Do you only like 'anime' style BJDS or more real-life human styled BJDs?

Dec 12, 2010

    1. I kinda like both, but if 'anime' means big eyes and a little childish face I'd say anime. I think that dolls have to have a face with big emotion and expression because they can't talk and make faces and the expression is easy to make with big eyes. Of course I'm not saying mature looking dolls lack them! But it's different.
I just feel that childish dolls are friendlier, and closer to my heart. :)

    2. It depend what you mean by human and anime. I saw few that look like Korean boy and I also saw those smaller one that you have to draw on the big eye.

They were all beautiful but I guess I kind of prefer something in the middle, not to human but not too anime either.

    3. Just the process of thinking through my response to this thread's question gave me some insight into things I hadn't previously considered about my personal taste in dolls.

My sister and I did start off our collection with stylized Dollzone dolls - but I still like them now, two years later, so I suppose my preferences haven't so much shifted as just expanded since then. Also, I often chose particular sculpts not because they adhered to any general "anime" aesthetic, but because they reminded me specifically of the distinctive style of some of my favorite manga artists. For instance, the angled features of DZ Yuu brought to mind Kaori Yuki's edgy, sharp-eyed characters; DZ Chen was reminiscent of Matsuri Akino's serene symmetry; and DZ Clovera was like one of Yumiko Kawahara's sweet and airy plant dolls in resin form.

... And then La Lรฉgende de Temps entered the picture. What drew me immediately to their Roderich sculpt was an almost classical, sculptural feel to it that I couldn't help but admire. (I get that vibe from just about all of the other sculpts that LLT has released so far, too.) Only when he got home did I fully realize how much more realistic he was relative to just about everyone else in the doll group. From that point on was when I began to more strongly appreciate the aesthetic of companies such as Migidoll and Raurencio Studio. (Minimees are still too hit-or-miss for me, though; while there are some amazing ones out there, I feel that finding an accurately proportioned body and convincingly natural faceup for such a hyperrealistic head presents some major difficulties.)

So at this point, I enjoy choosing those special few favorite sculpts, some of which will then make their way onto my wishlist, from a pretty wide range within the stylized-to-realistic spectrum. I don't demand much stylistic cohesion within the collection, other than between family members, so it's all fun and peachy! :D

    4. I prefer the anime style because I like creating my favorite characters, like the entire Fruits Basket Sohma family and friends. But, I will admit the more real looking dolls are growing on me too.

    5. I love the human like dolls. But I admire somebody's anime like dolls too.

    6. It's somewhere in between for me. I like male sculpts with mature faces. Some anime styled faces can pull that off but the majority of them are all about the cutey, innocent, 'I'm in high school' look. I guess you can say I like my male dolls to be manly (but not buff) and exude that air.

For instance, I dislike the majority of Volks' sculpts because I feel that they are lacking substance and are too childish. Then again, I don't particularly like the majority of what Iplehouse has to offer either because their uncanny resemblance to plasticized models of fashion magazines is a total turn off. And don't even get me started with Soom (I know, gasp!). I definitely respect their skill and creativity. Though... I feel that I can turn their males into females very easily with those big pouty lips and gently swooping eyes.

I like dolls such as the newer DOT/DOI male sculpts, anime style yet very intense and a sculpt that is very versatile for powerful expressions via faceups. I love the latest work Raurencio has created, not too realistic, delicate facial curves yet all man and very ethereal.

    7. I'm not a big anime lover. I think anime heads are kinda cute, but I prefer my dolls looking a bit more natural. Although I LOVE putting weird hair colours on them like bright yellow or blue :)

    8. I think it really depends on the size. I prefer natural looking ones in SD size and anime in smaller size.

    9. I think they are all pretty and fun to look at, but for my own personal collection I prefer the more realistic sculpts. The possible exception would be for a DD of a particular anime character, but I don't have any plans for that, currently.

    10. For me it depends on the day - I don't like the overly "cartoony" dolls, but depending on the day it seems like I may or may not like the more anime style LOL I think that Dami (the doll I am saving for) is a bit of both... she doesn't look too much anime or too real either. Her eyes are larger, but I feel it makes her look innocent.

    11. I lean toward more realistic sculpts but like to have a hint of anime style thrown in for good measure.

    12. I prefer more stylized sculpts, but not as extreme as Dolfie Dream style. My collection consists of mostly CP sculpts - 4 Luts Delfs and soon to be 5 Fairyland dolls. I would go so far as to say that CP sculpts is as close to perfection as I found - they are exactly my taste - stylized, but with a touch of realism. Custom House and Bluefairy are my other two favorite companies, as their style is very close to CP. The most realistic I'm willing to go in my collection is Soom - but, just MSDs and smaller, as their SD-sized dolls are on a more realistic end of the spectrum for me.

I used to collect fashion dolls, but was never 100% satisfied with their look, so the more realistic proportions of Iplehouse and such do nothing for me - remind me too much of the fashion dolls, just bigger and better.

I am glad that the hobby is now big enough to cater to all tastes and styles, since I certainly appreciate BJDs from all ends of the spectrum, even if I don't want to add some to my collection.

    13. realistic dolls more by far, my friend has a dollifie dream which has the really anime-ish face and it just isn't my style. Also I really like big lips and anime-ish dolls tend to have practially non-existant mouths.

    14. I never really liked dolls that looked too much like anime, such as dollfie dream. it's not my style.
but when I started I did like the most stylised sculpts :) CP soony and chiwoo (they have freaking huge eyes!). now I do not like dolls like that anymore, I really prefer more realistic sculpts and I am very perfectionnist with proportions! (iplehousssssse ~<3 )

letheral: agree, I also love big lips :3
I also dislike huge eyes and love long noses. anime faces are the complete opposite! (almost no mouth or nose. only eyes 0.0 )

    15. I prefer extremely anime-styled dolls such as Dollfie Dream. If only there were male dolls like that... :aheartbea

    16. I acutally like both. I love my anime styled Dollfie Dream Neris, but I also appreciate more realistic looking bjds.

    17. I never considered fairyland and luts and those types of dolls 'anime-style'. It's just... an asian aesthetic, really.
Anyway I guess I would prefer those types of dolls best. When dolls are too realistic it actually really bugs me. They're much prettier, I think, when they've big eyes and such.

    18. I learn towards realism. The animeish ones are cute and all, but...they're not really my thing. To me, if the dolls don't look someone realistic, something just seems -wrong- with the doll. The eyes seem too big, or even if I can't pick out a specific THING that bothers me, it's just wrong. Some people can pull it off in the pictures, or with their personal character designs, but I'd never be able to get one myself. At the same time, I do like a little bit of stylization, and I love the fantasy ones, but the features at least have to be more realistic.

    19. I prefer anime. I got into this hobby because of Danny Choo and my love for anime. It was the fact that there was a character that I loved that was in doll form that made me want dolls. However. I am slowly expanding, though I have many Dollfie Dreams, my first resin doll from Alice Collections is coming soon! I do appreciate the realistic dolls, but I definitely still love my anime style dolls.

    20. On a scale where 1 is minimee-level realism and 5 is Dollfie Dream, I would say I prefer a 2 or maybe a 3. I don't really feel there is any rationale behind it, those are just the dolls I am drawn to haha.
