Do you only like 'anime' style BJDS or more real-life human styled BJDs?

Dec 12, 2010

    1. I just find it amusing because Volks really stopped producing the overly stylized anime sculpts years ago and now their girls can have some of the biggest noses you can find on female dolls. Cristal looks like she played hockey growing up and Emma and Pearl could be related to Ringo Starr. They're still stylized and far away from hyper realism, but it's really only the DD's that have that huge eyes, tiny nose, tiny mouth look to them anymore and a few standard hold outs from the old school like Nono and Mimi. And poor Nono was just discontinued as a standard.

    2. ROTFL they should make lil masks for Cristal.
No kidding, however they did come out with some very extreme FCS sculpts this year and last.

    3. When I just came into the hobby about three years ago, I was definitely into anime-like dolls / characters, as their gentle, yet somewhat realistic features were extremely different from the variety we had on the market.
But after having a good look around I started to feel more passionate towards realistic sculpts, although still in the ABJD stylistics (i.e. those I could actually make look a bit Asian). And this is where I am today.
I love Supia, many of Soom and several Souldoll molds if we speak about companies. I also like Dollstown and Zaoll. From the more stylized companies it's definitely Luts and Volks (especially Elena, but she doesn't really look all that animeish to me, if that's even a word :sweat)

    4. Given that the lion's share of my crew are Cerberus Project sculpts, with Volks coming in as the second, my tastes are obviously pretty well set at the stylized end of the scale. Even my Sooms (Heliot, Bygg, Glati-) are on the less-realistic side of things, and that big lug of an EID? Even though he's closer to "Real Life" than an El or a Shiwoo, no guy on Earth looks like an Akando.

    5. As I've gone on in the hooby my taste has evolved into more realistic dolls. I can't really say why.

    6. I tend to learn toward anime/stylized dolls, particularly the larger-headed models. ^_^;; Mostly because the characters I need to shell are anime-styled characters. But I like some of the more realistic ones just as much...I do have an Iplehouse Mars on my wishlist. ^_^;

    7. I have to say that my favorite dolls are in between realistic and anime, not one extreme or the other. As others have mentioned, Dollmore has some pretty balanced sculpts, and I like theirs a lot. But I guess I also lean a little more towards realism; for example, Souldoll has some beautiful dolls that are realistic, but are still stylized to a degree. I feel like the more "in the middle" the doll is, the more perfect they are in my eyes. That being said, even though I'd never own a very stylized doll, I still love looking at pictures, and I think they are also really beautiful. :)

    8. I love Supia, Elfdoll, Souldoll and of course Zaoll Luvs. My characters are based on people in a book more so than characters in a comic so it makes sense to me to mold them as more realistic molds. I was rather disraught when I first started hobby because most molds were so stylized but I'm happy to say I have plenty of options now. I have a friend's minimee here for the holidays and he's amazing, though I may prefer two degrees down from that.

    9. i definitely prefer the more realistic sculpts iplehouse, souldoll, bobobie mei. i've always liked the concept of scale models so accurate that you have to reallly look to tell that they arn't life sized.

    10. It really depends on the character I'm trying to create. Well, no, if I really think about it I'm probably going to have to go with the more realistic ones. My favorite sculpts all come from Iplehouse and Soom (though Soom I consider to be very stylized and borderlining a slightly more mature "anime" style). Even in mods I've seen of animals and the like I tend to appreciate just that hint of realism brought into the dolls while knowing that they are stylized enough to be too beautiful to be "real."

    11. Does seem to be a pretty even split ^ ^ I used to hate volks with a fiery passion because their dolls never seemed as molded as others, what i mean is where others seem to have all different features and creativity, volks seemed to just do the big eye small mouthed dolls but i have grown to now love big eyed females with tiny lips. I still think my favourite company is B&G and probably always will be. I love soom and iplehouse females , the realistic ones, but i find their bodies too..harsh? i dont know a good word, they are too amazony which is weird cause im built the same way, maybe thats why i dont like them? ^ ^ I guess I want my females to have a more fragile look in body shape. I guess everyone has their preferences and of course nothing is wrong with liking either, i like both for their own reasons i just tend to fall to the anime style more. but someday i will have a carina. and a sabik. yes. i must have a sabik O_O

    12. Sadly for me--I like BOTH.

      I have--
      4 CP/Luts
      2 Volks

      and

      3 Soom
      2 Iplehouse

I think I might have more realistic dolls if I'd come into the hobby more recently as the styles have shifted a lot over the years from more stylized/anime to more realistic. But I do like the more stylized dolls, too.

    13. I prefer my sculpts to be either very stylized or very realistic. I don't really like the in-between (that is so common right now).

    14. For me, both have their strengths. But for preference, I do tend to go for the more realistic-type, rather than the anime-like dolls. Maybe it's because the Dollfie Dreams, for example, seem way too stylized for me - outlandishly large boobs, as well as really thin waists. And a lot of the outfits that I've seen are kind of skanky.

But I also think that the human-like dolls have more variation in terms of customization. Like, I could see myself having my human-like doll with both anime-esque and realistic eyes, but I can't see an anime-like doll with realistic eyes.

    15. I think I like a nice mix between both styles. I want a BJD that looks like a character, not one of my anime figurines I can pick up at a con.

    16. I completely agree!! I love it when the doll looks real and for a second you wonder if they are!! lol

    17. Realism. Never been an anime fan.

    18. Yeah; Iplehouse has some crazy sculpts that look too human! It blows my mind, really.

    19. This makes perfect sense to me. They don't say "The eyes are the window to the soul" for nothing ;)
For me to really fall for a doll the eyes have to be very expressive, and I find this is often the case with more stylised faces.

    20. half way in between? The Volks anime heads I really don't like, but I also really don't like the more realistic faces. I like oversized eyes and smooth cheeks, no cheekbones or dimples plz.
