Do you hide your dolls when a repair person comes to your house or apartment ?

Jan 23, 2013

    1. I don't hide my dolls when people come in, not that we have many people in our house. As far as if it were a repair person, ummm, no, they'd be there to do a job, not to pass judgement on me or what's in my house. They may be seeing the front door quicker than they expected if they said something out of line.

    2. I have dolls displayed in both my living room and and in my bedroom, so it'd be too much trouble to move them every time someone comes over (what can I say, my laziness overrides my fear of judgement). With repair people I only see once in a while, I honestly don't think about it - no one's made any comments.

I do have a friend who's afraid of dolls (she watched too many scary movies as a kid), so if she's coming over for more than a quick visit, I try to move them or cover them. She doesn't judge me for the dolls and is very chill, so I don't mind ocassionally moving the dolls for her. Unfortunately for her, I'm not the only friend she has who likes dolls, so...

    3. I once needed to put my doll aways cause the guy said it was creepy even tho it was rude i need a fix air conditioner so a few minuites wouldnt hurt so i kept him inside his box until the guy finished his job

    4. the last 2 workmen I've had round were really scared of my dolls! First guy took one look then headed for the front door to get out ASAP - and panicked when he discovered I'd locked it! :XD: 2nd guy also beat a hasty retreat and when I said with surprise that some people are afraid of dolls, he confessed all LOL - he had actually lied to his wife when they moved house, having hidden her one and only doll from her childhood, in the attic, he denied all knowledge of where it was - so they left it behind! Poor woman

So yes - don't bother with a guard dog or burglar alarm - get a doll! :thumbup Or preferably a room full of them :mwahaha

    5. I know right. Most of the adults that walk into my room quickly bolt out of it because the first thing you see when you walk into my room are four SD boys. I can't wait to get my two wide grinning boys bodies and see their reactions then.

Back on topic. I've already posted here before and I'm not sure what I posted so here's another response. I don't think I've ever had to hide my dolls from repairmen since there's no need for them to enter my room.

    6. I do shut the door to the sewing room and put away any dolls in there. They're odd and expensive-looking, and I prefer to keep some things private.

    7. mine occupy the living room wall unit.... not gonna happen (hiding)... thogh Dex is currently nude waitng for me to remember where I put his uniform so ya him and his man bit would be put away if the repair guy came back..

he was here yesterday and all I did was ask the guy to be mindful of my hobby since one corner he was looking at is where I set dolls up to take some pictures... and right now they are still there ;p

Frankly I was more paranoid about getting my internet back lol...

    8. most of them stay in their boxes, I have a girl I bought second hand that has no box so she stays out. I have one roommate that is terrified of them though but they stay in my room

I think I'd shift them a little more out of sight if someone was truely terrified

    9. If the workman has to be upstairs, where my dolls are, then yes, I'll quite literally 'hide' them.

A few weeks ago we had painters around the house and they had to go through my house,
up the stairs and through my bedroom/dollroom, in order to get to the outside of my balcony door.
Now, I'm quite ocd about people in my house and having people upstairs is something I prefer to prevent,
but since it was neccessary, I got a clean bedcover, a tablecloth and some towels and hid
all my 12 dolls underneath them.:XD:

It wasn't just not to scare him though, I didn't know how he would react to dolls but,
more importantly, I didn't want him to touch them.:sweat
Not only that, but he had to paint the outside of the door and I did not want my dolls bathing in sunlight.
There's a reason I taped the sides of the curtain to the door.;)

    10. Yes, but only because the guy works for my future Father-In-Law.

    11. Nope, I can't be bothered unless they are in the way. I generally only have a couple of dolls out on display at a time (alongside my tiny army of off topic hyper-realistic actions figures.) My bedroom has a lot going on- with my drawings/paintings, electronics, various knickknacks, and huge aquarium, so my dolls probably aren't the first things someone would single out upon entering, anyway.

    12. No I proudly show of my dolls, I don't care what anyone thinks of me because I have them. If they ask about them or what I'm making (as I am normally sewing/knitting when we have anyone in as it calms my anxiety) I try my best to explain what bjd is. I've never had anyone ask to hold one or pick one yet. I probably won't let them and if they did it without asking they would probably not live to tell the tale lol

    13. Okay, to clarify, because I had no idea of hiding them because of some kind of worry about social embarrassments because I don't think that way anymore, but rereading this it looks like people were thinking, 'Should I hide my weird dolls?" That is not remotely the thought process I go through.
I don't "hide" my dolls because I am embarrassed of them. I am a grown dang woman without any giveadarn left. There are swords on the walls for goodness' sake, if that doesn't tell you you're in an odd house, you wanna walk away right then.

I "Hide" my dolls because it is a very bad idea to let people coming into your house for work see where your valuables are kept, and how many you have, and where your doors and windows are, and whether you have a security system.

In my area, a lot of people's homes get broken into by thieves who knew how to get in and what to take because other people told them about the house. Theft rings here use information they get from friends in the service businesses so they can rob houses more efficiently. Sometimes the service folks are just paid for acquiring such info, sometimes they're directly involved in thefts. Call me paranoid, but it happens here.

    14. My dolls are in our master bedroom, but they aren't nearly as noticeable as the massive aquarium and the assortment of cat trees/cat toys/cat everything. Every single technician who has ever been in my home has commented on the aquarium or the cat trees, never the dolls. It helps that I've got a much smaller collection than many people here though (for now). Even if my collection was larger though, I wouldn't hide them. It's my home -- nothing about it needs to appease a stranger who's being paid to be there.

Rosslyn's point, however, is very good - even people who know very little about dolls can probably tell they're worth something significant. Much like putting a box for a shiny new tv or gaming console out with the garbage, sometimes having your valuables in plain sight makes you a target. I think that'd be a judgement call based on your area. I live in a very safe area... and I have two very large dogs, AND my husband works from home so is home 99% of the time. I'm not terribly concerned about someone breaking in. But since it's a noted issue in her area, her reasoning for moving her dolls out of sight is very solid.

    15. I had my doll on a shelf at one point but there were no contractors at the time. Actually, I had to remove the shelf and move all my stuff out of that room so the floors could be done. I never put the shelf back up and patched the holes. I placed my doll in a cupboard under the stair well (not as hidden as you'd think). Mostly did this to store him safely and protect him from the construction dust. That was sort of a break from the hobby seeing as my sewing machine was packed away along with all the needles and thread. In the end it was to protect him, and I all forgot about him while the floors were being done. Now it's sort of his house. Only comes out in the days I want him at my desk.

    16. Literally every wall in my living room, hallway and parts of my bedroom are all display cases with glass doors. It is just not possible to hide them. Not all of them are dolls, but I do have 14 large scale dolls spread out around. They are completely surrounded with other PVC figurines, garage kits, transformers, dicast cars, model fighter jets, tanks, and space crafts... so they are not as noticeable as a big group displayed together.

    17. Lol I had an experience years back when I was around 23 years of age where a workman had to pop into my bedroom, where I had a shelf packed with dolls, (non-BJD's)plushies etc. He looked at me and said "Shouldn't you be outside playing with your friends?" I could tell the way the way in which he said it and by the way he was looking at me that he thought I was a little school girl. To avoid any further embarassment I just looked at him and smiled and that was it, eager for him to be gone again. I can't be bothered to pack everything away everytime someone comes to the house, it'd take too long. I don't think I have to worry about being mistaken for a kid now though somehow, hee hee.

    18. I had to laugh at the topic title, and then click on it and read all your experiences. I am glad I am not the only one that has these experiences!

My situation requires me to live with my parents, and every time my mother has to give a "tour" of the house she shows them my bedroom (ugh), and their eyes always go straight to the naked dolls on my shelf. They get a strange/horrified look on their face and look at me just as strangely (if I am present). I say naked, because I love the dolls sculpts so much I feel it is a shame to cover them with clothes. Ya'll all know how...detailed *ahem*...some BJDs can be!

Though I will admit I am embarrassed when someone sees them because I know how judgmental they are being (even if they don't say it aloud). People usually ask me how old I am, then give one of those "are you retarded" looks when they find out. My family pretty much knows I have them, but "outside" people don't know about my hobby and I am kinda scared people will find out because of the whole judging thing (I have anxiety issues).

I give kudos to the people who are open about their hobby. I envy you!

    19. I have to agree with the people who think about theft first, if mine were displayed in the first place they'd certainly get tucked away. Luckily tho my dad is only repairman that comes through

    20. Workmen or rental inspection, I take extra care to create a production! I turn heads to face doors, pose some menacingly in the livingroom, leave headless bodies or in progress mod projects about, etc. As the size of my collecton is considerable, this can get pretty dramatic. If you want to poke about my home, you get what you get.
