Do you only like 'anime' style BJDS or more real-life human styled BJDs?

Dec 12, 2010

    1. I'm definitely partial to anime style dolls. I primarily collect DDs since I love that aesthetic, and I tend to like more stylized BJDs rather than the more realistic looking ones (which can sometimes be a bit uncanny valley for me...^^;). It really depends on how well their faceups work for them, but I almost always prefer the anime-like aesthetic.

    2. Most definitely realistic! Being a seasoned collector of antique, compo, and hard plastic dolls at a time when the only dolls available were childrens' "play" dolls I had always wished for a human-looking doll. So when U-Noss came out I had to have one. But now, I look at her and she is so very anime that I can't stand her. I love Soom dolls, Iple facial sculpts, and really, any BJD that has a realistic face, i.e., the smaller eyes, wider, larger lips, and proportionate nose and jaw line.

    3. As of late I've been drawn to the more 'realistic' dolls, especially the boys. That being said, my entire doll family is comprised of CP and Dream of Doll, so at this point it's awkward to own a more realistic doll. I had a Souldoll Kagel for a few weeks and while he was absolutely stunning, he couldn't have looked more out of place with my other dolls. Soom has caught my attention with their supergem males, and while I would like to own one of them, I'm a bit wary at how he will look with the rest of my wide-eyed, big headed CP dolls.

    4. I really like more lifelike ones myself, like say the ones from soom. I'm not at all a fan of volks at all.
I really also like anthros but I will only allow myself to have one, hence the lovely layaway charlotte!

Actually, it would be more accurate to say,I like lifelike fantasy dolls, since all of my dolls have pointed ears (I have a thing for Spock/LoZ ears .-.)

    5. I prefer the more realistic dolls, mostly because I've kind of grown out of anime, and I have a hard time watching anime that's horrid or badly animated, has bad music, bad dialouge, horrid storyline, which happens quite a bit actually... I think there's a lot more that you can do with the realistic ones creatively, also. Theyre a bit more versitile.

    6. I'm somewhere in the middle. Extremely realistic dolls - especially faces - creep me out because they are rarely in scale with their bodies, and they look like deformed people. Higly anime-styled dolls don't really do anything for me though. So my favourites are mostly the semi-realistic features, that are idealized but still closer to the real-life aesthetics^^

    7. I find I also like a medium. I like the whole "big eyes, small nose and mouth" but not to the point where they look anime character-like.

    8. I enjoy the middle, being they aren't anime eyes and such, and also I love fantasy dolls - hooves, wings, the whole thing.

    9. I do tend to like the more realistic ones. But anime ones are great too... The great thing about bjd's is that their customizable so even the realistic ones can be made to look more anime XD

    10. i like the more "anime-ish" style for sure... i like the ones with the big dough eyes *_* hehe, but i'm not a fan of dolfie dreams...

also, i don't like it when they look TOO real... creeps me out XD

    11. Personally...i prefer the reslistic one....Although animal styled seems more cute and dreamlike.

    12. I think everything depends on the mold... personally I prefer fantasy, anime-like creatures, but this style doesn't suit every doll

    13. I'm definitely in the 'anime style' camp. I look at real people all day long, when I go to play with my dolls I want to see something different. :P

    14. I can't say I like one over the other. I like to look at dolls that are really well done and look like they've had a lot of work put into it :)

    15. I don't care for anime, my dolls are all realistic. I had only a vague idea what anime was until well after I got into the doll hobby!

    16. Well my first doll had more animeish features big eyes etc because at this time I was really into anime and stuff. But my second doll is more human looking and I have to say I love the more human looking ones. My taste in dolls has majorly change as I've grown up.

    17. I like the more realistic sculpts. I like my men manly and my women curvy! Though I'm actually far pickier about the body then I am the face sculpt. I wanted a doll so badly but all the male bodies i saw were rather "manorexic" for my tastes. Then...I came across Iplehouse and was totally smitten.

I'm a little more lenient on girls sculpts than boys since the larger eyes are what I find attractive on females IRL. The dealbreaker for me with them however is the lips, since i like full ones. Not little duckface ones.

Boys...I'm terribly picky. I want a strong jawline and nose wih eyes that aren't too large or too small with decent lips.

    18. I currently own only one doll and he is more based upon realism...I am, however, a huge anime junkie and can really appreciate the quality in the anime faceups as well...(considers investing in one in the future)

    19. I definitely go for the realism - I love Soom, LLT, Granado, and DollsTown.

That being said, the Minimee heads freak me out like whoah. I can't put my finger on it, but there's something about them that steps far into uncanny valley for me. I think it's like watching a CG film that's trying to be realistic. There's enough about the art that isn't quite right that it triggers the "it's not quite right!" instinct, even though I can't put my finger on it.

    20. I like the more realistic Dolls, thats why I was drawn to souldoll, and plan to get an Iplehouse.
