Do You Dress Your Dolls to Suit You, Or Them?

Nov 20, 2008

    1. My dolls are characters from my fantasy novels. I purchased them specifically to make costumes and clothing I've described in the books. Promise to post photos as soon as I do!

    2. Some of each. I wouldn't dress any of them in a color I dislike, but I take their "characters" into consideration when making them clothes. Yin looks good in the feminine capris she has, but Blaze seems to be against the idea of wearing pants of any kind.

    3. I like to think of my doll as a projection of the things I've wanted to wear or how I've wanted to dye my hair or change my appearance, but would not be appropriate for my lifestyle. I have a serious job where I can't have pictures of myself wearing outrageous clothes, so my doll is like a projection of my wishes for all the things I want to wear or make. So she's not going to have a set style or clothing preference.

She'll probably look better in the outfits than I would anyway... :o

    4. To suit them of course! Well...as much as possible. The dolls come from a fantasy story, so if I want them to wear the clothing from that world I have to make it myself (when I have the time and money to do so). So in the mean time, so the poor boys aren't nude, I pick something I think they would wear if they were in this universe.

    5. Definitely to suit me, though if they really hate it I don't force the issue. That happened recently actually. Daisy, my Dai she hated the rainbow stripe dress I made her. But my blue Aira loves it so it became hers. Daisy's a bit of a Diva actually. I think she wants a beaded corset like the ones I make for my 16" fashion dolls. But that's a lot of work at her size and I'm not up to it just now. I told her we'd talk about it come Fall. She's been pouting a lot ever since. She's not real good at the waiting patiently thing. She always wants everything NOW. My other dolls are much more agreeable and far less spoiled, lol.

    6. To suit me.

My doll doesn't really have a personnality and theme so far. Maybe when I'll have more of them, shall I give them different specific styles.

    7. It kind of depends. I dress my boys in clothing that fits their personality. But it seems my girls are always very girly (which is the way i would dress if i could afford it). I actually had a bohemian casual plan for one of my girls and i put a black shirt on her temporarily and it fit her way better than bohemian. So now she's wearing a very v-cut long length black dress with blue ribbon trim and lots of tulle.

    8. I definitely dress my dolls to suit them. Recently I've had to put some clothing up for sale, because my dolls' characters have changed so much that the clothing no longer suits them. Even though I love the outfits, they just don't work any more!

    9. I dress them up to suit their character and characters which I created for them, are actually based on their sculpt. :) So some of them look better in kimono, some of them look perfect to classic style outfit... I make and purchase only suit them the most, not that because I really want for myself :D

    10. It is a bit of a mix for me. I don't buy outfits that I don't like, and I don't think I would make a doll that wore clothing that I did't like. That being said, sometimes I do have to pass on outfits I love because they simply don't suit my doll. My Anneke is a very simple, elegant girl, and she wear some gorgeous dresses! However, those lovely, Victorian, gothic dresses I love so much would not work on her. The are too dark and too busy. She is light and simple.

    11. I've /tried/ to dress them according to my tastes--that usually doesn't end well. I can pretty much look at something and go "___ will love this' or conversely, "___ will hate this". I had the most beautiful dress on my girl Athena:

And I was so excited it actually fit one of my girls!... And as you can see, she doesn't look very happy. Athena values wisdom, knowledge, and prudence--simplicity versus opulence. And yeah... -.- she HATED it. Then there's Mr. Pickybritches (Damian) who /throws/ wigs off he doesn't like. It's been a monstrous time getting him one. x.x

    12. A bit of both for me. Faye has certain tastes so there are tops and such that I've seen and wanted to buy, but i know she'd probably never go for them. I may break down one of these days though and get something. However, since she's an odd size (aka not a mnf) it's been hard for me to find her clothing that i know she'd really like. So we compromise. I buy what i can find that she'll probably like.

    13. To suit the character they shell. When I buy clothes for them, it has to suit their personalities. But since they are characters I've created, they generally don't like clothes I find ugly / styles I don't like^^ So in the end, it suits my tastes too !

    14. my dolls definitely each have a style of their own, and since it is often not what i thought it would be i'd say they pick what they want to wear! i have enough of them that i can usually find someone to wear an outfit i like or make, but i once brought home a dress that i fell in love with and no one would wear it until the new girl came and it was so perfectly hers, she will hardly ever take it off! sometimes i think the only say i have in the clothes is that of of mother who refuses to allow certain styles/colors in the house because i absolutely hate them, but i tolerate styles and colors that aren't my personal favs, just 'cause my girls love them and look so good in them.

    15. Hmmm if they are my characters, I made their 'personalities' up. So in a way, yes most definitely it is to suit some part of me. I wouldn't put them in clothes that I don't like

However I spend a lot of my time searching for something for my newest girl because every time I find something I think 'she wouldn't like that'. Now I know 'she' is just that an extension of me really but I feel it wouldn't be easy for me to have her wear something out of character for her.

And my new boy made me really happy because I finally had a doll who might consider wearing some trainers...but that's still undecided

    16. I suppose a bit of both. I want them to look like how I want them to, but if I like the sculpt enough I am willing to make adjustments. But I want to say that I dress them for me, because I created their characters and I want them to look a specific way :)

    17. I created the character to be a certain way so I dress the doll in a way that suits the character. I suppose that's more for me? I do try to pick clothes that flatter the doll's shape, though.

    18. I dress them to suit their characters, which are created by me, so I suppose it comes full circle. I could say I dress them to suit myself, but putting Uriah in a tutu or Gailan in fetishwear would suit them so terribly it would make me uncomfortable so I'd never do it. -Shuuuuddder- Generally if they are wearing anything other than their own specific modern clothing style, I consider it an out-of-character costume. When I do that, personalities take backseat so I can have a nice display piece.

    19. I dress them to best suit their character though sometimes it seems they have a mind of their own and they seem to pose better in a different style of clothing if that makes sense

    20. I usually dress up my dolls to suit their characters and my present mood. But I really like to see people sometimes dressed up alike with their dolls. For me it looks charming and very cute for some reasons.
