Do You Dress Your Dolls to Suit You, Or Them?

Nov 20, 2008

    1. Them, of course. Case in point: last night I was trolling Y!J to look for outfits for all three of them. Discovered a gorgeous Lolita outfit in antique lace and purple, just my tall girl's size [and wished it came in my size *_*] Except for the little nagging voice in the back of my head that said "Don't you even dare - I don't do Lolita."

:sigh I suppose it's saving me money, though. [But it was soooooooooo pretty.]

    2. I give the doll a personality that I want and then I dress them to suit the personality that I want them to suit. If an outfit doesn't suit my doll, then they won't wear it even if I like it.

Unless the doll wears every style...

...... I just dress them how I like, and this question is somehow hurting my brain hahahaa *need sleep*.

    3. If you dress your dolls in more modern clothes normally, but really love a frilly lolita style dress for sale, would you get it for that doll? Yes.

I will dress my dolls in whatever I like.

I will try and not deviate too much from what suits them (personality-wise or whatever), but I've also totally ignored everything else when I see an outfit I really like.

I'm not that big into the "character" aspect of my dolls, to begin with.

And, geesh, they are MY dolls and I get to have a say in their looks, outfits... and adjust their personalities accordingly!!! (And it's a BIG say that I have. My dolls don't get to boss me around!)

I view them as actors dressing up in costume and playing different characters depending on the situation and how they are dressed. I like various historical periods, for instance. Now, I could just say that they are elves and have lived forever and are currently in 18thC France or whatever, but story justification doesn't even matter enough for me to worry about it. I'll just dress 'em up and that's that. :D

They do have general personalities, and sometimes I feel they "won't like" something or other... but I always have the last word (only word, really. They are dolls and don't talk, after all!).

      -----

I was thinking... I've always liked costumes and dressing up (I'm not a cosplayer--that's 'way too recent a thing for me to think about). So it's not as if I do anything to my dolls that I wouldn't do myself. I mean, I'll try and suit my body type and try to dress in what would look decent on me, but I'm not doing ONE character all the time--or ANY character (so, not strictly cosplaying at all)... I just like costumes. And clothes in general. Same goes for dressing the dolls, I guess!!! :D

    4. My dolls each sort of have a "style", partly based on what I think looks good on them and partly sort of loosely based on their character, e.g. my minisup's character wouldn't wear a lacy, girly dress so I don't put them on her. My two regular minis I dress a specific way because that's how I want them to look -- one wears lolita dresses in white and pastel colors, and the other wears lolita dresses in black and dark colors. I think they look cute together styled that way.

Honestly part of the reason I do it this way is because it keeps me from hemmorhaging money. There are outfits that are lovely and I'd like to have but oops, I can't because that doll's character would never wear that! It's a handy way to stop myself buying every outfit I think is nice.

    5. My dolls wear clothes that suit their personality, for example Connor will only wear boyish clothes, Sativa only wants baggy, comfortable things and Ju Yon likes clothes that are cute - (Liam doesn't count, its enough trouble finding him clothes as it is without limiting myself).
Yet at the same time, their tastes are defined within mine, with a few exceptions I only own casual, modern clothing. They still have their own style within that, but its mostly dictated by my own likes and dislikes.

    6. I dress them however I wish. I got them so I could do a variety of costuming. That means anything from Royo inspiration to Regency. I am only limited by my abilities.

    7. I dress them to my AND my dolls' tastes. Since they are an extension of myself and my belongings, they 'like' what I like. : )

So lots of ribbons, frills and lace!

    8. I think for me, a lot of it is about what their character would like, but the reason that their character likes it...is because I like it. If I see something I really would love to get for one doll or another, unless it's absolutely ridiculous(and then sometimes if it is, with Padriac) I'll probably get it because if I like it, there's a good chance it fits my characters. Luckily though, so far the character/what I like overlap has been pretty good...but I expect to have some serious issues when I get an SD girl and want to buy everything.

    9. It really depends on what mood I'm in.. most of the time I'll dress Danny on how his character dresses.

    10. Its all about me. They wear whatever I dress them in.

    11. I plan to dress my doll in things that suit her, not me. ♥ I have enough fun dressing myself~ ♥ I don't need to enjoy it vicariously through her. :3

    12. I would love to dress my dolls to suit my personal taste in clothing, but I don't have a girl BJD that is not a puki size to dress in complex lolita dresses (too hard to make in tiny) and none of my boys would dress in extreme punk or goth or visual-kei-ish clothes.

I dress my dolls to suit their characters, but since I'm also the one making their clothes...ehhhh it's not an easy thing to do all of the time. I have an issue with one of my dolls in that I have a hard time designing something for him. >.< (Maybe it's because he doesn't have a faceup yet...) They must, however, wear something that looks good to me...and I'm an extremely picky person.

But when it comes to my dolls, I don't think I can go wrong with a yukata. Easy to make and easy to dress. :) Of course, my yukatas never turn out right. :sweat

    13. I force all my characters into clothes they hate at some point or another, so the same goes with my dolls. Novella is pretty versatile clothing wise, but when I get my next doll he'll have trouble preserving his masculinity as I want to dress him in shiny pants.

I also try to bend my friends to my will at some points... "Here, wear this! It'll look cute! Trust me!" xD

    14. I dress my doll to suit her. When I first got her I tried to dress her in jeans and such-like, but it felt so wrong. Haha, she even looked angry in those fashions.

When I put her first skirt on her though, it fit her perfectly (physically and character-wise). I actually had to go through a few outfits before I figured out which style she liked the best, which fit her character the best.

    15. This is 50/50 for me... Artemys wears alot of Goth-style clothes like I wear in real life, but he will wear just about anything I make for him. Then again, I would never make him something that didn't suit him. He usually wears dark colours, so when I made his winter jacket (that was light blue) I was afraid it wouldn't look good. But it looked great! his style and mine are very similar.
But then my Freuline, who isn't here yet, Has already accumulated a Style I never expected.
      Pink.....
For the record, I absolutely hate the colour pink. And I think Pink is VERY overdone with msd girls especially in lolita styles.. but I can't help it! Every time I go to the fabric store, I buy pink fabric for her! I even bought her a pink wig... So what gives? She hasn't even arrived yet and she's already subliminally telling me what she likes. lol!

    16. My clothing plans for Jon... I know what he likes and what he doesn't already, but he's the type to wear certain things to make me happy.
What he doesn't know yet is that my fashion designer friend will be sewing things that he will have to model... whether he likes it or not...

    17. Half and Half I dress them base on what I think will suit them and on stuffs that I would like to have on myself.

    18. I don't think any of my planned boys will be wearing clothes that would be out of character for them. Their personality (because they are so strong and very definite) dictates their taste already and it is - as I like to put it - entirely out of my hands. Of course, I understand that my characters are my creation, so there are some things that seriously will just never happen.

An example of this would be my boys wearing anything that isn't manly. I dislike girly boys as a rule, so none of the characters I create fit into that type at all. It's like 'I dislike this type of character, thus do not create them'. Which has nothing to do with my clothes preferences, but my personality preferences. From there, the boys develop their own sense of style and fashion based on their personality. Some are a lot more anal than others though, and that does dictate what style of clothes they will and will not wear.

I am not sure that makes too much sense (in a way I'm saying 'I make characters I like, then they decide what they want to wear - but I never choose their likes for them')

    19. My dolls have specific colour palettes and styles. I have a sweet mini girl who mainly wears pink and white to represent my very girly side, my other mini girl is a TopShop girl, she wears skinny jeans, funky tights, fun t-shirts and bright accessories. My Souldoll girl, Cynthia, is closer to my own style, she's quite bohemian. The boys are quite limited, Zee only wears dark colours, most often brown, and Rupert is a character from the 17th century, so he only wears Cavalier clothing.

In some cases they dress the way they do because I want them to, in others it's because it genuinely suits them. Melangell dresses in her TopShop style because I love the style, but also because it suits her very much, whereas Rupert wears his 17th century clothes because I want him to!

    20. haha exactly.
