. Yeah, I do want people to like my doll, but if people don't, it doesn't make me not like my doll. My husband likes my doll, so that's all that really matters to me :)

    16. Hm, this is a difficult question to answer.

There are just so many gorgeous dolls available and more being released all the time so I only ever think about buying the ones that really, really speak to me. If I then show that doll to family members, it's usually me saying "oh my gosh isn't she so cute!" rather than asking their opinion, and I don't think any of them would say anything really negative in that context.

At the same time the dolls that I like tend to conform strongly with modern standards of beauty in real people, so luckily for me most non-doll people will be able to see them as pretty too.

I do love to be able to share things with my hubby and family so it's a real plus if they like the doll too, but at the same time I'm very confident in my own judgement and "taste" so if they didn't like the doll I'd set about finding better pictures of her and explaining what was so pretty/unique about her so that they could come to appreciate her, even if they weren't 100% smitten.

    17. I don't really care to be honest. My mom found it odd that there were dolls out there that came with horns, so I just keep my horned dolls in my closet when she comes to visit (which they stay in there anyway, but still). At the end of the day, I don't like them any less because I know my mom wouldn't like them- I'm a grown, married woman and have every right to get what I want (provided I have the money, of course). I just choose not to wave it in my mom's face and/or cause unnecessary conflict over it.

    18. Nah. ^^ I hardly take photos anyway, and they don't leave my house so it doesn't matter at all.

    19. I would get it anyway! A lot of people don't like my Doll Chateau Hillary, but I like her, and that's all that really matters. I mean, It's my doll, so they should step off and mind their own business if they don't love the noodle arms.

    20. I don't care if other people think my dolls are ugly/bad/creepy (I actually kinda like it when they call them creepy! ;D), I get them because I want them, and nothing else.
