1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

Do you have a doll buying rubric?

Mar 24, 2024

    1. How long can someone get away with waiting in the BJD hobby? I think this is a leftover of the mindset I've got from the figures hobby where you book a preorder today or buy from scalpers tomorrow, but I am taking decisions with some urgency as if the things I'm deciding on will be gone if I put them aside.
On one hand it's good because it helps me prioritize, like, which one would you save from eternal oblivion? But there really are a couple dolls I'd just want to think about next year. What's a common time span for planning on a doll that isn't a limited set?

    2. My rubric is pretty simple and straightforward --

      1. I spend an extended period of time thinking about a doll, and go back to it many, many times, looking at photos. I consider an extended period of time to be a few months, and can include finding myself regularly checking auction sites for them

      2. I can easily picture a character for said-doll. I connect with my dolls by envisioning a style, name, and general personality for them. If I find myself doing this naturally for a specific sculpt, it's another sign

    3. I think I have two rules so far!
Character comes before doll: For example: For my first doll I picked a generically cute sculpt since I was impatient and bought it before the character was created. As his character developed over the years, especially with all of the art I've drawn of him, I've found that the sculpt I chose simply doesn't look how the character looks in my head and in my drawings. I'm thinking of re-shelling if I find a more fitting sculpt, but I do have that "but he's my first doll I can't change him!" guilt lol.

This one is probably the most important,
I have to be absolutely in love with the BLANK sculpt: Have you ever seen promo photos and thought "WOW so gorgeous I want that doll!" and then research photos of the blank sculpt and just go... oh. Or see the same sculpt with a different faceup and go... oh. I also once bought a doll with the company faceup purely because of the promo photos and couldn't find any owner photos, and the doll looked nothing like the pics. I'm also thinking about re-shelling him. Especially since now I have dolls where I look at the blank head and go "WOW so gorgeous I want that doll!" now I'm want to feel that way about them all!
