Do you only buy dolls that would fit into your doll-family?

Jun 10, 2010

    1. Yes. I have two families. I need to find surnames for both families, because so far they are just the red haired family and the blonde family. Each family consists of sets of siblings. The eldest girl of the blonde family is romantically involved with the edest boy of the redhaired family.

I also have one doll who is not in a family, but I have a very intricate back story for her and would like to have dolls representing other members of her family some day.

    2. I buy dolls that I like.

    3. I suppose but not on purpose I just buy dolls that I like a lot and none of them is super realistic. My dolls are all supernatural being so any skin tone and trait would fit as well.

    4. Thank you, Skinnyneko! I would like to think my small collection is awesome,
but then it would be kind of hard not to, being the owner. :sweat
At the very least I feel all my dolls fit perfectly within my aesthetic preferences.
Good luck on your search of your perfect collection! (:

    5. Most of them all have a similar style since a majority of my BJDs are from the same company, but I bought them because they inspired me, not because I was looking for them to match. None of them are from the same storyline, so I don't need them to look like they belong in the same universe.

    6. This is one of the defining characteristics of my doll-collecting habits. I take 'doll matching' to an extreme, where I decided from the start that my main collection would be comprised of only one company. I wanted the aesthetic style to be COMPLETELY consistent in my 'doll family', and no matter what, each company is going to have small stylistic variations because each artist is unique. I did want to have different body types and sizes as well though, for variety, so I decided that each doll would have a different body option; BlueFairy has three body types for MSD girls and boys, and two height choices for their YoSD-ranged dolls.

However, there are a couple exceptions. The exception that I actually own right now is 'the oddboll', a cheap little Chinese tiny that just doesn't fit into the 'group'. Because she's cheaper, smaller, lighter, she often becomes my travel girl or the doll I take out, and she's kind of by her lonesome when on display. That's a little sad though, so she hangs out with the stuffed toys I have instead. The other exception that is on my wishlist is a completely different style, maturity and proportion to my collection. However, due to the story I created for my dolls, the difference in appearance would be appropriate.

The last possible future exception is the Daydream company; the sculptor is actually originally from BlueFairy, which one can tell from comparing the aesthetics. I love that this company offers a shorter MSD girl size and a taller 'prince' type MSD boy, which would add even more variety to my collection of body types. I think they're close enough to be added to my group, but even then they would still end up being a 'separate pair' from the family that the BlueFairy group essentially is. But, Daydream currently only fulfills the 'matching aesthetic/proportions/size' and the 'different, desirable body types' requirements. Once they get heads that I'd actually want and a tan skin option, I'll consider it more seriously.

Otherwise, I don't typically even put other companies into consideration.

    7. So this is my question, do you only by dolls that compliment your doll-family?
Yes. I do tend to stick to dolls that "blend in" with the existing collection. What I already have is largely of the "stylized" variety, so while I do love to look at both realistic and anime-style sculpts, I don't (currently) have any plans to add anything that falls into those styles.

If you do, what do you think makes you do this? Why does it matter?
My dolls are predominantly shells for existing characters; since they'll need to interact with each other, they'll need to be visually appealing against one another as well. Since it's easier to be a bit "flexible" on looks with the stylized sculpts, these are what I've leaned toward each time I add a new narrative group.

    8. I buy dolls that I like. They are from several different companies in variety of styles.
The only downfall for me is that so far no one can really share clothes.

    9. I TOTALLY do this, I feel like if you don't, it'd be like drawing a comic and drawing all the characters in a different style.
I really like the more realistic bjds rather than the more 'anime' or 'cartoon' look, so when I buy dolls I limit my search to the more realistic end of the spectrum.
But I feel like if I were to have two different sizes (ex: MSD and SD) it might not feel so foreign to mix cartoon-y MSDs and realistic SDs (if each size is in a different story line of characters, that is)

    10. Well I look for dolls that are in scale with each other. I really wanted the DC Zora, but I found out that she is indeed too small to stand realistically next to my MSD DZ (she couldn't really be a kid either as she has a mature body). So I try and find dolls that relate to each other size wise

    11. It's a big thing for me, because I make all of my dolls to fit my existing original characters, and they're all related in some way to each other. Now that i've decided to buy SDs, I can't bring myself to buy MSDs because they'd be out of scale. I also lean towards realistic or semi realistic sculpts - I don't mind them being stylised, but nothing too anime/cartoonish, because that wouldn't fit either!

There IS at least one Yo-SD I want, but she'll fit in scale because she's a child!

    12. I like to have individuals, I seem to have a collection of characters that are introverted and live on the margins of society so they wouldn't really interact with one another. I like this as it allows me to move between sculpts and characters at my own free will.

    13. So this is my question, do you only by dolls that compliment your doll-family?
Yeah. I think that is why I used to collect only Minifee. Any other doll looked decidedly ''other'' next to them and ended up moving on so I just stuck to Minifee for a while. Until I got my first french artist doll and her looking ''other'' actually ended up with me selling all my Minifee and instead buying dolls that complimented her! It's not that I will only collect European artist dolls though, but they need to fit a certain set of criteria; slim/mature MSD with a smaller head and smaller eyes so as not to look bobble headed or bug eyed.

If you do, what do you think makes you do this? Why does it matter?
I like them to look relatively human, even if they're stylised in most aspects lol. And I like them to look nice together as a collection, I like taking photos of them together. I don't want any one to look out of place. I still love Minifee but they tend to look alien next to my collection now. Maybe it's because I'm a collector at heart but I get a strong sense of satisfaction when I look at them all together on the shelf and they just fit. :sweat In some ways it's good for me because it restricts my buying, even if I love a doll, I won't buy it if it doesn't fit - so I don't ending spending money I don't have hehe :XD:

    14. When I bought my two I couldn't stand how they looked together, they were meant to be father and daughter and it looked really off, they just didn't gel. So I slung that idea and now they're two totally separate things, different universes and such. My theory for my dolls is that as long as dolls that are in the same world/story/universe/thing (as in they'd be pictured together and sat together) look cohesive then it's fine, but in general my collection (once I've got more dolls) will be pretty mixed, sizes and styles and whatnot, just certain sizes and certain dolls won't be sitting side by side.

    15. My dolls don't have to fit with my overall collection, but they do have to fit with the dolls that are in their same story. So like, I wouldn't put a realistic style Iplehouse doll with my less-realistic "street kids" group because they wouldn't look right, but that doesn't mean I wouldn't get them, they'd just be part of a different story. I'm saving for several anime-style Obitsu dolls, and they obviously won't fit in with the rest of my crew, but the important thing is that they fit in with each other. :P

    16. Nope, my dolls dont really have a collective story.. I creat a small background story for all of them in order to be able to style them and clothe them but thats as far as i go. Sk i just get whoeve i have fallen in love with!

    17. A friend and I sort of have a world that all our dolls live in, but I've recently fallen in love with some fantasy dolls and some SDs that wouldn't work out in that world. The more I think about it the more I realize that as long as I love them, they don't have to live in the same universe. I think it'd be cool to have multiple "worlds" interacting with each other, too!

    18. So far I only have one doll, but she and the dolls I plan to get, will all have a cohesive look to them. They're all based on a story I have, so I want them to look good together. Plus, it's a good way for me to resist buying dolls.

    19. I totally did this when I entered the hobby.
At first I wanted to make a unified realistic world for all my dolls but nowadays I'm starting to feel tempted by anthro dolls and I would love to have one not to interact with my other dolls but with me, like he was a little creature who has ended up in our dimension for some reason.
In my case, I feel much better playing with different kinds of dolls, because I can let my imagination flows the way it wants to.

    20. I tend to find the dolls I like, then form a story around them. I have found that I prefer pre-owned dolls over brand new company dolls. I also spend a lot of time looking at owner photos and the doll In question. I think I tend to lean more towards realistic anime characters looking dolls. So far all I have at home are latidolls. I am expecting a volks Yosd which he looks a lot like my three girls, and I have a aloha mint frog for a friend for my incoming Yosd. I kinda like to keep them all in the same category. I looked at tons of Yosd company's n found that volks looks a lot like Lati yellows and a small anthro wouldnt look bad with the gang.
