Do you only like 'anime' style BJDS or more real-life human styled BJDs?

Dec 12, 2010

    1. I prefer more realistic sculpts, but it also depends on the dolls size.
For large dolls I'm drawn to realistic faces but for my Yo sized ones
I don't mind, and actually prefer, less realistic babies like Sooms TG's.
As for MSDs I'm torn.....somewhere between real and Anime, I guess.
But I'm not a fan of dolls with very large eyes or pointy thin noses or
other features. That said, I've been attracted to more unusual sculpts
more and more lately so maybe my tastes are changing.

    2. Usually something in between. I neither like super realistic sculpts nor the very stylized ones in general.
But it really depends on the doll and the character I want it to represent. Especially when it comes to tinies, a less realistic look is what I often find extra adorable.

    3. I think I prefer the anime-ish sculpts, just because I enjoy that type of sculpt. When Fairyland came out with the Chicline, I really didn't like them all all because, well, they were realistic. Also, with the anime-ish dolls the eyes tend to be bigger so I can show off the beautiful glass eyes easier, and I also find that a lot of the molds have softer features. But that's just my personal taste.

    4. I definitely prefer realistic.

    5. I prefer human like bjds.. the anime types just freak me out. D:

    6.

I thought I preferred a sort of middle ground, but after reading the first post, I suppose I prefer a more anime style doll. When she said "anime style," I thought of the Volks vinyl dolls, but Luts is my absolute favorite company and the original poster considers them to lean toward unrealistic.

I appreciate the more realistic dolls; I am always blown away when I see BJD pics that I swear could be real people! I love the "that's gotta be a real person!" "nuh uh, see the joints?" conversations, but to own, I prefer unrealistic.

    7. Since my collection is predominantly Dollfie Dreams I guess my personal collecting preferences are pretty clear.

    8. i prefer the dollfie dream dolls more than the more realistic ones. IDK what it is but the more realistic dolls tend to creep me out for some reason lol

    9. Personally, I love both anime style and realistic dolls, for me it just depends on the sculpts features really.

    10. Of my 13 dolls, 9 are Cerberus Project sculpts, which I guess says it all really! I wouldn't term CP sculpts "anime-like"; they are stylised however. I just prefer their otherworldliness. I don't think you could mistake any of my dolls for real people.

Whilst I can admire the more realistic sculpts and the way some artists can make them seem completely human, I wouldn't be comfortable owning one - they fall too much in the Uncanny Valley for my liking.

    11. Hi all... =]
Well I dunno... I like the more exotic dolls, such as Enchanted Dolls or Cerise Dolls, but I love both realistic and anime like... I love Dolfie Dream faces... they're so cute... I also enjoy SOOM dolls too, they have some "animal hybrid" dolls I really find interesting! =D

    12. I prefer owning anime-styled dolls over the more realistic ones, but even if I don't want to own more life like sculpts, I absolutely love looking at other peoples more realistic dollies.

    13. I like the realistic look for my dolls with a little bit of fantacy. Like elf ears or hoofs. :)

    14. Super realistic dolls can be really beautiful. I love looking at pictures of the ones that make you do a double-take to decide if they're doll or actually human. For my personal collection though, I don't think a more realistic doll would blend well with the more stylized ones I already have. As for the most extreme stylized (DD anime-style) dolls, I think they're very cute and enjoy seeing owner pics, but again I don't feel they'd fit well in my more middle-of-the-road collection.

    15. I like stylized dolls, generally speaking, but as far as BJDs go, I really prefer the more realistic looking ones. I guess that's what drew me into wanting a BJD is because they look far more lifelike than any other dolls.

    16. More realistic dolls for me. The extreme anime dolls with tiny mouths and noses but giant eyes scare me a bit. They don't look human enough, to me. I love realism in all forms of art. Plus I haven't been into anime since I was about 13. I think if I still liked anime, I'd probably like more anime dolls.

    17. I like both myself! But there's no accounting for taste.........If you like it, go for it! I've never been like "I'd never get this doll, it's eyes are too big." or "I'd never buy that doll, it's too realistic!" just whatever appeals to ME. This is a very personal hobby.

    18. I like dolls that look doll-like, but not necessarily anime-like or human-like. I very much enjoy a nicely sculpted nose and set of lips, which isn't often found in anime dolls. That being said, I am absolutely a sucker for big almond shaped eyes, which is rather anime-ish according to some people. But I don't like ones that make the features too human either, because that's a step too far into the uncanny valley for my liking. If anything, I think my style of doll is closer to stylized than it is to anime or human.

    19. When I first got into the "hobby" I was overwhelmed by all the different sculpts I was finding and mostly they were the anime styled ones. And, naturally, there were ones that did not appeal to me but there were many that I thought were SO stunningly beautiful and I wanted no less than 100! I started out with a Dollstown girl and a DIM minimee celebrity. So, my first two dolls consisted of a more anime-ish style sculpt and a realistic sculpt. The difference in eye size is huge!

I tend to use the anime-ish sculpts as my "younger" set and my more realistic sculpts as my "older/mature-minded" people. Often I find that my big-eyed dolls are the most innocent, like children. :)

    20. I enjoy looking at both, but all the dools I'm draw to are kinda of in between in there looks. I guess I just like that balance.
