Do you hide your dolls when a repair person comes to your house or apartment ?

Jan 23, 2013

    1. I wouldn't put anything away unless I was worried about damage.

I think repair/delivery people have probably already "seen it all".

    2. No, I never hide my dolls. I'm proud of them, I even try to find a way to get my friends into my room so they can see my dolls :) I love it when they stare at my dolls with wonder and I love to answer their questions. My dolls are always the center of attention every time someone comes in my room.

    3. Given that the majority of my crew are in plain sight (though behind glass-) in a trio of display cabinets on the main level of my house, hiding them isn't an option. I don't worry about it very much, though. The repair people I've had in, as well as most of our adult guests, just seem to consider them decorative objects, like any other collection. Once in awhile someone will comment on their outfits, or that one or another of them is pretty, but for the most part people just seem to note that they exist and then move on. I've never had anyone react poorly... 'No paniced running, squealing about "Chuckie".

Kids' reactions to the crew are always fun. They're usually not the least bit shy about going up to the cabinets and looking at (and asking about-) absolutely everything. The munchkins who visit us regularly all know they aren't allowed to open the cabinets without asking. (And yes, when they ask I usually do open the doors and let them look at whoever they want to. If they're old enough to be careful, I'll even take the doll out and let them play with it... The rule is that they have to ask first, though. 'No unsanctioned doll-grabbing. It's a safe-guard against messy-fingers and not-quite-old-enough-for-one-that-heavys that's served us really well. )

    4. I'm more worried about where the dirty laundry is... but I live in a secure building and I know all the managers and maintence guys, so I don't care if they see them. They already know we're little weird. There are puppets around in here too, and occasionally historical period costumes hanging about.
Also, in this part of town, if someone stole anything it wouldn't be the dolls, I doubt they would know what they were--- they would take the tv or the game system.
Other than that, I'd only pack them away if work had to be done that might get them dirty, paint splattered, or hit by something.

    5. Nope... no need to hide from anyone, this is personal interest... and I think most people used to it already... or at least they can understand that is a hobby =P

    6. I hid mine last summer when I had some new furniture for my home office delivered. It was a real hassle hiding 20+ dolls, but not only did I not want anyone to see them, but I was worried they might drop pieces of furniture on them. I'm the type of person who wants to hide everything remotely personal when people I don't know are around, though. My work office doesn't have a single picture, plant, or any other type of decoration.

In the past, the cable guy saw my dolls because he had to go into a room that I didn't think he'd need access to. He was fascinated by them, and we ended up chatting for about 2 hours, so it ended up not being embarrassing.

    7. I don't see much point to hiding dolls (or any other collectable outside of small obviously valuable ones) from service people - in that kind of job they've probably seen everything!

Although we have been thinking about having one of our washrooms redone, and since one of my doll shelves is the opposite side of one of that room's walls I'd probably take them down. But that's for security - I wouldn't want them to fall off the shelf if the wall vibrates - which isn't quite the same thing.

    8. Not really, my dolls are sitting upstairs in my craft room. So only when they are dowstairs it's possible that strangers can see them. But even then I don't mind that they are hanging around.

    9. I keep my dolls in glass cabinets in the living room--so I wouldn't put mine away when strangers or guests come over. I do try to keep them all clothed, however--just because I have a bunch of kids running around through the house all day, and I'm not always ready to answer those questions. ;)

    10. Nope, I've never hidden my dolls! :)
Dolls are kept in а cabinet (away from sunlight) so they are not usually in plain sight. I'll admit, I've sometimes placed a doll in the middle of the living room just to freak people out and scare the crap out of them...it's funny, looking at a burly repairman throw worried glances at an MSD (dressed in pink, mind you!) from time to time!

    11. Recalling the incident with my Wii sensor bar and a cable guy (and after realizing I mis-read this thread's title)...I will likely be just moving my dolls to their shelf AWAY from everyone else and my MSD will be cuddled on my lap or on my bed next to me. No touchy-touchy of strangers.

    12. Well... i have roommates in the same house... currently my dolls sit beside me in my room however they're in direct sight from the doorway. they haven't said anything yet, but currently not sure how to respond to them yet. However i think they understand i have different tastes and views as in i'm sleeping in a futon, have a kotatsu, have a giant teddy bear in the corner, and some pvc figures lying around.

    13. LOL Funny this topic popped up. I had the internet guy in my room, as that is where we installed everything. xD

Luckily my SD wasn't home yet, but I do know the feeling. I have a lot of special fx things laying about. When he came over he got to see my flesh wounds, and my necronomicon flesh book. xD That particular day my room looked like a theatrical costume shop. All my special efftects things were out and roaming about. He went to plug in the router and he looks at the wounds laid out in front of it.

"Oh, don't mind my body parts." rofl!

I do try to clean and make things decent...but I think that is just a habit. Every time we are expecting people to come over, we clean up.

I don't mind my things being seen, but I will put things away if children are about. I figure it's my room and our house, it's not up to other people to judge what we do in our houses and personal spaces/environments. Quite frankly I don't care very much.

Though, when people come over...they are always wanting to see my things. xD Then I have to go and drag everything out. :P

    14. This thread made me laugh!
Some of my dolls are stored / hidden (especially due to the light and because of my curious cat!).
I think I'll put them away if I feared damage, but in the case of a repairman or deliveryman, I do not change anything!

      (I use google translator)

    15. Most of my dolls live in my bedroom, so all I have to do is close the door if I don't want them seen. Most people who do come over don't mind them, though. And the repairmen that do come through have to contend with Disney Plush Mountain on the couch, which I'd imagine would be a little weirder than my dolls.

ETA: I am getting new bedroom furniture this week - and I am putting the dolls away, if only because I have to take EVERYTHING out of that room for the new furniture to fit. Once I figure out how to wiggle their shelf back in there somehow they're going right back to staring at the door. ;)

    16. I usually keep my dolls in my bedroom (Where shades are pulled and it's dark) and if a service man came, he would be in my living room. If I had a doll out there, which I sometimes do on a bookshelf, I don't think I would care. It hasn't happened yet as I'm new to the hobby. I think a Tiny doll or an MSD would be pretty cute sitting there and I wouldn't mind answering questions about. An SD wouldn't even fit on my bookshelf, though I imagine would be kind of striking. LOL!

(The reason they sit on my bookshelf is because the cats would get them otherwise ;) )

    17. Nah. My dolls sit safely on top of a giant cabinet, so they can't be damaged easily and personally I don't really care what people might think of what I have standing around in my home. It is my home after all :).

Besides, I have never seen a repairman looking funny at my crew. (they are too busy being distracted by my cat... attention seeking fussball that he is)

    18. I have weekly cleaners come to my house, and they absolutely love my dolls!
They get very excited when they see my girls have new stuff! :)

    19. Nah... we have lived in the same apartment for nine years and Jack (our main repair guy) is cool. I'll relocate things if need be for a repair, but he is cool with all of our various collections and love our two cats to boot. :)

    20. Maybe I''m being a little paranoid, but now after reading all this about strange people coming into my house for repairs, etc. I think I'm going to be worried enough about theft or damage to maybe include my dolls in my homeowners insurance, since I've already got so much invested. They are that valuable and while you could never replace a doll friend, at least you could be compensated if something awful happened.
