Do you only buy dolls that would fit into your doll-family?

Jun 10, 2010

    1. I suppose you could say I only buy dolls that fit in to my doll family, but not for that reason. More for the reason there is only really one set aesthetic I like, therefore all my dolls end up looking alike and because they all look alike to some degree, they all look like family to some degree.

For example: Doll A has almond-shaped eyes, a rounded nose and pouty lips. Doll B has round eyes, a round nose and pouty lips. Doll C has almond-shaped eyes, a rounded nose and a not-pouty lip. So they have the similarities between them all that when put all together side by side, they look like they could be related.

    2. My dolls are all based off of a couple plotline 'worlds' that I have going on, and I have a really hard time keeping dolls around that don't have a more advanced back story. For example, I'm having trouble justifying my pd minis and my banji because dolls are so expensive and I feel like I need to have a real character that fits with the others to keep them around and none of them have developed stories or personalities unlike my MSDs. I've also had some that I bought as characters that I do really have a strong story for but ended up selling because they didn't fit the aesthetic that my other dolls have. If a doll doesn't match with my Iplehouse I boy, they don't make it around here very long (which I realized quite a while ago so I just don't buy dolls that don't fit anymore).

    3. I think its alright to have different types of dolls. The only thing I have to say about it is the big thing to do is if your trying to couple characters up keep them relivently the same. Dont have a yo-sd type with a idk a dollzone 70cm. like that. Its the only way I can think to put it.

    4. I actually WANT a lot of variety!!! ^^

I make it a point to not buy too many dolls from the same company. I want to try out different sizes, faces, skin colors, etc.

Sure, they might end up looking funny in a group picture, but I won't take too many of those anyways.

Whats more practical for me is probably to carry them out, and I want my friends (mainly non-bjd people) to be able to tell my dollies apart.

    5. Do you only by dolls that compliment your doll-family?

Not at all, most of my dolls will be different from one another. I like different.

If you do, what do you think makes you do this? Why does it matter?

      N/A

If not what are your thoughts on the matter?

In my experience, differences are good. Not all people are alike, even those in the same family, so why would I create a family of possible clones? Not that there's anything wrong with doll families that look alike. My current four are a DZ Mo, a Doll Family Wind, and a BBB/RS An and a Sprite. They aren't even the same race, let alone the same look. The Mo is a fallen angel with a demon for a husband, the DF boy is a demon/vampire hybrid with a vampire catboy for a husband. The An is an ice elemental and the Sprite is a bright purple elf from outer space. XD They really are very dis-similar. It entertains me to create my own little fantasy UN. I've plans for several other dolls from other companies once my finances straighten out.

Do you think different sized dolls can be involved in relationships?

Absolutely. My Mo's husband is a great deal taller so I'm looking at an SD for his demon man. In my fantasy world all my demons are uncommonly tall if they're pure-bred. And only a few of the elementals will be short, mostly its the more earth-based and water-based ones. The fire or light ones are also very tall.

Do you find the need to justify the relationships between your dolls, so for example i need to get him/her because my other doll needs a brother/sister/boyfriend/girlfriend ect?

No. They just happen to be that way because the characters come from a pre-existing 'verse shared by my best friend and I, and since I am into dolls, I have decided to give them resin form. She's scared of dolls.

Do you need to justify each doll in relationship to your others (i guess is what im trying to say)?

Nope. I justify myself to no one. I'm spending my money on something that makes me happy, once the bills are paid. And the dolls themselves have relatively little to do with one another besides the fact that they live in the same 'verse which is a ridiculous place. It's sort of a dimensional nexus where strays just seem to crash-land, and we let them hang around. XD

    6. I like to have dolls that go together but sometimes there comes along a doll that you just can't pass up. Lol and then you have to get a doll to match with them too. :)

    7. All my current dolls at home are somewhat 'in scale' compared to one another. I think my Soom Yos and slim mini Unoas look very good together. And the 'fitting in with the crowd' is pretty important to me, as they are all part of the same story and for photostories I need to photo them together. I got a regular sized MSD and although she was cute on her own, I just couldn't stand that she looked so out of place with my other dolls... With her bigger head (both TGs and Unoas have 6-7 size heads), larger hands and clumsier-looking body she just looked like an alien. :( So I won't be making that mistake again.

That said, I have an SD on the way XD But she's going to be all on her own scale and not really connected to my other dolls characterwise. So she'll be my one special big girl. If I got other dolls to be in her storyarc, they'd have to be in scale with her.

    8. At first I wanted them to match at some point but now not really. Each doll of mine has its own storyline and character plus I like variety. I dont want my dolls to look too similar, each one of them must have something that makes her/him different. Different sizes, molds, the way they dress, resin colour and so on. I like many dolls but often it seems like this or that doll is really similar to the doll that I already have or have planned to buy so I pass on them. The only exceptions are going to be 2 game characters that have to match together.

    9. Right now I have planned a circus performer, a succubus, two fairies, and a bluebird-girl... all MSDs. None of them are meant to interact with each other besides the fairies, none of them exist in the same continuity as characters (again, besides the fairies) and they all have totally different aesthetics... so obviously, I don't much care about them fitting together xD

    10. At first, I had a hard time choosing between white skin vs. Normal skin dolls because I wanted my dolls to look more cohesive together so I didn't buy dolls with white skin. However some molds just appeal to me more in white skin and since bjd companies have different shades of resin anyways so now it doesn't matter to me, I just buy dolls that appeal to me.

    11. As the current dolls I have are mostly off-topic and my first ABJD will not arrive for a couple of months yet (hopefully!), this is something I might have to consider in the future. I'ts likely I'd look for another doll (male as my first is female) from the same company to partner my first doll but beyond that?

I think I'm a bit of a magpie anyway so I'd be as likely to go for the next shiny thing at a good price!

    12. Not really. I usually go for anything that catches my eye. I have a few dolls that I try to match with another doll, but I'm okay with them being on their "own" and not paired up with another doll. It really doesn't matter. When I decide to sell a doll off and say that they don't fit in with the rest of the resin family I have,
it's usually more of a... I don't feel like I will do much with that particular sculpt and not really to do with being unable to pair them up with someone or photograph them as a family.

    13. None of my dolls could be considered belonging to the same family! They are all different sizes (MSD, yosd, tiny) and skin tones. The concept of a 'doll family' never entered my head until I joined this forum. I just buy what I like. I guess they are all from different times/places and somehow all ended up in this one together! I find that they all get along! lol:)

    14. I buy what I like and take little to no interest in how they look together. If somethings pretty I like it. I'm a bit random. XD

    15. if there is a doll i love and it doesnt fit into my doll family then why cant i make 2 doll familys? i think that if you love the doll then buy the doll!

    16. I believe my doll family is whatever I want to make of it. So if I want a certain doll, I'm not going to look at the dolls in my possession and worry about whether they would compliment each other, or look like siblings, relatives, whatever. If I'm drawn to a particular doll, there's a reason, right? So I buy the dolls I like, not the ones that "fit".

    17. It's silly to try a only buy dolls that match in size, style and proportions .....just buy it and love it for what it is., Lol :)

    18. I buy dolls that appeal to me, and that's pretty much that. I don't have a storyline, set characters, couples, resin families, etc. Dolls to me are just pretty things that I collect, nothing more. My characters are cheaper to keep on paper, not to mention a lot more versatile.

    19. I have a generalised sort of story that exists in my had - but if i love a doll then i love a doll. I am a massive fan of unusual dolls so this helps but i'd never restricted myself if i really loved the doll. Some of my favourites are as close to what you'd describe as 'normal'as you can get ^_^

    20. "Variety is the spice of life." I believe in that axiom. I buy dolls that #1 appeal to me, #2 their faces are astheticaly pleasing, and #3 are of a certain size range. I go for the larger dolls. My tallest is 75cm, smallest, 58cm. Sometimes I'm tempted by smaller dolls, but I have no plans to buy any. This is not to say that I wouldn't buy one if I saw one I fell in love with; but all my doll furniture and props are for the larger size dolls.
