Do You Dress Your Dolls to Suit You, Or Them?

Nov 20, 2008

    1. For the most part I dress them for their characters, but Tandrelim winds up wearing the clothes I wish I could wear half the time.

    2. Both, I think.
Sometimes I think I dress them how I'd like to dress and their characters grow from that. Especially when it comes to the medieval-style garb, as much as I would love to have a wardrobe full of those dresses and wear them out, I can't afford to, so my dolls do instead...lucky them.

    3. It's definitely both because while I choose what I think would be best for each doll's individual style, I have to like it, too.

    4. All of my Luts dolls are from the Regency Era, so I try to find clothes for them that looks like it might be from that era (which is very difficult!). Because it's so difficult, I've had to get them some "casual" outfits while they're waiting for custom ones. But on the whole, I dress them to their styles.

However, I'm the one that decided they're from the Regency era because I love it so ;)

    5. They wear what I want them to wear, so no one really has a set style.

    6. My dolls wear what they tell me to make for them. I have very little choice in the matter. Only occasionally do I win and get them into something I would like to see them in.

    7. Yes, I tend to choose clothes of the style I like for my doll

    8. Well, I hate pink. So my adorable little yosd girl's favourite colour is blue. She wears a lot of blues and browns.
My MSD boy only really has two outfits, the set i bought from his company, and a kimono I made for him. I love the kimono, and I think he does do.

I'm waiting for two more girls to come, and I've been gathering clothes for them in the meantime.
The msd girl is going to have *shudder* some pink things.
The sd girl is going to have *shudder* some frilly things.

But overall, its too much for me to handle, they aren't going to be wearing ALL pink, or look like a tangled poof ball of frills. I'm sure i'll live ^_^

    9. It's a little of both...

      To suit me:
I am pretty picky about clothing construction and quality. I'm like this with my stuff, so I'm the same with my doll stuff. It doesn't need to be expensive, I'd rather get a bargain but it has to be made well and "believable". What I mean by that is; if I were to blow up an SD17 jacket to people size, would all of the detailing be accurate, are the pockets real, are there working buttons...

      To suit them:
Whatever I buy has to fit the character. I can't help it...some shirts/pants/suits just "look like" the image/personality I have in mind for my dolls. As much as I REALLY want them to share clothes (for some stuff they will), it's not really feasible because the styles I have created for my guys are diverse. And I really want them all to have their own unique look like in real life.

    10. I dress my current doll to suit her, and my upcoming BJD will be dressed to suit a character idea.

    11. I guess it's a little bit of both for me. On the one hand, I'm not going to have them dress in something completely out-of-character (unless they're new and I haven't had time to get clothes just for them yet and they're borrowing clothes from one of the other dolls). But at the same time, I'm not going to have them like wearing something I can't stand to look at. They're sitting on my shelf so I can admire and enjoy them, of course I want them to be something I enjoy looking at.

    12. Them. Definitely. I've had dolls completely reject things I had prepared for them (I'm looking at you, Lauren! I haven't forgotten those denims, you know) ... but I still like everything they wear, even if it's something I'd never ever wear myself (*cough*PINK*cough*) - as long as it suits the character, it works for me  They've all got their own individual style. They might share some things (basic shirts, leggings), but only if they're neutral enough colours to fit in with the other's color scheme as well.
I like making things for my dolls that I wouldn't make/buy for myself though so that suits me just fine :)

    13. Honestly my boy Kell sat naked for a while until his style just sort of seemed to show. He's a Soom Mega Gem so the choices are few but I did get him some basic jeans finally. He's happy with them but I know he wants the Air Pirate outfit I'm designing.

    14. I love frilly lolita and very 18 ~ 19th century looks, so I look for boy dollfies that match this. Personally its my own taste, but since I pick out dollfies that match my taste and can look good in regular clothes, Im happy!

    15. I'd say both for me and for them, and here's why I think so.

I dress my dolls to suit their characters. They may be wearing something that I personally would never wear myself; however, they would not be wearing it if I hadn't imagined them wearing it in the first place. I mean, I'm not going to dress my dolls in something that I don't think "works" for them as I've imagined their characters. It's okay if the outfit is not "my" style, as long as I think it's appropriate for the character.

    16. When I first got my doll I had all these ideas for clothes I was going to make her, but some of the stuff is going to have to wait because it wouldn't suit her, Clara is a feminine personality (lord knows I had no plans to give my doll a personality, it just happened) so she wouldn't suit girly clothes, she suits feminine and gentle clothes. I have a doll I want to buy and she's more vivacious looking so she'll suit the other things I want to make.

    17. I suppose it's a bit of both. I dress my doll to fit his character but I choose his character and his style. I wouldn't dress him in something I don't like.

    18. For me it's a combination of both. I dress them in clothes I like but match their personality as well. I also buy clothes that can be interchanged with any of my same sized dolls.

    19. I dress my dolls to suit their character. I mean...I wouldn't be caught dead wearing a frilly skirt but there's my YOSD in cute clothes. And my big guys...I can't wear a suit, but they're wearing them.

    20. Isn't it a bit of both? I mean, your doll grows and changes in terms of character development, just like we do. So I guess it might be a little of both?
I mean, what if a doll starts off as goth, but then kind of moves into a more glam rock style, and then eventually becomes just really formal and almost like something out of an old fashioned Disney film? Still the same doll, but they'll maybe change over time and then wear something from the older days of goth etc... You know what I mean?
So yeah. But then, I guess because I believe that you give the doll the character in the first place, and a little comes from what you "feel" from it as an entity, it's probably a mix of that too.
