Do You Dress Your Dolls to Suit You, Or Them?

Nov 20, 2008

    1. Well, my characters have styles of their own, based on their... well, on their personalities and such "D But I noticed one day that my MSD girl has a style I would have liked to try out...

    2. I dress my dolls the way it suits them. It was a bit of a puzzle in the beginning for a couple of them. But as their characters evolved so changed the clothing. Resulting in the fact that I will probably making the majority of clothing myself soon. Luckily for me the "must have" pieces that I come across are all SD and my dolls are all MSD's

    3. its totally for them like 90% of the time lol mine always seem to look crabby if i just dress them how i want lol or they wont pose and seem to be pouting. Like my one girl really didnt seem to like being in a dress at all, till my one guy friend dressed her *rolls eyes, she would always go all floppy if i put her in a dress and then pose nice if she is in pants.

    4. Both, actually. I have very specific character concepts for my dolls and all future dolls I plan to own, so I want to make sure that what they're wearing suits them.

For example, Shiloh (the character) really, really hates wearing pants, flat shoes, and anything with overt color in it. Thus, Shiloh (the doll) wears dresses, platform shoes, and usually sticks to wearing black and red. *shrugs*

However, despite all of this, I have to like what they're wearing, you know... since I'm the one spending money on their clothes. :D I'm not going to buy something that I think is awful and hideous just because it might work on my doll. With my dumb luck it would probably be even more awful in person and then I'd be stuck with it. *laughs*

    5. I don't really understand the character-driven part of this hobby, so I expect to dress my doll however I wish. Of course, as when dressing myself, if the whole outfit doesn't match (wig, clothes, shoes, etc.) than it's going to look silly!

As an aside, there are some outfits that I think are cute on a hanger but I would never put on a doll. Lolita outfits, for example, are super cute and frilly on their own, but once they're on a full-figured female model they just look creepy!

    6. When my doll grows up and gets a job, he(she?) can buy the clothes he likes. Until then, he is at my mercy!

      BWHAHAH

      MT

    7. I think our dolls have a character of their own and not one that we create for them... well technically we create their character... but you can argue that the character we create is based on their facial expression... so really they already have their own character when they come to us... except I guess for the ones where their owner does their own face-up on their dolls and makes them look the way they want... hmmm... did that make any sense!! it's really hard to explain what I mean...

      Anyway.... moving on :P

When I order my Galahad I was planning on buying him some period outfit but now that he is here I don't think he would be happy wearing anything like that!! He has such a cheeky, "ready-to-do-something-naughty" expression that a period outfit will look completely out of place on him... he is more of a casual / punk kind of guy... he has even demanded that I paint his nails black and pierce his ear! (I have done neither as yet hehe)

Lucifer on the other hand is more a "proper" kind of guy that can wear all types of outfits but would look completely silly in anything outrageous...

So... I wouldn't buy an outfit just because I like it... anything that I buy would have to suit one of my boys...

    8. I dress them to fit their characters, otherwise, to suit myself, I would have a resin version of myself in BJD. That was my first idea, but I quickly changed my mind (Before my first BJD arrived) and since then characters are the ones "to choose" their styles. There is a trick within all this. I love the characters I have (Most of them One Piece manga and anime series ones), even in their ways of dressing, and since the beginning, since I decided that I would have them, I knew their way of dressing in most of the cases and occasions casually - Kind of kind coincidence - would also fit me.

    9. I just fit whatever suits the way my doll looks like.
Maybe once in awhile I might just fit my dolls in fancy dress clothes for fun or something. lol.

    10. I dress my bjd in something that not only suits her but me too. So both I guess.

    11. I know my girl's style... but I'm definitely guilty of picking outfits that I'd like her to wear, rather than what she would. Though, it becomes apparent and she tends to let me know immediately... I'm trying to be better! ヽ(;´Д`)ノ

    12. Hmm...with my lot i dont know, they each just seem to have their own style. I can look at pretty outfits and appriciate them but know that none of my lot would wear it/or suit them. Does that sound strange? I can see an outfit and a lot of times one particular member of my crew would just so suit it...
Lets see, Lilith is my gowns and kimono girl, Marici is my fruits/colourful dresser, Ishtar only wears black/white outfits preferably lotitaesque, Ruby and Perrin are normal kids so they wear all sorts, Katie is old fashioned kids clothes. Rushlight is my emo black and purple are her order, Rayven is mostly white and pinks (i personally hate pink), layers, kimonos and flowing robes. My hardest two to clothe would be Jaegar...he pretty much only wears brown steam-punkish outfits and Ninde well he is a pretty unique guy so its gotta be green, flowing and natural looking.

    13. Hehe, for people like me that'd be a sort of vicious cycle. If you dress them true to their character, you're the one who made their character in the first place. Proof that I'm (or at least the current flippant way in which I make my characters) not ready to be writing any respectable novels, I'm totally the type who likes a certain style that a certain personality wouldn't go for, and be like 'oh, forget that, I like it today' or worse yet modify the character a little on a whim for silly things like that!
Adding on top of that for the most part, my characters 'styles' are styles I generally like. Kudos to people who have characters who wear clothing styles they personally dislike and keep with it!
I don't have a doll at the moment though, so speculator opinion and all. But I do know how I draw my characters, at least ;)

    14. I dress my characters to reflect the personalities I want them to have, but I often find that their styles often coincide with my own without me even thinking about it.

    15. It is to suit the taste of their respective assigned characters. But still, they are my stuff so it would hint to suit also my taste.

Of course, there are exceptions like when I have the urge to dress Miyoubi in modern non-lolita or the like outfits. XD

    16. I dress to please both. My dolls look good in some styles that I like, but not most. Like I love goth lolita, but neither Sloan or Edwin fit it. Sloan is sweet lolita and Edwin is more modern jock. I like both styles myselfr, but I would love if they fit more then one.

    17. Usually i'd say i dress my dolls to suit what i feel is best for their individual characters. Though i have noticed that the "personalities" i developed for a few of my dolls before they arrived changed after i had them in person.
As a consequence the outfits i ordered before they arrived turned out not to suit them as well as they had before. (and i'm relatively sure once Pacea's wardrobe is bulked up a bit, alot of the clothes she has to wear now won't be worn as much if at all).

that aside, there are a lot of beautiful company outfits i'd love to buy, but i just don't have a doll they'll work with.
I think a dolls features can also determine how an outfit will fit with them.
I.E. One of my smaller girls, the youthful playful look of her face makes it so i don't find "down to earth" outfits appealing on her (she doesn't have any outfits that aren't in someway, sexy, elegant, or playful), while her sister (very similar but a more calm look about her) can wear these clothes just fine and it doesn't bother me.
With Pacea (DZ Yume) i noticed a lot that the look she has, just doesn't work with certain wig styles/colors, and some of the clothes i thought i'd like for her, i don't think i'd ever put on her. (thankfully i held off on ordering the expensive stuff!).

So... guess it's a tiny bit of both? it has to fit their personality and still work with the doll it's self, which is more an issue for me then them (since i don't think they'll be caring much XD)

    18. Can I say both?

Emma has a dress because I liked a lot of Dollmore's dresses, but she also seems to prefer the dress I bought to the (horrible) skirt I made.

    19. i go with the caracter. the caracter fits what i like :)
OR i just buy a doll, that i think would look good in the clothes i saw and LOVE :3

    20. I dress my dolls how their characters would dress. Although, I refuse to dress them in stuff that I dislike. But its not necessarily how I dress myself. One of my dolls have quite a random and erratic style, and so she wears pretty much anything as long as it isn't mundane (she's pretty out there) and so she's really fun to dress.
