1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

Do you ever NOT want to paint a doll?

Sep 5, 2014

    1. Aside from making his tongue pink, my Puki Pong who has been with me for four years is completely unpainted. I've no plans or desire to ever paint him, and when I inevitably get the Pong sculpt in PKF and LTF sizes, they will never be painted either.

Since I otherwise collect super realistic sculpts, they will all eventually be painted and remain painted. My Pong is my only exception.

    2. i have my first bjd, the tiny weeny Boo Giggle in white, and i am in love. He does not have a face up yet for exactly the same reason. He is just so cute and looks like he is made of bone or something. I adore him. I have a couple of other dolls on order (oh the wait!!) and they are in white as well (realpuki Toki and Roro). I think i will do their faces eventually, but i am going to live with them for a bit first, to decide what characters i want them to be.

    3. My dolls represent my characters so it doesn't make sense that they aren't painted. It feels like they are incomplete and I can't bond with them properly if I don't paint them. So unless I get something fantastical from Doll Chateau who look perfectly fine unpainted, all my dolls have to be painted.

    4. If my dolls are blank (which both of them are right now) it drives me nuts but also I love planning the face up's/body blushing in my head before I do it. I love dolls with character I don't know if she is a member of DOA but there is a doll owner on instagram called Elfgutz and some of the sculpts she owns I would never consider and the company images are really bland for most of them. But her face up's, blushing, mods, style just transforms them completely! If you have an instagram check her out, her work is just incredible!

    5. Only two times have I NOT wanted to paint a doll. The first time was Comrade, the 50cm Obitsu Boy I bought. I just didn't connect with him and didn't want to do anything for him. The second time was while my hands were trembling very badly and I didn't want to screw it up.

    6. I find blank faces vaguely unnerving. If I can't bring myself to paint it, I'd send it off to get painted.

    7. Yes! My two Lumedoll 1:6 dolls do not have face ups. One of them did for a short time, but I preferred him without and removed it. The other has never had a face up. They are like two tiny sculptures to me, so I like the sense of 'unreality' which having no face up conveys. All my other dolls have face ups :)

    8. Normally, I really prefer face up on a doll. However, the head currently occupying my Obitsu 48 (Misuzu) got the nickname of "Little Odo", as she looks a bit like that beloved character from DS9 - therefore I am really thinking about sparing that head from my faceup practices ;)

    9. It depends on the doll. I once saw an amazing doll in ebony resin (wish I could remember the sculpt) that I couldn't imagine even trying to put a faceup on. She had so much life and personality in her face and the rein (make that RESIN) was such a perfect jet black color that she didn't even need it.

    10. It really depends on the doll...but im low on funds a lot so I get used to seeing my dolls blank. I just got a mnf mir in tan & he's GORGEOUS blank! I love studying all the little details that sometimes get hidden with a face up. All in all I'd prefer faceups but I don't mind waiting a while with a blank doll..

    11. Very few of my dolls have face ups yet. I still love them and think they are beautiful but no, I would not want them left blank. A face up is a huge part of their personality, too much for me to skip it.

    12. The first time I got a blank sculpt, I was out of money and I liked him blank so I left him like that for a long time. We bonded during that interim, but after I painted him, I fell in love with him like a hopeless fan. Now, if I don't paint the head then that character isn't complete and I can't bond with them.

    13. I prefer my dolls to be faceuped, just because I like the realism that it gives their faces. I love dolls that look like they could be little people, so I probably wouldn't leave a sculpt blank unless I really liked the flat look on them. Maybe if I got a really stylized, unique doll like Doll Chateau makes, I'd consider leaving them blank.

    14. I think even if I had a doll that I intended to leave "blank," I would still probably go in and give it some minimalist shadowing and blushing to make the details of the sculpt stand out. Some of the Doll Chateau sculpts would look very compelling as "living statue" sorts, I think.

I've also seen some dolls with the bare minimum of blushing and face-ups, and it makes for a compelling look. (Wotan's Beryl is one I can specifically think of off the top of my head.) It can give them a very ethereal look.

But, no, I think on the whole I would put some sort of color or shadowing on a doll even if it wasn't a full face-up.

    15. I think I prefer face upped faces, but saying that, after seeing DC Barbara blank I wanted to order another one to potentially leave that way. :P

    16. There's a few sculpts I love blank and naked, Dollshe's are some of them. But I can't justify the price for what would effectively be just pose-able roman statue.

    17. My MSD Kazumi is a blank face. I take her out a LOT into places my other dolls will NEVER venture, so it's easier to lug her around and take the risks because she has NOTHING to ruin on her. I feel better about her possibly getting a little scratches or dents (I've even taken her out in torrenting rain for pictures and threw yes THREW her right into a snowbank for the sake of photography) Things I'd NEVER do with my other dolls. If you have a doll you consider the "zero risk" one then it'll likely be a blank.

    18. I think I might, but it would definitely depend on the doll. No faceup=zero worries about damaging the faceup. I think the face up adds expression and make the doll look more emotional and alive. But many dolls can look very beautiful without it.

    19. I prefer having faceups. Most of mine are just blank because I can never settle on one idea. It just keeps switching so yeah i still have dolls i got last year waiting till i can make up my mind.

    20. I've never wanted to have a doll blank. The faceup is their personality imo, and it either makes or breaks the doll for me. Either commissioning a faceup or painting one myself is one of the most enjoyable parts of owning a BJD. I feel like it truly makes it mine.
