Do you hide your dolls when a repair person comes to your house or apartment ?

Jan 23, 2013

    1. I do if I know I'm not going to be around although unless it's a huge emergency, I don't allow any maintenance person into my apartment without being there myself. I live in a studio so there isn't many places where I can hide things but I have a walk in closet that I have added a lock to because I have been robbed before. That time, none of my dolls (or any of my purses or kimono) were touched and only my boyfriend's things were stolen so we suspected one of my ex boyfriends. And just the other day I had Souji sitting on my kotatsu even though the apartment above mine started leaking water so bad that my place was flooded and the maintenance guy walked around him very carefully and avoiding the table so he wouldn't knock him over. I was a little worried because the maintenance people could technically get in any time so I usually don't want them to see anything of value laying around but just this time, I didn't have time to find a place to put Souji where water might not leak because I had to tend to my kimono and tatami mats to prevent water damage.

    2. Nope, never. I recently had a house inspection, and while nothing was said about my dolls, the real estate guy lol'd at the open box of toys for my cats.

    3. lol.. well I have my two tines out and baskets of stuffed animals and a giant stuffed giraffe and a taxidermic wolf all visible as soon as you walk into my apartment. Not to mention the dresser covered in the artist bears that I made.

I figure if someone thinks I'm weird and is turned off by it, they wouldn't have made it into my apartment in the first place - and if they don't like me after that, then it's not much of a loss. If it's just a repair person that who cares, lol.

    4. I've never even considered hiding them... I have 30 of them, so hiding them isn't exactly easy. I would move them if the repair person o whatever needed to work behind them, but other than that? It's really just too much of a hassle. I did pack most of them up to show the house when I moved a few years ago. I left one out as decoration, and left a post it note saying "Please do not touch" on the wall next to her. Everything was fine when I got back to her each time, so I assume the post it worked.

I don't really care about the looks my dolls get, either. I'm quite proud of my collection, and when someone enters my room, they are entering my personal space, so why would I move them to make someone else comfortable? That's just silly. If they don't like my dolls or feel uncomfortable, they can leave.

    5. I normally have my dolls concealed during the day, to protect them from sunlight... so conveniently they aren't really visible anyway.

But yeah I would probably hide them anyway. It's not that I'm ashamed of my hobbies or anything, I just like to avoid unnecessary heckling or weird questions... because that's just about always what it is.

    6. Ha! I would never be able to hide all the crud I have lying around much less my dolls. My collection is not so big though so it hasn't gotten to that weird stage where they look at you yet. Honestly my husbands transformers outnumber my dollies so they would probably think we like those best.

I try to keep them decent though - if they are naked they stay in the box until I can clothe them. Since they are anatomically correct I would hate for people to get some weird idea about what they were for.

    7. When ever a repair person comes, I don't hide my dolls. I mean, they are getting paid and it's not like they are in the way. But at first I was embarrassed, but I don't care now.

    8. I hid my doll from the pest exterminator the other day. I also hide it from the staff entering my office where the doll is just sitting. I just don't want to have to answer questions from them or get weird looks and thoughts.

    9. I keep my dolls in boxes unless I am actively doing something with them so for the most part they're away anyway. If I know someone's coming I won't take them out. I don't know if I am embarrassed so much as worried about having valuable things out. The last time we had a work crew in, putting in a new tub, one of the guys went into our bedroom and my boyfriend caught the guy stealing his watch off of my sewing table. It was especially fun because I didn't even know they'd be there. My property manager had decided that was the best way to fix a rusty drain without telling me. That sort of thing worries me now so, yeh, dolls get put away for sure.

    10. I wouldn't hide dolls. I could care less what a repairman thinks about dolls! BUT... I might put them away so they won't be damaged or stolen if people I don't know are walking around!

    11. No. whats in my house is my business. If they don't like my dolls they can leave. I had one guy say my doll had a huge chest. Also that she was creepy. She's a Dollfie dream Dynamite. He was the repair guy at our old apartments.

    12. Impossible....I have too many. I wouldn't anyway.

    13. umm, I keep my dolls wrapped up in blankies, but I would think that it will be nice to display the dolls. I went to friend's house with two large boxers. I would think it would not be safe to have the dolls around with large dogs, but I also think it would be alright if dogs are well behave.

    14. Nope. When a repair man came over to my house, I set up my doll on my bed, with the blanket around him.
..I hope he was creeped out. :)

    15. I've hid my dolls when family or my mum's friends/relatives come, simply because I know they will not understand the hobby, they will not understand why I have a doll at my age, they will just laugh and say he is creepy or I'm weird, and then they'll probably try and touch him and I don't want them to mess up his wig or clothes so I keep him out of harm's way. I am protective like that! I know I shouldn't let that bother me and it doesn't bother me at all, I'm just more concerned if they mess his clothes up.

    16. No I don't hide my dolls for anyone. I'm not ashamed by my hobby so why would I hide them? :)

    17. Nope. If a repairman thinks I'm a bit unstable maybe they'll just do their job and not try to share their political or religious opinions with me. Dolls are not high on the list of things to tell your burglar buddy about, either. Main things a thief wants from your home are cash, firearms, medications, jewelry, electronics and laptops.

    18. My partner used to be in the heating and cooling industry, and believe me, there is very little that would shock him. He's seen it all.
I've heard some very interesting stories.
For those of you who have dealt with dirty or messy repair people, that surprises me, because the companies my partner worked for, required that they carry an extra uniform, just in case. They also were required to wear shoe covers.

    19. I have mine kind of hidden due to the fact I have not shown my family...yet. But I do wish I have the room to have them open instead of them hiding. If a repairman comes then so be it. But I get a bit paranoid though if they do touch since they don't know any better. When I'm not home I usually hide them away.

    20. My doll is in my bedroom and not in view from the door (so as to be out of the sunlight). I don't really worry about people seeing him accidentally because my room is on the second floor, as mentioned before he's out of view unless you're in the room, and because my room is a complete MESS. So I close my door if anyone is coming over. Even friends and family! But if I lived alone and had him displayed somewhere else I would move him. Mostly because of his value. If something happened to him and he broke or worse someone liked the look of him and took him. :o I don't know what I'd do!
