Do You Dress Your Dolls to Suit You, Or Them?

Nov 20, 2008

    1. I dress them in things they would wear, but I never buy something I don't really like... So I guess in a way it's both of our styles????

    2. It could be a bit of both. Depending on what your doll looks like, there's a certain personality that's already there that only fits certain clothing. You, the owner of the doll, had to chose that look so therefore you are picking a doll that suits the character you want. Does that make sense?:sweat Gee, I hope so. Anyway, to make this as simple as possible, you can dress your doll to suit you because it suits them.

    3. From time to time its a bit of both. I buy dresses for my boys which is a bit selfish of me, but I have a tan boy comin in which I will probably more consious about colour combinations of wigs and clothing before slopping anything random on.

    4. well both... lol They do have a style that is them that they end-up in all the time. But I love to make them cosplay. like my little girl. I want her to be a lolie but she keeps ending up as a tom-boy.

    5. It depends. With dolls I have modeled after specific characters, I try to keep them dressed in the style of their storyline. IE: I have two female dancers inspired by Persian belly dancers. As such, I'm not very inclined to put them in blue jeans and crop tops.

That being said, I design and make doll clothes for sale, not just for myself. As such, I routinely use the dolls I have to model different styles, even if it's not something they'd usually wear.

    6. I think I dress my dolls for myself. The personalities of my dolls aren't concrete either so I dress them in pretty much anything I want them to wear. Most of my dolls have fairly modern clothing though so when their clothes change the change isn't that dramatic but I don't mind them wearing other styles.

    7. I dress my dolls to suit them...I think. :P it is weird but these dolls develop their own character. I have 3 MSD boys and they all have different fashion styles, which is bad for me because that means I have to buy more clothes. One of them is my ideal doll (he's perfect and everything I want) I had in mind how I wanted him to be before he got here but the eyes and wig changed because I just felt it wasn't him and I finally found the perfect eyes and wig that makes him complete. For clothes, he likes the way I dress him :) my other boy is a punk and he looks weird wearing casual clothes and the other one is a skater...he looks weird wearing any of my other boys' clothes....so it's kind of 50/50 I got an image for them but they took off from there.

Sometimes I want to buy one of those beautiful dresses but I know my boys would *want* to kill me if I ever dress them up as girls ;p

    8. I usually dress my doll to suit their character, modern clothing, and I haven't run into that issue yet. However, if there is a dress that I like, my doll will to wear it. Compromise with them! "Wear this and I'll paint you a new faceup!"

I don't feel bad if I did this because, well, they're dolls, and I'm just trying to enjoy mine as much as I can! In a cheesy sense, it's a form of my love I'm showing toward my Dolls~

    9. I dress my dolls to fit their character but their characters are based off my likes and dislikes to some degree. For example I'm not a fan of punk so I don't think I'd ever have a punk doll. So I guess the important point is that I have a doll with a certain personality for every style of clothing I like.

    10. It need to match with there personality for me, but not all the time though.

    11. Personally, I have always been rather gothy-punkish in my clothing choices, and I have a serious aversion to anything pink. Yet Chaeri loves pink, wears ruffles and sparkles and all the girly things (though she does have some leather jackets and chain belts in her wardrobe). She's very eclectic in her clothing choices, and that's part of who she is. I can't deny her that, even if I roll my eyes every time I look at the fashion doll aisle and the part of Chaeri who lives in my head goes "Oooh, pink sparkles! Want."

    12. A bit of both honestly. I try and find clothing that suits the character but I also want to enjoy looking at it! So it has to be something I enjoy as well.
So as a consequence most of my SD dolls take on a gothic dandy sort of quality to them. The MSD's are gothic fantasy and the yo's are just cute but I have plans to make them uniforms and theme matching outfits.

    13. Both of us, in a sense. They are to my specifications, and I don't attempt to engender things I don't like (exception: see below). Sure, I've dressed Tantalus in more beige than I had originally intended his character to wear, and somewhere deep down I think he would still prefer I traded it out for black but it just matched that much better with the teal and he wouldn't dare argue with that logic. And with Zin in mostly black, it was just... overkill. Besides, despite his best attempt to pout over it, it suits him.

However. I'm currently trying to find a pattern for Lo's first dress... I, uh, don't go traipsing the streets in drag, that's one thing, but this dress is specifically supposed to be UGLY. And I like ugly things. And though I bought ugly fabric for this ugly dress today, it actually disgusts me that I'm gonna make this thing -- but SHE WANTS IT. Who am I to begrudge my 10th grade psyche if she wants this hideous frock? Besides, despite my best attempt to feign uselessness with a needle and thread... it suits her.

    14. Well, seeing as I am ordering dolls based on how well they can cosplay certain characters, & that I wrote backstory characters for them all, it's a loaded question. I dress them according to what their characters would wear & who they'd cosplay (Renji, my IH Bichun, for instance, is a bit obsessed w/Bleach & Abarai Renji...). Of course, I'm the one who decided all this in the first place LOL

    15. i dress to suit him :)
he hates it when i dress him to suit me (like crossdressing ...)
i tried to put skirt on him and he just kick me in the nose OTL

beside if i dress him to suit me i didn't get that feeling of 'him' when i'm taking his picture ^^

    16. I try to dress my dolls in what I perceive looks best on them as a result of their sculpt and personality. Occasionally I slip up and indulge myself by putting them in something that would likely be outrageous to them, haha.

    17. I've already answered this, but my response has changed a bit. :)

I tried to put Ces in some nice comfy tennis shoes yesterday. Despite being very loosely strung his feet started to kick, wriggle around and pop out of their sockets. They were the right size but *refused* to go on. I put his boots on instead without much fuss, but he honestly makes it a struggle every time I go to put shoes on him. He likes to sit around in just his socks, and I initially wanted him in big stompy boots all of the time.

Seraphine already had a wardrobe when she arrived. The first thing I put her in was a frilly pink dress, stockings and stompy boots. She looked lovely and smiley. The minute I tried to put jeans on her she started kicking and her legs began to curl up. She'll wear pretty much any type of shoes (she now owns the tennis shoes) but she will *not* wear pants, which I wanted her in most of the time because it's cold where I live and seeing bare dolly legs makes me feel colder.

So yeah, my kidlets do have a say in what they wear, although inevitably I have to like something to buy it.

    18. Well, to suit me of course on some level.
But then, if I don't feel that it suits my doll, or that her character would not like it, then she would probably not wear it.
My doll is very into 19th century garments, but as she timetravels into the future she has to wear more modern clothes, and I feel that she is really more adaptable than I thought.
I never thought I'd see her in leather shorts, boots and jacket, but as I tried it on, I found that it actually fit her.
It can probably also go the other way, I buy her a dress and then find out that I don't like it on her at all.

In the end, it's all up to what I feel like. Do I feel like it suits the doll? Yes or no?

    19. I dress mine according to character, because if I dressed them the way I wanted, they'd lose their character which is important to me. But with that said, I dress them the way I want to within their style range. If I totally hate something within their style, I won't put them in it, but I will try to find something that still suits them. I guess it's pretty split.

    20. I dress my doll to suit my tastes in clothes (which would be impossible for me to afford for myself)
