Do you only buy dolls that would fit into your doll-family?

Jun 10, 2010

    1. I'm about to buy my very first doll and I've been wondering the same thing myself.
From the start I had in mind a boy between 60-65cm but now I'm actually planning on getting an AngelHeim Ryan and he's 71cm! He's way too tall and I probably will get smaller dolls in the future and I'm afraid I'll then notice that Ryan is a giant and I'll regret getting him in the first place...
But then I think, if you really like a doll but he's a bit different from the ones you already own, what's exactly the problem? You still like that doll right?! Then go for it! It probably won't be that bad :)

    2. Well I only have two dolls and they look like they could be related but I've got a fondness for a lot of different types of dolls. So I guess no. It doesn't matter to me if they fit in or not.

    3. I am pretty new to the bjd world but have a ton of blythes. I do recognize I have a certain look I go for. and with bjds i knew I wanted to build a ginger army so all my girls will have redhair and probably freckles!

    4. Granted, when I think on it, I do have a set of dolls that might not exactly match or be proportionate to the bigger dolls, but at the same time they all somehow work well together. I'm more likely to go with dolls that'll work well with all my current ones, the only exception I'll make is one that just grabs my attention enough to work against the look I usually go for, which is very rare. Currently I have a sort of storyline/universe with my sets of dolls and I guess I'd worry if I stray too far from that, that I'll wind up wanting to create a whole new set of dolls that have to go with each other X.x;;;

    5. I dont as an over all group, but as like smaller groups and couples i take it somewhat into consideration.

    6. I think I take story and 'fit' into consideration more then anything else. There are a lot of dolls I like, a lot of dolls that I would love to own, but I can't just spend money on them if they don't 'fit' a character or what I have planned. When I first got into the hobby I just wanted one and didn't really consider anything or put any thought into it. Hence how I ended up with my first two dolls and why they are sold now. The girl that I'm getting now is one that I've dreamed of forever but upon seeing her I also thought of a character, and from there a story. Now I'm getting a boy to go along with her, or well, I probably won't get him until next year, and his character is perfect with her and the over all story. I'm also getting a tiny girl who should hopefully be paid of next month, but the same story. But the thing is they all 'fit' together in the story, in the family. I can't really see myself getting dolls that don't fit, not only because I don't have the money [yay for college >.>] but because I feel like they would be out of place.

    7. Yes and no.
I would not pair a MSD and a SD. It looks wrong and just no. The dolls have to be in the same range if they're the same age.
But I mix realistic and anime style as I please. Some characters need to look more cute and unrealistic, while others need to be very realistic. It works in my mind, so I don't care if anyone disagrees.

    8. Oh no! Never! Aha! Iny story that the characters are from they are all rejects, they are circus folk who have been rejected by the world that have joined together. They are meant to look mis-matching and weird! ^-^ I like it that way too, it shows that there is a variety and they each one is unique in their own way :p

    9. I buy the dolls that really spark interest or inspiration. They don't all have to have corresponding characters in the same story. I have no doubt that they'll somehow grow to become part of the family.

    10. I usually try to get dolls that fit into my doll family, but if I find one I absolutely love that doesn't fit in, I'll just find a way to MAKE it fit into my dolly family.

    11. Yes and no I guess. I have two different doll "families" so whenever I find a doll I like I try to fit them in with one of those two groups.....if I really like them and they don't fit......I probably would just create a new group for them.

    12. So this is my question, do you only by dolls that compliment your doll-family?
Yes and no. I don't normally think about it, but whichever dolls I pick usually compliment each other anyhow :) So it's not on purpose, but my preference in style meshes like that.

If you do, what do you think makes you do this? Why does it matter?
      Look above :)

    13. I like for all my dolls to look like they "belong" together, or like they could be from the same universe or something. All my dolls are SD and they all have a non-anime but also non-realistic look to their faces. Sometimes I see a doll I love but I wouldn't buy it because it either looks too realistic or looks too "anime eye" style to fit in with the rest of my dolls. I also don't buy dolls of other sizes for this reason, it would irk me that the scale is off.

Do you do anything similar? Maybe they're all the same size or all wear pastels? Or are you okay with having different size dolls hanging out next to each other on your bookshelf?

    14. I don't mind if my dolls look like they belong together anymore, when I first stared the hobby I did worry about it but I gave up on that when I got my Limhwa Mano.
I own dolls that fall on all sides of the spectrum, as far as realism goes (from anime-based to some that have been confused for real-people). I have painted and modified
a lot of the head sculpts I own, so in a way all of my dolls look like they belong to the same person (I think), even if they don't all necessarily look like they could be from
the same universe, or world. I mostly own floating heads, so my larger head-sculpts do wear the same clothes (same body). Also, I am biased; all of my dolls wear black all the time!
I don't display my large resin dolls, but in general I don't mind displaying dolls of different sizes (and even different scale/aesthetics) together. I don't try to have my dolls looking similar
on purpose, it's mostly that I do prefer black clothes (I myself only wear black), and hate (suck at) sewing. (:

    15. I noticed that all three of my dolls have a similar look to them but I didn't really do that on purpose. It hit me after I got my third doll that I like a certain type of facial mold. I have a DOD Ducan, a Doll-zone Hid, and a Doll-zone Feillian. They all seem to look like they were made to be together. Also even thought they are all second hand and vary in age all of their resins are the same shade even though their different companies and ages. I guess I just know what I like as far as looks go.

    16. Wow Enzyme! Your doll collection sounds so awesome! :D

    17. Most of my dolls have red hair. They all wear casual style clothing, and even though they look different in the face and body, I realized I've got a certain cohesive look that I'm going for.
In fact, they REALLy look like they go together right now, because while they are all waiting for me to finish making their clothes, I temporarily put them all in tee shirts made from the same gray fabric (an old tee shirt of mine that I cut up).

    18. I wish I could say no, because generally I enjoy having a variety, different personalities and thus styles!
But.......................... I notice again and again that when I have a current fab and I draw characters, they all get the same hair styles, colors, looks.................... so yeah, I am afraid it'll be similar with my dolls haha.
I did contemplate making a "2nd set" of characters with the same dolls though, a fantasy one, so I could make/collect clothing for both styles and when I am feeling bored with the "normal human, casual style" I could revamp them all into fantasy characters, and then switch back again later.

    19. Ive actually been thinking of doing the same thing! Of collecting some more "offbeat" fantasy dolls but keeping them separate from my human dolls when on display.

    20. Yeah...my guys are int he same family so they have to fit a particular style. So I tend to buy from the same family or at least they have the same style.
