Do you only like 'anime' style BJDS or more real-life human styled BJDs?

Dec 12, 2010

    1. i love the more realist styles but i find them expensive

    2. i dislike hyperrealism in any and all art mediums, but i'm not super into the very anime-like styles either. (very large eyes, etc... though i admit i do still have a soft spot for volks school As and the like haha) so i tend to like sculpts that are somewhere in between! proportionately a bit more realistic, but something where i still feel like i can see the sculptor's hand in the work / where the sculptor has made some clear design decisions as opposed to just hewing to realism or to a more conventional beauty standard.

the dolls i've found most interesting lately have been doll-chateau dolls, actually, which i don't think are either anime-style or realistic!

i like their fullsets a lot because i feel like there's a really strong artistic vision behind them... i'm not sure if i'd ever buy one of them though, because i don't think i could ever bear to take it out of the fullset clothing and customize or dress it in anything else haha, i'd feel like i was messing with someone else's art... not super sure if it'd be worth the money to me to buy such an expensive -- though beautiful -- piece of ornamentation. and they're so different from what i already have / my outstanding orders.... where would i even put them haha. i don't know... maybe one day... :') whatever the case, i do hope to see even more work from them in the future and to see more sculptors branching out into more unique personal styles too!

    3. I like the more realistic ones but the others do spark an interest.......

    4. I like a mixture of both, ones who are anime but still very realistic. It also kind of depends on the character I have in mind. I have realized I lean more towards the more realistic looking dolls rather than the super anime dolls, but I still am very curious about many different sculpts. :)

    5. Great question! Before I got my first (as yet only) doll, I thought I'd probably get an anime style one, cos I love the style of anime and manga. But my doll is one of the more realistic ones (AoD Rao), even though neither her hair nor eye colours are even remotely realistic. I think I bought my doll with ideas for her back story and life in mind, and it was easier to apply my ideas to a less stylised doll.
I LOVE some of the anime ones tho.

    6. I like to find dolls that are a happy medium between the two. I don't like many dolls that are TOO realistic, but I don't like the huge huge eyes. Unless it fits the character particularly well, which wouldn't for most of my future doll buys for my characters.

    7. I like the realer looking ones because the anime ones just seem like a bit much to me. I am fine with them when they are smaller but when they get to the larger sizes they seem like a bit much. Plus it would be harder for me to justify buying a anime style bjd and I can get a similar action figure. (Yes I know they are different but they are very similar to me) Though at the same time the ones I like learn towards the Korean anime style so not sure how legit this is XD

    8. I love anime, but strangely I prefer the more realistic looking dolls, weird.x

    9. I love anime, but I'm not a huge fan of anime style dolls. Some of them are cute, but I prefer an in between: not too realistic but not as cartoony as anime. I also find that I don't like the animetic eyes with rare exception.

    10. I prefer realistic ones, in fact I find I prefer more rugged looking, realistic males to the feminine one's too. I think this is also why nothing smaller than SD has really appealed to me until you start talking actual fantasy part dolls (Impl's deer, and a couple of their babies with the crazy limbs.). You don't find much in smaller sizes that hits a realistic and rugged cord.

    11. i am more on the anime side since i am a big fan of anime :D
the issue that i don't bond to real-life style is because i am scared by the clay figures in Hollywood :|

    12. I lean more towards 'human' styled, but anime styled ones can be adorable. And I am an anime nerd lol

    13. My preferences run to whatever catches my eye... there are some of both styles that I like, and some of both styles that I don't like one bit.

    14. I love both! I never got into watching anime but I have always had an appreciation for all the art. If the sculpt speaks to me , then I get it ( if I have monies of course!)

    15. I think both styles can be really appealing although for my characters A LOT of them need to be a little more on the realistic side. I think the anime style is adorable though and do have a fair few on my wishlist anyway

    16. I personally like the more anime style dolls. Course I really like anime so that could be part of it. Course I just bought an AOD doll that has realistic features so go figure. Thanks to Volks, I only have a DD head so ironically enough I prefer the animetic ones, but the only complete doll I "own" is a realistic looking doll. I think another aspect for me is that if/when some one comes across my dolls I can play them off as anime collectibles rather than being just some random doll that I created and gave a name to. Being a heterosexual male, these kinds of issues are important...at least for me lol.

    17. I think I'm more towards the realistic side of the dolls. I think that's what got me attracted to these dolls in the first place. But I do like the cute looking dolls as well, especially the yosd, although I don't know if they're considered anime looking?:aheartbea

    18. I like both, but then again, I'm picky. Some realistic dolls are a little too accurate for my tastes and it turns me off quickly. As much as I admire the craftsmanship, I probably wouldn't buy them. On the other hand, I love anime styles dolls, but there are some like the volks dollfie dream that are too cartoon like and just remind me of nendoroids! I think there's a nice middle space where I like a blend of both. :)

    19. I love realistic dolls. The anime ones are great too! can't go wrong with either choice I think.

    20. I think you can't beat the realism of an IH doll or a junky spot LIMHWA doll. Anime style is fine for some people but I wouldn't spend money on it. I like dolls that look like they're alive and breathing.
