Do you have a price limit on certain sizes of dolls/clothes/shoes/etc?

Jan 4, 2015

    1. This is similar to what I go off of as well. My grail was my Soom Amber, and I don't really want to spend more on a doll than what I paid for her secondhand. I haven't yet, but if there were to be some new, super awesome BJD released, I miiiight reconsider. So it's more of a soft limit. I also have a small wardrobe for my dolls, where most only wear one outfit. I suppose I can't really see spending more than $250-$300 on an outfit, though I haven't spent that much yet. I don't want to spend more than $60 for a pair of eyes, and the same goes for wigs.

    2. Once upon a long... long time ago... my friend and I had made a price table to keep our purchases reasonable... let's say it didn't last very long. xP Besides holding off buying a doll you really love just because it's a bit above or bellow a limit is a little silly...

Same goes for outfits. Most elaborate/detailed outfits range in about $50 for tiny dolls and go upwards all the way to $500 for large, so I'd never own any clothing I like for my dolls if I were to stick by a rule there.

I do have generic limits for wigs and eyes, however. For wigs I am not willing to spend over $50 even for the greatest quality alpaca fiber (because I can make nearly ten wigs if not more for that price out of the same fiber myself) and the same limit goes for eyes. I can hardly see any difference between high quality urethanes that are sold for over $50 so I find it redundant to spend $250 on a single pair of eyes. A general limit I have for faceups is $100, I can do my own faceups but that is the top price I am willing to pay for someone else to do it.

    3. Hahah I judge it by comparing it to Human prices (talking about clothes and shoes etc. I don't buy people XD hahah) if I see a pair of dolls shoes and I wouldn't pay that price for the same for myself I probably wont. Useability, quality and chances of me keeping it for a long time play a part into it. I sew a lot of my guys clothes since...well I can and I can make most things just by looking at a product and figuring out the pattern from there XD

    4. For me, first, never spend more than my budget that can be spend on fun without stress or worry at the time of purchase. Then there are other considerations, such as price comparison, similar items' availability, price justifications, opportunity costs, or even make vs buy analysis. But the first rule is the only hard limit I set for myself on buying doll related stuff, the rest just depends and changes with time and situation. I wouldn't buy something I feel is too expensive to be used and enjoyed, but that amount changes with time, income, and experience.

    5. My limits are less of a concrete number or "set price" and more of a budget consideration. There are some months when I couldn't spend $10 on doll stuff due to other more important financial considerations. Then, there are other times when my budget allows me to spend more. I do have kind of a 'mental block' about spending $800-$1,000 and upward on just a doll without accessories and clothes. I think my most expensive one was $600 before accessories. But still, it's not like I wouldn't spend $800 at some future point if my finances allowed.

    6. From my history, I had spent over 1000 $ for SD size doll because he was my wish doll and max. 230 $ for outfit, 50 $ for shoes and around 30-40 $ for accessory. It really depends on how much I like that doll but I won't spent over 1200 $ and definitely not pay more expensive than a doll for outfit. That will be too much for me :D

    7. i guess i do
but before i reach that limit, i probably already feel that outfit is too expensive already...
so i have never experience over my price limit...

    8. Since I'm not rich and I hate waiting for layaway, the amount I spend on a doll is dictated by how much I can afford to spare from my monthly retirement check. So far the most I've paid for a doll is $250. That's my limit for any size doll.

Since I sew for my dolls, I don't spend any money for clothing. For shoes I am very picky and they have to be perfect or I won't buy them. Same with wigs. My money is limited, so I am very picky and if I can't afford it , my dolls do without.

    9. @ParlourGoddess it felt like reading my own writing :D I also try to save on clothes and things, so I don't spend money on things I can do on my own. And ever since I became capable of making the majority of clothes (lingerie, overcoats, dresses... just everything;) I became very picky. When it comes to wigs - I admit, I wouldn't go above 25 usd. Shoes? Oh... let it be 30 :3 But they really must have this something then.

when it comes to dolls... At some point I just realised that all the sculpts that I want, even if I hybridise and find some 2nd hand awesome deals, they're all around 400-450. And that's my limit, I suppose, for the time being. Maybe when I become rich and all... I'll be bale to shell out some 6oo bucks or so ;) . When I recently realised that one of my boys would cost around 600, I just gave in and sold the head :3 Not because I couldn't afford his body, but simply because i thought it was already unreasonable in his case (he wasn't a major character or anything...)

    10. Doll clothes are super expensive if you think about it. Well, it depends on where you get the clothes. If you are on Etsy, it's going to be fairly cheap. Alice's Collections is super affordable as well. I had been trying to find shoes I liked when I stumbled upon a pair of gorgeous black gothic-like heels. I fell in love! They were only 16$ (less than the sweater I bought).

For dolls, I think the max I would EVER spend on a doll is $550. I am in high school and there's no way I'd be able to buy a 800 or 700 dollar doll. I don't see that happening. That goes for ANY doll size. I've seen $600 MSDs and I was like wtf man. I can't even imagine how much the SDs would be lol PLUS SHIPPING? Nah. Not for me.

    11. With me it tends to be based on how much I really want that doll, outfit etc.... I know I have spent to much on some but I really get a lot of enjoyment out of them. I also tend to go for 65cm+ dolls and they can add up fast. If I think I can afford it and I really want it then I go for it (with a bit of guilt in there) and get the thing.

    12. I hate limits because I always break them...

      My limits are/were:

      No SD more than $800
      No MSD more than $500
      No tiny more than $300
      No shirts more than $20
      No pants more than $30
No wigs and eyes more than $20
      No shoes more than $50

      What I really did:

I'm waiting for Switch Soseo, he was $1100.
I'm willing to give all my money to Sadol because their clothes are 100% good quality and I'm always 100% satisfied with the texture, color and fit. Waiting on an order with a $350 total.
I found urethane eyes and I have paid $50-$70 for each pair because I love how they look in real life and in photos. 8 dolls wear those eyes.
      Wigs...I once paid $120 for one wig....and I'm waiting for 3 wigs that are $70 each.:shudder I still can't believe I did that and I hope they're worth it.
I'm purchasing a lot form Nine9style and TTYA...they're not cheap but quality is good so it's worth it.
My Soom tinies were more than $300 (and so worth it!)

I think the only limit I haven't broken has been the one for the shoes (no more than $50) but I know I will break it if I like something enough.

    13. I paid $80 for the limited original outfit that I miss out for my lati doll. The price is actually higher than the original price but it can't be help since I really love it and it is a hard to find one > <;;;.

Beside the limited things, I usually spend around $10-$15 for my lati.

    14. I have not yet spent over $1000 for a doll, and it would have to be something pretty amazing for me to do so. I am a skilled seamstress, so I don't spend any money on doll clothes to speak of. Oh, occasionally I fall in love with something by Freedom Teller but that is about it. Shoes, I think the top price I have paid is about $75. I like silicone eyes, and they are not bad, maybe $35 ? I am learning to make my own wigs, so that it is just the cost of the fiber. I probably spend more money on BJD furniture than on most things... I don't think I would go much higher than $200 on a piece.

    15. I had to think about this one for a while... I think it's more a subconscious limit than one I really keep in mind, but I tend to top out at certain price ranges for different sizes. Most of my collection is minis, with my MNFs being the "most expensive" of the set (though it works out that neither is exactly the price of a full new MNF due to some secondhand and event parts involved). My subconscious limit on the cost of a mini is "about the cost of a MNF," and I struggled hard with whether to even go above the base cost and add the sleeping head. For the most part, I seem to max out at about $300 with them (with the MNF exceptions), and I tend to base what I am paying on my "perceived value" of the specific doll.

For the tinies... well, they're all either LTFs or Soom Teenie Gems, so there's not really a "price limit" there, though the price of some TG sets can make me hesitate. For the in-betweens, they tend to be case by case decisions, and again, it's the "perceived value" rather than a true price limit on them.

I think my ultimate "I will not pay more than this for a doll" will end up being FairyLand's F60s, whenever I do finally decide to order them, but that'll be a special occasion, rather than something I'm comfortable doing on a regular occasion.

For clothes and shoes... again, it's "perceived value." I don't feel right paying $30 for shoes or jeans, but I have paid $100 each for a couple of full outfits, and felt they were worth the cost.

    16. I am picky when it comes to clothes, so I nearly do everything myself (execpt for the shoes).

      But to spread it out:
Heads (I mostly want Heads, since I really have the Sculpt I craved for already): 200$
      Hands: 150$
      Shoes: MAX. 30$
Full outfits (If I really should buy one): MAX. 150$
Eyes and Wigs: 20 - 30 $ (it depens on wheter I really want it or not...)

But mostly I think: Why should I spent 30$ on a Shirt for my doll? I wouldn't buy myself a Shirt for 30$!
From time to time I make execptions and buy a shirt or trousers. But only if they are cheap and I can afford it.

    17. I'd really like to say that I do, and most of the time I really do have these self-imposed spending limits but I'm sure that if I saw a 2008 YoSD Megu for anything less than $900 that would all go out the window (provided that I had enough money to pay it all at once at the moment).
For everything other than dolls (and sometimes clothes) I do have limits that I most likely never go over.
      Clothes: sets=$150, tops=$30, bottoms $40, socks/underwear=$20
Shoes: $30, if it's a particularly nice pair and I know for sure that it is not made with animal-based products then I might go up to $40-$50 but that would be the absolute maximum I'd spend on a single pair of shoes
      Hands/Feet: $60
      Eyes: $30-$40
Wigs: $30, I'd be willing to pay more for to have a spare Megu wig or for the Liselotte in my closet room ver. wig

    18. I actually don't have one. Maybe I should...
But obviously I don't like spending a lot a money, so unless I have to have it, I try to find an alternative.
But what if it's like... a custom order? How can one pass up the price? What do you think?

    19. For a doll, I'm not going to spend more second hand than new, if the doll is still available from the company. I know some people would pay extra for a like-new doll if they can just skip the 3 month waiting period and dealing with the company, but I'd rather wait.

I've limits on heads and bodies... same with clothing but if the doll/item were really special, limited, a one-time-chance and such... I might give in...
Shoes are really hard for me to decide because there's a ton I love that cost 50-70 bucks but I'm not really willing to spend that much ugh... shirts I'm looking for about 20$ max, pants maybe 40$ max if they look really good.

    20. As someone relatively new to the hobby, I'm still feeling my way in all sorts of areas. I have 3 MSDs, one of which was second hand and the other two were special offers with face up included. Likewise a lot of the clothes I've bought have been sale items, but now I've bought some patterns and plan to make my own.

I've never paid more than $200 for a doll so far, or $25 for a wig. This is not my only hobby!! We are retiring and downsizing soon so I will have to make some decisions about what is really important to me, and which dolls I REALLY want, given both limited budget and space.
