Do you hide your dolls when a repair person comes to your house or apartment ?

Jan 23, 2013

    1. A few days ago we had a visit from the cable guy. He called to say that he could come earlier than was scheduled if we were at home. My boyfriend agreed..but I happened to be in the middle of hot sueding my newest girl and I wasn't about to stop. When he arrived I was sitting on the living floor with all her pieces spread out on a towel. I was in the middle of restringing her. He just sort of looked at what I was doing and went about his job.

    2. I usually keep them in my bedroom so no one can touch them. But I don't mind people seeing them if they happen to be invited into my room! ~

    3. nope. the AT&T man came and I was talking with him. he turned around and saw my desk... with like 23 little apple dolls standing there staring at him and my various toys and BJDs. His mouth dropped and he turned around and just had a really puzzled look on his face. He worked rather quickly and left. I'm not sure what scared him more, the faceless LADs or the semi nude and headless BJDs that were being worked on. . .

It didn't bother me any. I didn't have to talk to him anymore. I wanted him to do his job and get out of my house. The dolls did the work for me.

    4. Yup! Because I just show my doll only for people who want to see my dolls and I already know them ^^

    5. yes, both with known and unknown people (unless with my mom and my brother), when I hear the doorbell I run to hide them in my room! luckily they're in my room most of the time so this doesn't happen often :P

    6. That's a great question. I'm an older male so here is my take on it.

Among my 'standard' BJD's I have four Pullips'. The Pullips' used to be out in the open in the entry way as a person would enter my house. Initially, yes, I would cover them up if a repair person came over. Though I am not embarrassed to tell people I own dolls, I can understand that it might make some people uncomfortable so I hid them.

However, after a while I realized that if someone was that uncomfortable than they don't have to do work for me and I'll go to someone else or figure out how to do the work myself.

Now all of my dolls are in my bedroom because I like seeing them when I get home or wake up in the morning. I would only hide them if someone had to enter my bedroom and I was currently doing an unclothed model shoot with the more mature dolls I have (never the Pullips', they are too cute for that). Or I thought that they might want to steal one.

When I tell people I have dolls their first impression is that I have baby-dolls or barbie dolls (although there are a number of men who collect those). But when I show them my dolls in person or in photos than they have a whole different perspective. I know my mom was relieved

The way I dress the Pullips' they look more sophisticated-cute and opposed to cute-cute, if that make sense.

    7. I packed all but 2 my dolls away for like 9 months, when we were supposed to have the walls pulled open for a repipe, but since the managers never had the repipe done, I finally lost my temper and put everyone out again. Our current handyman thinks they are amazing, that they were puppets at first. You find out strange things about people over dolls. His father used to give him puppets when he was a kid in Mexico. I say leave 'em out and let the psychology fall where it may. But not if someone is ripping out walls and re-doing a ceiling. O_o

My nephew learned when he was 10 that the dolls aren't worth his life. Now he has two of his own 1/3 boys.

    8. No, but I did hide the, from a guy I was seeing once. Lol. Needless o say it didn't last very long. Haha.

    9. Anytime maintenance has come by they were in boxes. Not on purpose. Just happened to be that way at the moment.

    10. Nope, my dolls stay out. It's my house, and like others have said, you don't have to accept me, just do the job you're hired for and leave.

I'm just getting to the point where I actually TELL people I collect dolls. Almost 2 years into the hobby and there are six resin people running about my house, backpack, purse....

    11. I was getting a new mattress delivered and one of them commented that my girls talon feet were hitting his arm so the most I did was move her feet ^^; (Granted my house does not look like an adult lives in it, its that fine line of nice things and toys).

    12. Honestly, yes. I've been in the hobby for a little over a year now and still have a lot of insecurities about people seeing my dolls (especially my DC girl, who I think is lovely but could easily look strange so the muggles), but it has helped that one of my best friends has seen them and is interested in getting one of her own someday. ^^

    13. Since I still live in my parents house that I grew up in (since I'm a student in my final year), if a repairperson comes they would be rarely exposed to my dolls - which stay in my room. However, on the occasions that someone has been there, my dolls stay out as they are because it's my room and no one's business. Their personal opinion is nothing to do with the job they've been paid to do.

    14. No. I'd be more worried if I had dirty dishes or forgot to pick up sock and clothing. >_< I'd only move my dolls if they were where the person would be working or if the work would cause them to be dirty.

    15. I hide some of mine when my parents are coming round - they don't know I have so many ;-)

    16. Hahaha, I collect so much stuff there's no way I could hide it all. I mean, even if I hid whatever dolls I might have, the poor guy would still have a small army of My Little Ponies staring at him or something. XD But sometimes I put expensive things on a higher shelf where they can't be easily grabbed and messed with by people who might not realize how fragile they are. But that applies to my nephews as much as the cable guy.

    17. Once I moved the dolls to our bedroom, because they were in the way of the repairman, but otherwise I don't hide them. And besides, I've got four glass cabinets filled with model horses, so the poor repairman will be shocked anyway.

    18. My dolls are usually under a protective blanket anyway.

    19. I keep all of my BJDs in my bedroom where he has never gone (as far as I know!). I have some other dolls in my computer room and living room, but those aren't areas I'm worried about him going anyway. It's the upstairs bathroom and kitchen areas that are the danger zones...

My boyfriend was working on a model boat that I bought him for $300 and it was sitting in the kitchen on a tray. The repair man came in and was doing something by the back door. I felt a prickle on the back of my neck and rushed in when I realized he would be working too close to it. Sure enough, he was already just about knocking the damned thing over when I came in. I was able to move it to safety but that was pretty scary. My boyfriend had been working on it for about two months at that point.

We have a leak in the upstairs bathroom and the last time he was here, he coated the whole room in white powder...over my hair brushes and everything:evil: He's a nice guy, just very simple, so I try to be friendly whenever he needs to fix something. However, I cannot - and will not - be responsible for the rage that would be unleashed if he damages something of mine, especially if it's one of my dolls or artbooks.

    20. hahaha.. I don't hide them from my relatives but some guests and little kids.
The kids always think that bjds are Barbies and you know, just "play" with them, which always makes me mad:doh
