do you have name themes to your dolls?

Jun 5, 2021

    1. When naming things do you like to have a theme to them? Do you have a name theme for your dolls? How do you decide? :0

for a lot of ocs I have I use flower names, and throughout pokemon games I've used composers, food, other pokemon (like a Zorua named Lugia lol), and lately in monhun I've been using star names! I've also been thinking about continuing the star naming scheme with future dolls. :XD:

    2. Sometimes! :3nodding:
It depends on the group of dolls.

For example, all of my Dollfie Dreams have names that start with "P"
      Penelope
      Polaris
      Persephone
      Potya

It's like a fun game. Hehe.

    3. Lol I use a star theme too.
I have Polaris for my first home made bjd (off topic) and then Deneb (off topic).
Then for on topic, I've had
      • Rigel, souldoll seojeongu (no longer owned)
      • Capella, Luts junha
      • Spica, doll Chateau Mini Bella
      • Luna (my grail and not quite a star) Angell studio greater snow sp mermaid
      • Alpha Centauri (not a proper name like the other since it's a practice head) doll family a Karl
      • Sola, Angell studio white deer mermaid
      • Antares, Ringdoll Ksitigarbha Virgo
      • Altair, Luts elf Diez
And then incoming Saiph, volks Lucia~

    4. While I don't have one that covers everybody, I do have themes within certain sub-sets of the crew... All five of the guardian god-beasts, for instance, have bird-names. (Crow, Nightengale, Crane, Kingfisher and Falcon). All of the characters from the celestial bureaucracy's Division of Endings have gone Egyptian. (Anubis, Ma'at, Osiris, Eset, Iah, Ammit, Nephthys and Imentet)

    5. Ohmigosh, yes! I absolutely love using naming themes! My favorites have always been colors, gemstones/minerals, birds, flowers and stars, and i'm glad to see others are fans of some of those themes too! :aheartbea

I actually have two different naming themes with my collection at the moment. While all of my larger dolls have non-themed "real" names, they are all canonically nicknamed after an animal/insect within their story.
Right now I have a Guppy, Wolf and Maggot. In the past I had a Egret, Gazelle, Aphid, Koi, Mink etc.

My smaller dolls are all various types of dragons, and they are all named after flowers.
Flowers are a particularly fun naming theme for me because I can use the color scheme I have in mind for a doll and try to match it as closely as I can to a flower to find their name.
For example, I have doll with a white/pale pink/pale green color scheme and he's named after the "Apple Blossom" Amaryllis which match those colors perfectly. A few are named after flowers that are a bit less literal with their color schemes but are in some other way relevant to the theming of their character. Like I have a fluffy snow dragon named Edelweiss and a tropical storm dragon named Anemone. I also have a Zinna and soon i'll be adding a Hemlock, Lavender and Primrose to the group!~

    6. these are all such cute ideas!!
the animal names I do a similar naming with ocs except their actual names are their animal names and they gave themselves nicknames bc their 'mom' is really bad at naming
and also idky I've never thought about my flower named ocs to have a similar scheme to their flowers...I'm bad at coming up w color schemes and that idea makes sm sense hahahaha. I also have an oc named Lavender I'd like to make into a doll some day but only her hair matches the flower she's named after lol!

    7. those are all such bad ass names and themes!!!!
I especially like the bird names!

    8. star naming twinsies!!!!
I've always been fond of the name Polaris, it's such a lovely name :D honestly all the stars you picked as names all sound really cool!
also I named my palamute in monster hunter Capella lol!

    9. Right??? coming up with names is one of my favorite things to do with characters!
All your dolls' names are so cute and work so well together :D

    10. Not consciously, but I’ve wound up with floral/botanical names for all of my planned MSDs. I have Eglantine the MSD Maggie, and someday hope to get a Volks SDM Noa, Sumire (Violet).

Aside from them, I usually just...play around with words and names that match the mood/theme of the character. If I end up with more botanical-inspired names, it’ll be a happy accident

    11. Some do have a theme, some don't. I have a group of merfolk that all have names 3 syllables ending with an ah sound. Luvina, Miyuna, Irveida. Most of my others don't though

together they sound very elegant * u *

honestly thats how my group of ocs named after animals happened...happy accident lol :whee:

    14. it's never too late to change names imo! I do it all the time to my ocs (oops)
but I also think that can be part of the charm of them, intricate stories wrapped in a simple pretty little ribbon o v o

    15. those are all such pretty names! :love

    16. Oh yes, the theme for my dolls is Tolkien names! I admit, I shell characters from Middle Earth in my dolls. So I have Elrond, Celebrian, Glorfindel, Thingol, Melkor, Manwe, and Varda. Also Sauron and Mairon. I have a few dolls who still need Middle Earth elf names but I also really like their mold names. For my non-elves, I have Kuja from FF9 and then a Volks Hewitt.

    17. Yep. I use themes.
All my Elf Soos have bird themed names, in foreign languages, three syllables, ending in-a.

My Soomlings all have names based on their animal types, again using foreign languages that are some how tied to that type of animal in some way.

And my Catsy's have lunar themed names.

    18. I'm all for name themes! And I'm honestly guilty of using cat breed names for many of my OCs. Others are flowers, colors, or something I made up by butchering an existing word. :XD:

    19. I also use floral theme naming for my dolls. Some dolls, like Frederica, have convoluted justifications, but they all tie back into flowers.

    20. I'm using mythology as a theme for my MSDs names. Some of my tinies also have mythology based names. My two Real Puki are both supposed to be trouble makers and are named after gods that reflect that. Kali is named for the Hindu goddess of destruction and Hermes is named for the Greek god of travelers and thieves. Kit's name is a shortened form of kitsune, a Japanese nine tailed fox shape shifter. Tyche is named after the Greek goddess of luck.
