Do you only like 'anime' style BJDS or more real-life human styled BJDs?

Dec 12, 2010

    1. Well, compared to other dolls BJD is very anime like, and I love that, but there's also those BJDs that look way too anime like; they don't really have a proper mouth and weird head-neck proportions because of a very weak chin... :sweat no, I'll skip those.

Otherwise I like both anime style (for their more obvious doll-joints and androgynous faces) and more realistic (for the over-all pretty bodies and faces. Not a fan of their jointing though).

    2. I tend to start in the middle and work more towards realistic.

    3. I strongly prefer realistic BJDs, the more realistic - the better, there is no "too human" for me. I also try to give them realistic faceups to emphasize their appearance. Honestly, I'm not into Asian stylization and anime at all... I love BJDs for their detailed look and great posability.

    4. I deeply, deeply preffer highly stylized dolls. Realistic is just NOT for me. I like big eyes and interesting porportions. The more highly stylized the better.

    5. I think I prefer both ? :p
but I can't deny that I really like Iplehouse's realistic sculptures

    6. Stylized, but to an extent I guess..? I dislike how some boy bodies look suuuper stretched out and emaciated, that's too anime styled for my liking, but in terms of faces, I love big eyes and more youthful features. ^^

    7. I dunno- my DM Maunier has AMAZINGLY expressive eyes- I've got two Dollmore dolls and at least three more planned, and those faces just seem to have a wealth of different expressions- I guess this is why I like that style of doll so much, to me the O.O style dolls don't have any expression whatsoever... It's been really entertaining to see all the different opinions in this thread, people really do seem to develop their own tastes and they differ so much sometimes!

I do think though that it depends on what you consider "realistic" and what you consider "stylized". For example, I think DZ is pretty stylized, but I still kind of like them, and CP Soony is on my wish-list even though she has MASSIVE eyes (her extreme pout makes up for it a lot ^__^) Then again, I also love Dollstown's 15 year boys and nearly everything from Latidoll and Iplehouse. They seem like very realistic sculpts to me (Latis in a kind of chiseled model-type way :D)

    8. Well, I tend to prefer dolls that are stylized, but not too anime-ish either. The way I like to describe my favorite doll sculpts to people is, "They look like they stepped out of FFVII: Advent Children." I hope that's clear, because that's the best way I can describe them. ^^;

Dolls with eyes that take up over half their heads don't make me happy. >.>

    9. Preferably both :).

    10. I like both. I don't really think I can coose just one style, though I do tend more towards the anime style. I am very particular about the how stylized they are though. I don't like super anime type dolls with hugenormous eyes and small mouths, but nor do I like the super realistic types like many of the minimees (no offense to either group!)

    11. Ditto. I really dislike anime, actually, so the anime/stylized dolls are right out for me. My favorite dolls tend to be those that are more realistic with fantasy elements--think elf ears, fangs, wings, whatever. My ideal would be Iplehouse style realism with elf ears. Those two ideas are totally at odds, I'm aware, but at the same time, those fantasy elements seem, to me, VERY different than the huge eyes/little nose/small mouth Volks style.

That being said, I'm still really new to the hobby, and though I've been through lots and lots of sites, it seems that new things just constantly crop up!

    12. I own two Dollfie Dreams, I guess that gives away my choice XD.

I do prefer more anime, styled BJDs, but some realistics molds can be really beautiful! ^^

    13. I like my dolls to look more realistic if Im honest im not much on the anime, big eyed style dolls for some reason
though i totally respect anyone who likes them! :) cause sometimes they can look really amazing, but thats just me

      x

    14. I like both style because I love anime and the more realistic dolls look so cool. But if I have to choose I really can't.

    15. My first interest has always been Anime. I was drawn by the stories, the movies and the depth of characters in some of my favorite series. There is quite a collection of anime memorabilia in the house. When first introduced to the BJD lifestyle, I was thrilled to see anime based dolls out there. But then, the idea of characters for my dolls came into play, and I have found myself gravitating to the more realistic or perhaps middle ground if you will. While I will eventually own a DD, my current preferences are building the doll family that fits the story line I am currently building.

    16. I actually like the more realistic ones better, though I don't know why. I don't actually own one though, so I don't know if I would like owning one more than the anime-styled ones?

    17. I tend to lean towards both. The ones that I own, are more stylized. However, I LOVE seeing beautiful realistic looking male dolls. I can most certainly appreciate a female/male doll that looks like a person even if I don't want one of my own :/

    18. I personally prefer more realistic anime sculpted ball-jointed dolls. Not all ball-jointed dolls looks exactly similar, but most of their features are based on anime/manga. The more accurately correct proportioned dolls like, souldoll, dream of doll, etc; are as beautiful and it doesn't make me not want to purchase them. They don't resemble Barbies at all, they have more of a fake feel to them, I don't care for that at all, they're not very artistic. My taste of dolls varies a lot. I pay more attention to a great sculpt of details, so if it's innocent bubble eyed, then so be it. :)

    19. I prefer realistic dolls over stylised dolls, just because they appeal to me more. On humans I find smaller eyes and stronger jawbones attractive, and it makes sense that I would also be drawn to those things in a doll. (My pretty-boys definetely have to be -boys-, if you catch my drift.)

That's not to say I'm not into anime - half of my DVD collection is various animes and movies, but they're more the 'Shonen' shows like FMA, Ruroni Kenshin, Darker than Black etc. I'm not really into the Shoujou or Moe styles and I think this reflects in the fact that my dolls have more realistic features than the more stylised dolls. (In my eyes, the stylised dolls tend to lean towards the Moe or Shoujou aesthetics.)

Also, I have my anime figures and I have my dolls. Never the twain shall mix.

    20. I agree with tehbunnehfoofoo – if there were more companies who did indeed have variety of realistic-looking sculpts,
my collection would probably be a lot bigger. I think the thing here is "personal opinions" of what “looks real” and what doesn’t.
What is "realistic" to some, might not be that "realistic" to others – more than half that list of companies you mentioned I find
have very stylized/anime-ish sculpts (Volks, Elfdoll, Oasis, for example I don’t consider realistic). But other people just like you
probably think of those sculpts (and others) as highly realistic, so I think it’s just a matter of different views of reality. (:

I find it very interesting to see such diverse and wide spectrum of opinions about “real-looking,” even at this stage in my life
(and after so many years of being a commercial artist). This is an awesome topic!
