Do you hide your dolls when a repair person comes to your house or apartment ?

Jan 23, 2013

    1. Nope! because I have to watch them anyway so I'm sure that they can't stole them.
Actually I have a lot of figures in my room so it will be really hard to hide all of them.

    2. Not really... I have about 200 Anime/manga figures, and my 4 (soon 9) bjd.. And I live in a very small apartment, so I don't have anywhere to hide them, even if I wanted too.. I have gotten a few strange looks, but mostly the repair persons here don't mind them. They just do their work and leaves xD

    3. I would put them out of sight not because of embarrassment but because of the risk of theft!

    4. Moving people, heck yes. I'd bundle them away for their own good, same as closing and locking my violin case. If just casual friends, they just gotta deal with it.

    5. I got a funny reaction from a Russian friend that works with my husband. I wanted to give his little girl a doll and wanted to find out her hair color. First off, his English vocabulary is more scientific. So when I asked him if his daughter would like a doll, he did not understand the word. So I said: "A doll, like Barbie." "I collect dolls." He said incredulously: "You collect dolls???", as if he suddenly preceived me as mentally deficient.
The hazards of dressing like your dolls. I was in full Greensleeves Tudor costume ready to go to a historical Demo. The door bell rang. I had little choice, but to answer. The two work men kept stony faces, but were skeptical when I explained that no, I did not order an ice-maker and that there was another Pecan WOOD drive with the same number. They turned away and then one of them turned back and said: "Say, Lady, are you sure you didn't order an ice-maker." I assured him not. I guess he figured anyone wandering around the house in a costume had to be well, mentally disoriented?
Historically, dolls were prestige items, never intended for use by children. The best Victorian houses had them on display in chairs, etc. Presentation boxes with wardrobes of stylish cloths, survived because they were Not played with.
France comissioned a special doll from SFBJ for the Princesses Elizabeth and Margaret. Clothing was created by the finest dress designers of the day. Minature automobiles were created by French Manufacturers, as well as baby beds, baby carriage/pram etc. The dolls were never played with but put on display to raise funds for charity in England and Canada. And susequently helped to advertize the industries of France. Dolls have never been just for kids. So don't worry about who sees your dolls, or who sees you checking out the dolls in the grocery aisle. Dolls are just interactive works of art.

    6. As I'm still looking to set up a more permanent residence for my dolls in my bedroom (a mighty challenge with the lack of free space) they've been sitting up on the bookshelf in my family's living room. Anytime maintenance, or other workers, have come by I've never bothered to move them. I don't think they're all that noticeable at first glance either....just Paris really since he's the biggest.

I agree with basically everyone else. The only time I'd move them would be if there was danger of them being damaged.

    7. Yes, especially if there are children coming over. I have a curtain rigged on their shelf so all I need to do is pull it closed to put them away :)

    8. No I never hide my dolls, I'm proud of them and besides I only have one and he resides in my bedroom so it's not really a problem for me. I could see however why people would want to hide there dolls and other things when people are at the house.

    9. I box them up out of protection not because I would be embarrassed. I don't want them damaged. I wouldn't worry about theft either, I don't let people walk around in my room without me being there. I'm very firm about that.

    10. It would take me a rather large amount of time to move all my dolls from various rooms but I wouldn't even try to. It's my house why should I hide who I am? I would move dolls if they were in the way of work being done but that's about it. My hubby is quite proud of my weirdness anyway and points them out to people all the time, even when they don't notice. Hey have a look at my wife's doll collection, and hat block collection and all her sewing machines .... and on and on.

    11. I would hide them, especially when kids come to my house and like to touch my dolls (at the moment I only have Pullips and Dals and ordering LY). I am not embarrassed because of that. I just don't like other people with dirty hand touch my dolls and not be careful with it.

    12. I don't hide my dolls away. My bedroom is on the second floor of my house and usually only people I want going into that room actually go in (Except the cable guy but I didn't have dolls then). I had a friend I showed my first doll to and she said she was creepy and when I said you can take the back of the head off she freaked and said she'd throw up if I took it off. I did and she didn't do it so one up for me hehe. Another friend (Right after I got my 5th and 6th doll in from an event in December) said she loved my first doll and especially loved her face (I did the faceup so it made me happy). She was very interested in them. I trust her with holding them but she was kinda scared to hold one of my smallest dolls (My first ever YOSD) when she heard the price range on the dolls and because of how pretty they were. Pretty boy Yuuri likes to be held though so why not? lol

    13. I don't hide them either! So far repairmen wise we've been really lucky & they have been quite professional, not even looking like they were going to touch anything. Hubby & I did have an internet man once who was in awe of the DR Who collection (hubby keeps locked glass jewelry cases for some of it) and asked if we were a museum. Sadly, he ignored my little friends completely. I think it hurt some feelings.

    14. Yes, definitely. I either put them away or throw a sheet over them. It's not at all because I'm embarrassed by them but it's because they're expensive and they're intriguing. If someone is in my place fixing a pipe or painting something, I wouldn't want them to be tempted to touch a doll with greasy or paint-y fingers! BJDs are magnetic sometimes because they're so interesting looking and I really wouldn't want to risk them being ruined by grabby hands! I also wouldn't want someone to think "Wow, my (kid, significant other, relative, drug dealer, pastor) would love that! I'm sure they won't notice it missing, it's gotta be, what, $35 tops?" and try to run off with it. Out of sight, out of mind. I'd just rather be safe than sorry.

    15. ^^ I actually had a repair person come two week ago.. actually a whole team Oo. They renewed the tv cables in all of the apartements. And no, I didn't hide my dolls, there are actually so many of them now, that I can't put them all away and I was around anyways, so nobody could steal them either. Being embarrassed? Maybe a little, but then, it is a hobby, other people collect shoes or one friend collects fantasy armours (life size), so what of it? Besides I might not ever see this particular team again XD. And to the stealing part, most people around here have never seen such dolls and wouldn't know how much they are worth or being able to discern my DZs from my Dollshes.

    16. I don't worry about the repairmen that come to my house since this company has always been professional. Only one guy they've sent has ever batted an eyelash about my dolls. I suppose it helps that most of them are Barbie-sized. Besides, my dad stays with the repair-guys whenever they're in the house anyway. Since I got my first on-topic doll last year, no maintenance/repairperson has ever made a move for him, and my nieces are both old enough to handle dolls carefully, although one is more rambunctious than I'd like someone handling my dolls to be, and they think he's creepy anyway. They were never big on dolls to begin with. I will, within the next few months to a year, have to start taking precautions for my dolls when my friend's new babies come over, but they live on a bookcase right now so they're safe for the time being.

    17. I don't really care too much. I'll gladly show my boys off if anyone asks. Their box (as I don't have a proper place for them yet. ;-; But I intend to eventually) sits right beside my bed so I can get to them easily and make sure they're not messed with too much. My friends, most of them think my dolls are so creepy, but some have actually come to love them and even want one of their own now~ 8D So I really don't care much if strangers (repairmen or whatever) see my babes. <3 Spread the love and whatnot~~

    18. Yes, but mostly because I'm worried that they'll break Cain by accident.

    19. Not really... it's too much of a hassle to move all of them around all the time >< if they need to be in my room for whatever reason I just make sure the dolls remain unharmed.

    20. I've done this a couple of times! Haha! They've probably seen some stranger things though I'm sure... I just get a bit embarrassed.
