Do you personally match eyebrows to wig color?

Jun 12, 2021

    1. Nah, too many of my dolls have fantasy wigs… it would look weird. But I do try to pick eyebrow colors that wouldn’t clash with multiple colors.

    2. That is a good question, I recently ordered grey wigs for my boy (with the brown hair and grey beanie in my picture), the wig he currently has is brown and he has light brown eyebrows. I was wondering if his new wigs would look good with his eyebrows, because the wigs I ordered for him are dark grey. Ideally I would like for them to match or at least compliment each other without standing out. I'll be sure to post a picture on here whenever his new wigs come in.

My other boy with the white hair has black eyebrows but I think it looks good with his white hair. I know he'll look good with other color wigs as black usually pairs well with other colors.

As someone who browses though galleries on here and under the BJD tag on Instagram, I don't really pay attention if eyebrow and hair colors match on doll photos. So, as a viewer, I don't really notice it on other dolls, just my own.

    3. I honestly have all natural colored eyebrows even though my dolls wear some crazy colored wigs! I would send the wig to the face up artist. I know I send eyes and if I can, the wig.

    4. I go for more neutral colors, though even if they have a decided hair color I still might switch up the wigs from time to time so it's a safer bet for me. I've done matching-but-darker fantasy color brows on rooted playline dolls and it looked kind of off? But that might just be my inexperience at brows

    5. You make a great point and I am definitely going to send the wig for reference! That sounds so stressful possibly painting the wrong color just because of photos. I know color matching is pretty useless digitally from graphic arts for various reasons.

Can you elaborate what made it look "off"? That's what I'm worried about because canonically the characters have black lines for eyebrows so this is literally up to my interpretation and I'm especially worried what color the one with the lavender hair would be if I don't do basically the exact same shade as the wig. A brown seems too severe and a darker purple I'm not even sure about.

    6. Depends on the doll and if their wig color would be their natural color or not. I typically make their eyebrows match their ‘natural’ color, be that blond, brunette or teal! (My incoming girl is from another planet, teal is natural for her.)

    8. Not really! I just use various shades of brown -- it goes well with any wig in my opinion. It's not a disruptive colour and can go OK with both dark wigs and light wigs and unnatural colours. One can of crouse paint a blond eyebrows if the doll is blond but light eyebrows are, in my experience, too blend looking and not noticeable enough.

    9. I just felt like my eyes were drawn too much to the teal eyebrows over the rest of the face which was pretty neutral, so it might be an issue of balance as well. The doll I'm thinking of had basically baja blast colored hair so I probably didn't get an exact match for the undertone which is very distracting. I'm sure a professional faceup artist would do a better job of choosing an appropriate color if you're sending the wig in :3nodding:

For lavender hair a grayish shade might look nice!

    10. when it comes to cosplay I'll usually try to match my eyebrows to the wig I'm wearing (if I'm not feeling lazy lol)
if you're thinking of keeping the same color wig for the character I don't see why not! neutral brow colors don't hurt either! if you do go with matching the color, I find that making the brow color a shade or two darker makes it look more natural. That usually helps make it look less off!

    11. Most of my wigs are darker, I love changing wigs fairly often, I suck at faceups, so...neutral grey or brown eyebrows for everyone it is. :)

    12. Ideally I would like my dolls' brows to be the same color as their hair except a shade or two darker, however they pretty much always end up a bit lighter for some reason, even though I keep their wig (or the mohair I intend to make their wig out of) next to me when doing the faceup. :sweat When I don't yet have a wig for them or haven't decided on what their hair color is going to be when doing the faceup, I tend to make the brows dark brown since in my opinion that looks nice or at least acceptable with basicly any color except black. :3nodding:

    13. If I know what wig I want to use for a doll, then yes. I will match the eyebrows to the wig color when I do a faceup.

But if I want the faceup to be more general purpose with a lot of wig switching for different looks, I will do something neutral such as brown or gray.

I think if you are looking to shell a pre-existing character, just basing the faceup colors off of the character is the way to go. :3nodding:

    14. Actually yes, I do! It's most noticeable with my dolls with pure white hair or very light blonde hair, I think... for some reason they just look wrong with black or brown brows. I feel like consistent eyebrow colors just add an extra layer of cohesion to their whole look, and to me it's so weirdly satisfying when eyebrow color and wig match perfectly.

The way I customize dolls is all about making a very consistent character design, and I don't usually change up things like wigs. If I do, I'm certainly not changing the color!

    15. In painting Pete and Billy, yes, because they were each going to have one wig, it was easy to do a close match-- and because I knew if I did wind up buying them additional wigs, it would be keeping to the same color exactly, rather than mixing it up the way I do with some dolls.

With Marigold and Vince, doing eyebrows I try and aim for what their default wig color will be, but accept that they won't always match because those two I change up.

With Jack, he's got dark brows and I knew I'd be getting him dark hair. With Deanna, hers aren't going to match but that's okay with me-- I'm experimenting with different blondes on her, and her eyebrows are darker, but it's something that can look perfectly natural, especially as I'm leaning towards the middle ground between a dark blonde and a light brown for her.

    16. Sometimes I so sometimes I don't. It just depends on what I feel fits the best.
