Do You Dress Your Dolls to Suit You, Or Them?

Nov 20, 2008

    1. I have yet to build a wardrobe for my dolls, but I'm planning on dressing mine as young adults in a hip-hop, kind of funky, cool way ...lol! Seeing all the photos really gives one a sense of styles that blend very well with each other!

    2. I fall into the same place as mskat. I created the characters, so it's how I want the character to look, but at the same time, if it's something the character wouldn't wear, I don't put it on them. I need to get rid of some of my clothes, actually.

    3. My dolls would be dressed to suit their character and me.
Since the only doll that I have that actually has a background is Elgin (DZ Wing w/elf ears), I'm going to dress him based off of my own personal liking of clothing, and what his background would suggest him to look like.

    4. When they are actually wearing clothing, they usually wear what they want, but occasionally I torture them and make them wear fun weird stuff

    5. With me it's a little of both. Rhiannon is one of those characters where she'll wear anything from casual to overly dressy so it's fun with her. Adam doesn't have a choice right now as I'm a bit lazy to make him clothes, so he's dressed for convience. Caitlin decided to be a girly girl with some historical looking dresses mixed in, yeah real weird what happened there. She was supposed to be casual only with a dress every so often for occassions. The little ones are whatever I can fit on them. Four inch dolls get that type of attidue cause I go crazy sewing that small.

    6. I have had more than one person confuse me for a boy... not just how I look... but also how I dress. ..

but, most of the things I am planning on dressing my girl in will be very feminine ..

maybe I am living just living vicariously lol.

    7. I like dressing my dolls to suit me XD And majority of the time, they like it :aheartbea

    8. Both.
It depends if i have TIME to suit HIS NEEDS. Clothes wise...lmao

    9. My boy will be dressed to his taste. When I first thought about getting a boy I thought he would wear jeans and hoodies, however Duma likes to wear more old fashioned/formal clothes and wouldn't be adverse to wearing lacy collars and sleeves.

Niva is a bit more like me and can't seem to decide on a specific style, which is kind of fun since her wardrobe is pretty varied.

    10. Since all the characters all come from me, I suppose everything is done to MY taste. In the final analysis. As the Red Queen once said, "All ways round here belong to me." It's your doll collection; why NOT get a god-complex about it?

In some odd way, my dolls dress mostly like different boy-versions of me. Some are butch and some are femme and some are glam and some are no-frills-- but they're all in one of my stylistic veins or other. It's fun to see how many different kinds of men I'd "be" (22, at the moment). ^^

Some of them maintain style quirks that do NOT come from me, of course... Laika wears hot-pants I wouldn't be caught dead in.... Little Rowan wears orange constantly, but I look terrible in orange & never touch it.... But, then, we can't all agree all the time. *heh*

    11. Very well said. I agree. I would not dress my doll in a dress or outfit simply because I like it, it needs to fit who they are.

    12. well usually what looks good on them.. but this year im going to make them wear christmas clothes. lol im so evil.

    13. To suit their characters.

    14. Well I haven't created an actual personality for my doll, nor roleplay with her or anything; but still, I can imagine what she would or wouldn't like to wear...
that probably has more to do with her facial expression than with anything else though.
So, s in the end I dress her to suit me :sweat
or perhaps, to suit both of us..

    15. I dress them to suit their characters right now. They also wear something if I need a model for selling it, even if it's not their style. That said, I would probably never make a doll that liked wearing styles that were boring in my mind.

    16. Well, since this thread first started, my ideas of how I dress them have changed somewhat. First I admit it was what I liked. Now, say with my Soom Amber, with or without the antlers she is staying in her default. I can't see me putting a fancy dress or pants on her. I do still try on the same outfit on each doll to see who it suits better, but it is kind of up to them whether it really "fits".

    17. I dress them up to better suit the doll.

    18. For the most part, I dress my dolls to fit their characters. Of course...that doesn't mean I'm not guilty of designing a character solely to justify me buying as frilly dresses as possible. So, in a way, they still are dressed to suit me!

    19. either way it is dressing them for myself, because the personality of the doll is just a tentacle of my personality that is being projected into the doll. i am what makes the doll come alive and have it's own personal traits, cuz if i were to sell that doll to someone else WITHOUT telling them the history or personality of the doll, it would most likely change to be a part of his/her new owner, so whether i dress the doll to match my tastes or the doll's, it is all really just mine. if the doll doesnt like something, how do i know? they can't speak, and unless they come to me in a dream then it's just a feeling, yes? a feelign that the doll is uncomfortable. where do the feelings we feel come from? ourselves! we feel what the doll feels because it is us, so i dress my dolls for them, but always for me.

    20. Definitely for them, although I also enjoy the styles. Still, I would probably pick things that were easier to get a hold of (for reasonable amounts of money, or doesn't have to be custom made...).
Imbri insists on lighter colous, girly, sweet, elegant clothes. A pair of jeans, a sweater and sneakers would be totally out of the question. Crisium- she shares Imbri's body, but she prefers dark, sexy, although still very feminine. Melchior also insists on older-style clothing. Alicestor and Chase will be more flexible- just NO pants for Alicestor. No frills either.

It's amazing how characters can run off on you, and sort of take on a life of their own- and not necessarily what you'd intended. If I tried to put them in something they didn't like, I doubt I'd get the characters to agree with me (especially when drawing or story-writing).

I do, however, sometimes stick them in something funny, or cute (at their expense), but usually not for too long. I don't want to get 'bitten' by angry doll joints. :XD:
