Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Do you find BJDs calming?

Mar 9, 2009

    1. Heck yes, they are relaxing! I love to cuddle my Angelo when I'm upset and crying and it makes me feel a lot better. Even just having them sitting beside me or in my lap while I type or whatever is very nice. I really enjoy brushing Angelo's wig or undressing and redressing Lily. The dolls are shells of characters that I've spent years developing, so the fact that the represent a major and effort-full accomplishment helps too.

    2. Definitely. For one thing they're a way for me to channel my creativity, and for another they're beautiful and beauty is important ... beautiful things make me happy (can be music, dance, dolls, candles, snowy landscapes, flowers ... you get my drift. ;)), and so does making things. Then what chanarivka said goes for me as well, these characters have been hanging out in my headspace for the past eighteen years or so, and it's so cool to have them live with me in resin person ... so they count thrice on the "what makes little Jany happy" list. :)

    3. Yes, very, except when they are glaring at me for not making them/buying them new stuff. With the dolls, I can be creative and enjoy my hobby again, it's very relaxing to be making something small and "instant gratification" that will look good on a doll. And seeing all the other collectors and what they do with their dolls is always enjoyable. It's wonderful to look through the photos and see what everyone has done and how many different dolls can come out of one sculpt. When the world gets boring, BJDS always make it interesting again.

    4. I find my dolls and their presence very calming. If i've had a bad day or been put in a bad mood, I nearly always grab them down off the shelf and sit with them, change their outfits or style them and take pictures. It calms me and cheers me up!

    5. I find BJD's very calming, like when I'm sewing and putting her clothes on. Most of all I find it most calming putting her into poses.

    6. So comforting... only problems come when i cant get those pants to fit right when sewing or lusting after new things when i have no money. But just working on dolls eases my mind. my precious toys have always done that for me.

    7. Yes I do <3 everytime I look at them lying on my desk I get really happy :)

    8. I have to agree, they are very calming. I'm not sure why though. Anytime I need to "escape" I go to them, and have a nice time with them. They definitly take off the edge of stress most of the time.

Does anyone know why we get so calm with being with our dolls? Is it just because it's something we love and surround ourselves with them, making us calm? I find it intriguing!

    9. I suffer depression, high anxiety and a chronic pain condition, my doll always makes me smile no matter how anxious, sad or in pain I am. Sewing for her or just browsing websites makes me feel like I have focus again.

    10. I think that my dolls do have a calming affect on me (especially my tiny Phippa). Just looking at them gives me a sense of peace.

    11. I find the hobby incredibly calming. I love doing faceups, deciding on clothes, taking photographs, and even just browsing photos of other dolls. It's quite creative and any creative endeavor is relaxing.

      Though...restringing is a bit of a pain!

    12. Anything that I can focus on very intently for a period of time has that effect for me, rather it's tinkering with my dolls, weeding my garden, playing a game (Particularly a more meditative game like Flower or Journey-) or painting a gaming miniature.

That said, there are a few of my crew who do end up being comfort objects. Al, my favorite Breakaway, is probably the best example of that. He's the next best thing to chicken soup when I'm under the weather.

    13. I'm not entirely sure if I find the dolls themselves calming, even though I adore them.

But making clothes for them? That is very calming for me. Designing them, making them...stitch by stitch, something pretty for a doll to wear? Yes.

So! I suppose they are calming for me, too! lol.

    14. yes I could sit for ages just messing with mine its weird it makes u feel like a 5 year old again even though im only 13 :)))))

    15. They are very calming except when it comes to customizing they are stressful :...(

    16. Although sewing is frustrating, holding and posing my two bigger girls is soothing. They aren't big enough to hug (30 cm) but I love holding them in my hands. My 14cm Emoji is calming in a more symbolic way, as she has claimed the shoes of a doll that weathered some rough times with me when I was a kid. I had cancer at age 5 and spent alot of time in the hospital, often playing with that doll. Those shoes (hot pink Stacy boots) seem to say "Yes I'm different, but I don't care." It's sort of reassuring to have her seem to say that.

    17. i guess it's super calming. everytime i lie near Soyala i fall asleep xD

    18. I can get frustrated when attempting doll related crafts but brushing my doll's hair and dressing her in different clothes is very calming to me. Taking and editing pictures of her is very calming to me as well.

    19. I find my dolls motivating and energising, rather than calming. Which is just what I need, since I tend to get depressed and frustrated without a project to focus my attention on. Although I suppose it is still a form of calming, then, since they prevent me from feeling frustrated. I guess if you mean 'calming' in the sense of 'reducing tension', rather than 'calming' as in 'peaceful or tranquil' then yes, I do find my dolls calming :)

    20. I consider my dolls calming, that's why I liked them from the start. While life spirals out of control, you can dress them, pose them, control them.
