Do You Dress Your Dolls to Suit You, Or Them?

Nov 20, 2008

    1. Both.

Although my FF8 boys have yet to get their in game outfits, they wear similar colours most of the time. The weird thing is - Squall will not wear white clothes (other than teeshirts) and seifer will not wear black leather. They kick and fall over and protest any time I try to put them in something that isn't them. Irvine's a lot more easy going and tends to be my model these days.

I've gone through about 30 materials looking for just the right ones for Calder, and finally have several outfits for him in progress. Now I just have to actually get his body.

Dani wears things I like and things he likes. He's very flamboyant and ott, and loves the sparkle disco suit I made for him more than anything else I've made him.

And my girls seem to just grab materials any time I go shopping for stuff that are perfectly "them". I think between the two of them they'll have more clothes than all of the boys put together. Though I do get to steer them to which ever design i feel like making on that particular day.

    2. I think that at first, with Leu, I dressed him however I wanted to. But then I got to know him and he chose his own clothes..all my other dolls pick their own outfits according to their tastes, too. Sometimes it's a shame because I see something wonderful and I'd want them to wear it, but they wouldn't. Then again, at least it saves me money!

    3. Unfortunately for Merlot, I do dress him to suit me. For now anyway. His character is part of a set of twins and it's his twin that loves to dress up pretty and wear skirts and whatnot, but since I don't HAVE his twin, I'm making all those pretty clothes for him. And I'll probably keep focusing on dresses and whatnot until I have built up a little wardrobe that can be passed along to his brother once he comes. Then I'll focus more on his more reserved style. It's also easier, since I'm not used to sewing for dolls just yet, to work on skirts and dresses rather than pants and shorts

    4. Well Dee & Sanjaya dress to suit their characters.
I just got a cute little outfit for Yuri for the time being until i develop he's character a little more. I like to dress them up to suit them ^^

    5. them, definitely them. I couldn't dress them like I dress, because basically it would go against their characters, at least in some cases...

    6. I try to dress them to their character, and I've been lucky that their character's allow the clothes I like. ^_^

    7. My doll doesn't really have a character, so I gave her one dress, and a pair of shoes. Since then, I've bought her a couple of new outfits, but she seems to fit the character/personality that I originally put her into.

    8. It is probably a bit of both, I like to put my girls in dresses and they all suit dresses. However I don't really like loli style very much in my collection (though I like seeing it on other dolls) but I don't think it suits any of them very much anyway.

    9. It is kind of both for me. ^^ I made a character for my doll so....it'd be weird if I didn't like the clothing. But then again, I don't get things if I don't see it fitting right with my doll. ^^;; I wear only dark colors and mostly black, but the character I created for my doll likes bright cheery colors. As much as I'd love to go buy a nice black and red outfit or whatnot, I don't see it fitting well with my doll so I wouldn't get it. ^^;; If that makes sense. ^^;;;

    10. I was drawn to my doll while she was wearing nothing, a display piece at an anime convention. She had purple eyes, elf ears and reminded me of many characters I had made in the past. My little Eluned, RS Mei, looks awesome in what I have made for her since I brought her home. I can see her wearing anything I can think of, I bought her because of the similarities she has to characters of old that still jump into my mind. This is my only doll so far and I think that although I dress her in outfits I wish I could wear myself sometimes, she enjoys wearing what I give her because she suits the clothes I like, not the other way around.
      Hope that makes sense.

    11. I guess I try to find a compromise between the outfit I think suit their personality and the style I like. For example, they are supposed to be happy-go-lucky and cheerful, so I'll find a casual, cutey-style type of outfit that I like for them. But I usually have one main outfit for each doll and a secondary outfit to swap around whenever I feel like it. ^^

    12. i mostly try to dress my lot in clothes that suit their characters, but in the case of my girl i had to make her something to wear before i even had her because she was a christmas present and i wanted to show her to my family. it turns out that that dress was not really her style at all and i actually felt i bonded with her better once she was in an outfit that suited her.

    13. My girls seem to let me know what they want to wear. It is a lot of fun though getting the outfit right :-)

    14. I only dress up Eloise in clothes that fit her (save for a yukata at certain events, which is horrendously out of character!)
She's the type who dresses up on a daily basis (almost lolita, but a less frilly and more 'proper' style) and refuses to wear pants :P so I don't put her in anything boyish, unless I want to have a grumpy "why am I not wearing a dress, why would I wear this, you suck" kind of photoshoot XD And of course, bloomers, always bloomers.

Given the choice, I might stick her in cyberpunk outfits now and then, but that would be even more out of character than the yukata D:

(AHG, I just realized I'm talking about this thing like I already own her!!! I'm too lazy to fix my tenses right now, I need to not do that XD)

    15. Well, before Daniel reached my doorstep, I imagined a feminine, soft-spoken boy like me, but when I actually got him, his personality made itself so clear that I couldn't even imagine him that way again. I also didn't name him until he was in my hands and didn't expect his name to be Daniel Thavas Rose. I was about to order his clothes and such when his package was shipped; As soon as I saw him I knew to scrap that whole list.

    16. This is a really interesting question, actually. It's been on my mind lately!

I have dolls that I have characters in mind for. I know what their characters are and then I put them together. Sometimes they are characters I have used before and written extensively. And yet, when I put the dolls together, I find myself incredibly tempted to get them clothes their characters would never wear just because I think they look AWESOME. Actually, recently I went ahead and ordered some for one.

So I guess my answer is a little bit of both. I always like my characters and their styles, of course, so in a sense I am always dressing them to suit MY taste. But sometimes I do break character just because I think leather pants are freaking sweet. XD

    17. I guess it would vary lol. Most times however it's to fit my personal fashion sense :).

    18. My dolls have their personalities and i tend to dress them how i think they would dress due to their personalities
my girl is very girlie and tends to wear alot of skirts and dresses. My boy has a very indie look but i see alot of visual kei
stuff i know he would look awesome in but alas its just not his style hehe. :)

    19. I dress them to suit both me and them. If they look good in it, good for both of us. Which means I just tend to get normal clothing like jeans and shirts and stuff.

    20. So far I've planned and even made clothes to what I want to dress like. :c
