Do you only buy dolls that would fit into your doll-family?

Jun 10, 2010

    1. Right now I'm interested in just MSD size, but that's not to say I wouldn't go for something completely different in the future. I do want "sets" to fit with each other, but I have one image of what I want, and then a completely separate image/story for a later time.

    2. Do you only buy dolls that would fit into your doll-family? If you do, what do you think makes you do this? Why does it matter?
Not that I have purchasing experience on this... but when I look at BJD stores (which I do a lot) I tend to go for similar dolls. So curvy & chesty females, thick & muscular males, chunky babies and minis, and sweet & cute anthros. I don't think I do it on purpose it is just the aesthetic that pleases me.

    3. My dolls are all MSDs, so they're similar in size and fit together pretty well. I don't see myself buying an SD size doll because he wouldn't fit in with the current crowd, or with the ton of props I've collected. And I really love the props!

    4. Do you only buy dolls that would fit into your doll-family?

No, because I have dolls for my OOC's, and they're widely spread. I have yet to have a MSD, but all dolls interest me. I'd buy one just because I liked their face(if I had to money)

For doll families within my doll family, though, I suppose I would only buy a doll that fit into that one small part ;p

    5. Do I try to buy dolls that “complement” each other? Well. . . Sorta? Kinda? I guess?

Background: Like some of the others here, I have/plan to have different “doll families”, mine of which come in pairs of three. If I find and fall in love with a mold that doesn’t match up well with one of the families or a family is already filled, I’ll just start up another. Now for matching them up so that they look good together, I think that’s rather subjective. Does matching mean they just have to look good together or does it mean they look alike?

None of the dolls in my families look anything alike; from sculpt to height to skin color. In fact, the couple I have a home right now are as different as night and day. Mordrant is a DZ Luke (45cm) with tan skin, blond hair, and red eyes. Caliban, on the other hand, is a DZ Hong (70cm) pink skin with silver hair and green eyes. Ironically enough, Mor is the elder and more dominant of the two. Their third will be a Leeke Koji (60cm) with gold hair, gold eyes, and gold blushed skin. (Are in order of age, descending.)

My second triplicate consists of a Iplehouse Ryushin (63 cm) with normal skin, violently pink hair, black eyes, and Yakuza based full body tattoos; a Iplehouse Felix (65cm) with special real skin, red-brown hair, brown-green modded eyes, and burn scars over 40% of his body; and a Crobidoll Ys B (66cm) with white skin, white hair, and grey-white eyes. (Again, descending age.)

I don’t think most people would find a combination like those particularly attractive (especially Mor and Cal on account of their size/perceived ages), but I really like them, even if the combination can sometimes look rather jarring. I suppose part of the reason they look so different is that they all are supposed to be of different races and nationalities. Should I have any dolls that are supposed to be siblings or otherwise genetically related, I may spend more time trying to match up molds; no promises, though.

Each person has their own view as to what constitutes “attractive”. Some of the pairings I’ve seen in the galleries I do not consider particularly attractive, just as I would assume other’s would find mine a turn off. But that really is the beauty of this hobby, isn’t it? Not only are the dolls themselves customizable to the owners personal preferences, but their interactions and relationships are as well.

    6. My intention was for my BBB Apollo, Stephen, to be my DM Kid Flocke, Emma's older half-brother. They almost look nothing a like. He has a pointed nose, and she has a rounded nose, his hair is gray, hers is a warmer blond. Her resin is more yellow, and his is more pink (I'll confess, I actually like BBB's NS color more than DM's). But all-in-all, Stephen's features are much more angular than Emma's which are rounder.

As of now, I do try to buy dolls that will 'fit' in at some point. I'm not into getting any anthro dolls, or dolls with fantasy resin colors, because they've never really excited me - except for the Pipos anthro dolls, because like Puki's, they're so cute. I'm also not going to get a doll taller than 60cm or so. They just won't fit.

But it seems like random family members come out of the woodwork. Emma wasn't even supposed to have an older brother. Now, the older brother has a girlfriend... and now, I think his not-even-really-planned-girlfriend has a brother who is just sort of out-there. Family members are abundant. I've cut a lot of MSD-dolls from my wishlist because I don't know where they'd really fit in.

    7. I would guess that my dolls go together because they are mine.I have actually had this convrsation with both my two friends wbo got me into the hobby. Acouple of my dolls my friends said ohhh those won't go well together and now they they love them. They dont doubt me anymore. So i guess that the answer is yes.....and no.

    8. Nah, I basically buy a doll that I fall in love with, and then, I decide on a place in the family while it's on it's way. I'm not very much into Pukis and Blythe/Pullips, though, so I guess that makes things a little easier.

    9. I buy dolls that I like whether they fit into a set group or not.

    10. I have two MSD girls and and five tinies. No the sizes do not fit together- the tinies have their own little town within the 'town' that all of the dolls inmy little world live in- whether they are bjd's, american girl, antique, etc. I also collect Fashion Royalty and Silkstone Barbie as well. Do the bjd's look ok next to the american girls??? no, but that's ok, they seem to get along with those 'other dollies' made of vinyl.

I would love to have an SD for adults for my two girls, maybe a couple. right now space & money is more of an issue rather than want- but I would say I mostly buy what I like, whether or not they fit into the group. The dolls usually find their niche when they arrive.

    11. There are a lot of dolls I want, but me and my partner have our little family planned out. That doesn't mean we can't add more characters. I'm just not sure if most of the ones I want could fit in, but I guess we'd just have to see. I know I need a littlefee sleepy head El so badly...

    12. I see my dolls as a kind of family in and of themselves, and by extension my own. The fun for me is photographing them interacting with one another, so I can't imagine buying a doll that wouldn't "fit" somehow with my others. Who knows though... its early days for me so that may well change :)

    13. My fmaily is very 'Mixed' It includes a:
      Faun Girl
      Winged Faun Teen
      Dark Angel
      Two headless schoolgirls
      A dragon boy
      and an average teenage girl.

      Really, nothing fits.

    14. I wouldn't say I'd ONLY buy dolls that look good together, but I have decided NOT to get a few dolls because they'd look SO incredibly out of place with the others.... but that's like.... DOD and bluefairy VS. migidoll and Iplehouse, y'know? VERY different aesthetic.

    15. it would be alittle acward having a dol that doesnt fit in your doll family, but if you really love the doll then go for it!

    16. I only have one doll right now, but I'm definitely looking at bringing more into the family. I really only want dolls that would fit with my Ada - she's modeled after one of my OCs for something that I'm writing and hope someday to publish, and I feel like if I got any characters that /didn't/ fit (were too modern or fantasy, you know) then it might mess up my character concept which... would not be good. But I find myself leaning more to the 'fantasy style' dolls - elves and vampires, that sort of thing.
Do you think I should stick to a family that would fit in with her? Or... do you think it would be wrong to change the Ada I have now into a completely different character so that the ones I hope to have in the future would fit in? I'm so conflicted XDD

    17. Do you only by dolls that compliment your doll-family?

Yes, definitely. I don't buy dolls that would look weird with my actual dolls.

If you do, what do you think makes you do this? Why does it matter?

I want my dolls to look right when put together, I want them to look harmonious together and to be able to take group pictures without thinking bananas about it!

    18. I have some Soom limited dolls with their fantasy parts on right now, but I've been considering changing them back into humans because the characters don't seem to fit in that great with the human characters. I find that I don't love my dolls so much when I can't seem to make them feel perfect to me. (Finding right clothes, wigs, eyes & even characters sometimes)

    19. Personally, my 'doll family' is any sculpt that really strikes my fancy~ Even if one happens to be a Pipos Cheshire, and one is a 70cm, and the other is a tiny, and not a one resembles the other. If I love the sculpt, they're a part of the 'family'.
However, if I were to have two dolls that were specifically meant to be relatives or a couple, in that particular case I would make sure they were of a similar sculpt or height.

    20. Since my dolls all have personalities based on how I feel about them when I get them, rather than based on a predetermined character, I just buy what I like. That said, though, I do tend to buy dolls in pairs based on size (usually male/female, but I do have a set of girl Pukifees coming in that will be Sumomo and Kotoko from Chobits). I also tend to like more realistic looking sculpts, so that thread runs through my collection. I swore I would never care about tinies, but when I decided to buy one, I bought two instead. Same thing with anthros; swore I would never want one, so I bought two. *shakes head* Right now, I can't imagine getting a doll with a more anime aesthetic, but if I do get one, you can probably bet that it will have a friend...
