Do you only like 'anime' style BJDS or more real-life human styled BJDs?

Dec 12, 2010

    1. I call my preferred style "Expressive Realism". Although real life reference is of great importance, fully photorealistic things easily fall into uncanny valley territory. On the other end of the spectrum, although extremely stylized things can be cute, fun, interesting, artistic and imaginative, I generally don't feel as much as an attachment.

I find that to get the right balance of realism requires a certain amount of animated style, slightly larger eyes, slightly exaggerated features, help give a stronger impression of an expression and personality. You need to touch things just off of 'perfect' to give something the spark of life. As a taxidermist, I find that this is the biggest issue that divides the good from the bad, I believe that art needs to look back at you, not just sit there with a bland unfocused stare.

That the early BJDs were almost solely a bland, expressionless anime style is the biggest factor that I never got into them when they first became popular in the States, I had many friends interested in or actively collecting them, but I just didn't find any of them appealing to me personally. It's why I was rather distressed and felt compelled to make my own dolls, although I've found more sculpts that suit my tastes as I've explored more of the hobby.

    2. It really depends, because most BJDs I have seen are generally realistic, while they have some loose to heavy anime influences. As a person who is generally found of realism mixed with loose anime influences, I kind of don't really see a difference in any of them. However, Iplehouse dolls, I think they kind of mixed some realistic anime styles with American comic style, which makes it pretty easy to tell that it is Iplehouse.

    3. I think it changes all the time, but for now, I like anime style in compare. Those anime faces could easily make me think of everything beautiful, and that make me feel life is beautiful. I got healed by those sweet faces always.

    4. I prefer the more realistic looking dolls, only because I feel like they have a lot more personality to them.

    5. I enjoy looking at a more realistic BJD, mostly because they bring to life my imagination.

    6. I personally like both, each one has his pros and cons but at the end of the day I tend to pick realistic molds as favorites. Almost all the time at least.

    7. I would say the more "anime" styled despite not liking anime. But I enjoy the cute factor and find im more attracted to the unique appeal they have.

    8. I guess it depends, i've seen some amazing life like creations, and like wise with anime inspired ones, I prefer more life like IMO they seem to draw more character to their faces.

    9. I prefer more realistic but stylized sculpts - the kind with human features that are just a touch exaggerated. I am very fond of the Obits Gretel's though, which I think are a nice blend of anime and realism.

    10. I like more realistic looking dolls, I'm not so fancy with anime-style.. I like to see owner photos of them with self-made faceups and such, but I just can't think to get one for myself, never. I want my dolls to look either mature or childish (depending on the character and character's age ofc).

    11. I tend to fall for the more realistic looking BJDs, but do like the anime ones as well. The dioll has to capture me no matter what the style for me to want him/her.

    12. I like both... And here in Osaka ive only found the Volks store... Tho I prefer realistic ones when I have a choice XD

    13. I like anime and anime-style art, but I think of it as, well, casual, and not something really high end that you'd spend big bucks on. Considering the cost of the typical bjd, I'd either want a realistic style or an unusual arty style (i.e. Doll Chateau) to feel like I'm getting my money's worth. JMHO, though!

    14. Personally, I prefer more anime-styled dolls. They just seem a lot cuter to me. And sometimes, realistic sculpts can look TOO realistic.

    15. I bit of both, I would be a slave to fairyland and iplehouse as I adore them so so much, and if I could I would get every single doll from there.
So to answer the question I love both!

    16. I cant believe this threads still alive! haha. I'm now liking both styles. I'm just worried when I put them next to each other, say an iplehouse next to a luts, they won't fit the same 'family'

    17. I'm more into realistic looking dolls but I want to at least own 1 anime looking bjd.

    18. I prefer more human looking sculpts. It's one of the reasons I'm not really a fan of Volks.

    19. I love Dollfie Dreams , cannot get more anime look than that ;)

    20. I honestly like both! but I do tend to lean more on anime styles since I am a big fan of anime xD
