Do you only like 'anime' style BJDS or more real-life human styled BJDs?

Dec 12, 2010

    1. I DO like both of them.
Just looking at pictures of the more mature/realistic looking dolls makes me drool all over them.
when it comes to owning one myself. I'd go for the anime-type.
Probably just because I'm a geek.. and a newbie, so I'll already have my hands full with the more "basic" anime style.
And I'd just be too scared to handle the really expensive looking ones. I probably couldn't enjoy the hobby, being too scared of breaking anything. at least at my newb-level right now

    2. Im into real-lift look sculpts more~ cant tell the reason why, maybe its just like. or maybe real-life looking sculpts are more art like? LOL

    3. I really like both, though they look really strange photographed together. There are specific styles of each I really enjoy.

    4. Sometimes, when a thread is this old, I don't remember if I've posted in it or not... and I'm too lazy to check. But answers change, right? I'm sure mine has!

For YoSDs and even some MSDs, I prefer the more "anime" style -- that is, I like them looking more stylized than realistic. But for my SDs, I tend to prefer sculpts with heads more proportionate to their bodies, and eyes that aren't very large. My tastes lean towards Iplehouse and Crobidoll in that respect, though I don't mind a more stylized look.

When I first became aware of the hobby in 2006, the dolls fell in love with were a Luts Cory and a minifee Chiwoo. I once had plans to add senior delfs to my collection, and I think all dolls, super stylized to realistic to artsy, have unique and beautiful qualities to them... from Iplehouse to Luts to Doll Chateau! So I like looking at everything. XD But as far as my collection goes, I stick with dolls that look like they would fit with my iplehouse SDs. That's generally a good rule of thumb for me... and it keeps my spending in check.

    5. I'm a fan of the anime-shaped eyes, but I find most of the anime-like dolls have poorly define features outside the eye shapes.
So I'm a bit in the middle, more towards the realistic ones.

    6. I like realistic faces the most, though, I do love anime faces like Dollfie Dream. What I don't like are the heavily stylized faces found in a lot of Western BJDs.

    7. I honestly can't choose between the two looks, it really depends more on the bjd in question and the look I'm going for with a particular bjd. For example I adore the Doll Chateau and Thaasa but also really like the Iplehouse ones. Maybe I'm just really indicisive, sigh ^^'.

    8. I prefer the more realistic looking BJD's. To me they're a lot nicer looking, and worth the expense.

    9. I personally LOVE realistic dolls. Ones that make you really wonder "how they got that cheek bone to work like that?" But I personally like buying dolls that have a little more of an "anime" feel to them because I draw in that style and I grew up on it too. :sweat

    10. I don't like anime ones but neither do I like life like one like iplehouse... I like them realistic, yes. But somehow not too human like... Something more unusual. Like dollchateau!

    11. I dont really like the anime style because it feels like I'm just buying another figma or something (which i like anime figures) but why spend 400 on an anime styled doll when i could just get an official 30-150$ pvc figure of a character i like. I don't hate anime style dolls I just wouldn't want one :p

    12. I like the realistic ones, they have this very expressive and amazing look that could even get awed. Their price are just worth it and they seem to be quite mature and beautiful. I don't like anime-like dolls either

    13. I hate the very anime-ish dolls, but I am not at all into anime. It just doesn't do anything for me. I tend to lean more towards realistic. They don't need to be hyper-realistic, however.

    14. I really like the stylized dolls the most. My own doll is based off a character I use in illustration and little stories and the way I draw her is kind of "chibi" (but not anime) so I like my doll to resemble that.

      The more realistic dolls can be quite beautiful but I don't fancy the ones that look too much like a real person. I adore the cuteness of dolls more than realism ^^;

    15. I like both, but i do prefer the less realistic anime faces. Just because i think they look more doll-like and the realistic strong jaws look a bit strange on a doll sometimes. But I change my mind a lot and fall in love with a lot of unexpected sculpts, so you never know, I might get a super realistic doll some day.

    16. I'm a realie, over here. I prefer realistic to overly-stylized. It didn't start out that way but over time (and exposure to more sculpts), I moved away from the more cutesy styles.

    17. Most of my dolls, if not all, are what I'd call semi-realistic. My fairyland dolls are less real looking than my two SD girls (I have three tinies, so they're never exactly realistic!), but they're all still pretty realistic . I never thought I'd want an 'anime' doll, but recently fell in love with an SQLabs girl, and I really hope I can get her home eventually!

    18. So far it seems that I'm leaning toward the more "human" look than the anime styles. One friend expressed her interest in Blythe/Pullip dolls when I mentioned BJDs to her, and when I went home to look them up my reaction was lackluster. A recent Iplehouse special Rex male (the army man in June, I think? - unable to confirm from work computer) had me all atwitter on the other hand. I can definitely appreciate the beauty in all representations, though!

    19. I love fantasy dolls so I would say my preference is a mix of both. I'm an elf girl at heart.

    20. I prefer the more realistic human looking dolls. Although I do like some fantasy vampire and/or elf types but even they are still realistic looking rather than anime
