Do you display your dolls alongside your other collectables?

Oct 22, 2023

    1. Do you display your dolls alongside your other collectables? Or are they in their own cabinets?

Previously I used to display my dolls alongside my Sylvanian Families collection and have them sitting amongst the houses! But I recently bought a glass cabinet and I've since moved them into that alongside a few other types of dolls (Azone and Nendoroid dolls). Most photos I see of people's collections have them in their own areas/set-ups, but does anyone else like that "cluttered" look of all the things you love together?

    2. I keep all of my things together in one* cabinet! Since I've been given an excuse to show off, here's a picture:

*(The cabinet, as you can see, is about as full as it can possibly get, and as a result I have a mishmash of assorted leftovers scattered throughout my room. I genuinely have no idea what I'll do when the new doll bug bites me again before I've moved into a bigger space. I keep joking about putting them in one of those hanging planters but that may have to be the situation for real.)

    3. Kind of mixed?

Other than BJDs, I don't really collect much except video games. usually, 2-3 of my dolls hang out on the tv stand with the games so I have them around for most of my day. I do have a few off topic dolls. The majority of my BJDs are in my "doll room" (aka guest bedroom) on doll furniture or the chest of drawers. I do also have a Barbie doll, a Babysitter's Club doll and sometimes my American Girl Samantha on that chest.

My first doll is 1/4, while all the rest are 1/3, so I keep him in a corner display case that belonged to my grandparents. In that case, I display lots of things--gifts from family and friends, some art I've made, my off topic BJD dog that resembles my dog who passed away last year, things that belonged to people I've lost. Lots of emotion and memories in that case! And with Amir being my first ever doll, he, himself, carries a ton of memories and emotions for me.

    4. What is this... "Other collectibles?" :XD: I guess that's your answer from me.

    5. While I keep my other collections out (blind box Bonnies on the desk, friends' art all over, tapes on the tape deck), the dolls stay in boxes. Not for the space issue, although space is scarce, but because I get too distracted to work when they are out and need to use my braincell sometimes

    6. I keep my porcelain bjd with my other non bjd dolls that I inherited in my family in the china cabinet, and my bjd dolls have a little perch on the top of my bed headboard.

    7. I never had any desire to display my resin BJD, so no. I am also mostly a MISB collector, so most of my other collectibles are sealed inside their boxes. Which kind of also goes for my resin BJD, they are not sealed because that's not the nature of these kinds of dolls, but they are inside their boxes, inside my closet so kind of the same thing, I guess. DX

(I'm am a shameless hoarder, so most of the things I display are doubles or multiples I got of the same doll/figure, but to limit what I hoard, I don't do so with customizable dolls/toys larger scale action figures, and that includes BJD. However, and as I already mentioned, I never had any intention on displaying resin dolls. Particularly the heavier larger ones I own.)

      I am a big old weirdo. (;

    8. My favorite interior design style is Bohemian Maximalism, so the answer to your question is but of course! I love displaying my bjds alongside my other treasures whenever it fits in with their specific characters. For instance, my fullset Myou Macarena displays with my collection of religious iconography (she’s my rosary keeper) as does my beloved Luts 65cm “angel” boy. I have several msds who are displayed with my massive Lego Elves collection, as young pre-teens pretending and playing about the Elven kingdoms they one day hope to inherit. I have a lovely SD Luts Kathy who happily resides with my jewelry boxes as part of her character, and an SD Doll Chateau girl who lives alongside my collection of SD sized hats as their hatmaker. I have rabbit-inspired bjds who reside among my collection of bunny figurines. And then there’s my Dollzone anime-styled yosds who live amongst my gaming paraphernalia as befits their pokemon gaming characters. As you can see, I truly enjoy combining collections whenever possible, and my personal collections often inspire an accompanying bjd purchase and character. It’s been a truly fun and epic way to live and collect!:)

    9. Mine aren't on display, sadly. I don't have the shelf space!

    10. Kind of a necessity for making the most use of the glass door (cat-proof!) having display cabinets. Currently I have dolls on the upper half of the case and Transformers on the lower part, where I've moved the glass levels that wouldn't fit with the height needed for MSDs. However, my group is looking really squashed (blame the fantasy parts) so I know I'm going to need to store away some of the glass shelves and adjust things to make the most use of the real estate I've got. Part of this is also figuring out lighting for the lower level, so you can actually see who's down there.

    11. My BJDs have their own cabinet(s). The other dolls I collect have their own spaces, too. And the figures I have sitting here and there as I have room for them.

    12. Sort of?.My resin BJDs are on a shelf that doesn't really get a lot of sun at it - I need to invest in some UV blocking film for my Windows - and I do have other figures and plush around about. Generally speaking though, it's a yes as I don't really have a lot of display space so the collections need to be mixed if I want them on display.

    13. I actually set aside ad got rid of a lot of other things I was collecting once I got into BJDs.

If I have too many types of things displayed in one spot it seems messy to me? In a way that it makes me feel cluttered and anxious. If it's just dolls, I feel like I can focus and breathe. So I keep my dolls in 3 different areas on display, while my very streamlined anime/figure display is separate. And then all my other little tchotchkes (souvenirs, ceramics, kokeshi), are on the bookshelves and sideboard. Even the plants have their own specific area.

This is what happens when one wife is a maximalist who likes to see everything she owns at all times and the other likes the idea of maximalism but it makes them anxious so needs to be a minimalist in some way and impose order.

    14. I have mine on a shelf in my walk in closet, so they're not so much on display? It's mostly to protect them from sunlight and my very handsy cat who likes knocking everything over. I have a couple collections in there on other shelves (plushies, MLP, Undertale, books...) since I don't have much safe display area in my house (cat is a menace).

    15. When I had my dolls on display [no room right now!] I kept them in their own space, but in the same room as most of my other collectables. I'm not a fan of mixing and matching collectables outside of designated spaces personally - it feels cluttered to me.

    16. Mine are displayed among my childhood My Little Ponies. I think they look cute together.

    17. I've packed my other collectibles (tokidoki) away to make more room for dolls! They'll come out again someday...

    18. I don't collect "collectables", and I'm not a collector personality by any stretch of the imagination. I guess that makes me a minimalist?

Well - I do collect one thing besides dolls, and that's books - I've amassed and curated a home library since I was a teen. It's now my main backdrop to take pics of my dolls, which I think is wonderful serendipity - the older collection and the newer collection together! I have so many pics of my crew in front of my bookshelves or sitting on top of them. Here's my recent photoshoot, lots of books on display.

Oh, I also collect art prints and such. One day I'll have to rearrange my art wall and figure out a setup so I can take pics of my dolls in front of my prints.

    19. Nope... My books are on their bookshelves. My dice are in their bamboo boxes. My rocks, minerals and fossils are tucked away in their specimen boxes. My camera lenses are in their gear cases. My Nendo dolls are hanging around together on top of a chest of drawers in my sewing room... And my resin dolls are in their display cabinets.

I'm not a minimalist by any means, but I *am* a neat freak. Everything has its place.

    20. In a sense yes, I guess? My dolls reside in my bedroom on a shelf. But also in that room is my (probably close to 500 at this point) squishmallow collection, my akatuski shrine, and some of my instruments which I guess can be considered a collection in itself as I specifically have hyperfixated on having each and every stringed instrument known to man.
