Do You Prefer Anthro dolls to Human Dolls? Ever Wonder Why?

May 22, 2023

    1. I have almost 50 dolls, and most of them are animal - like sculpts from Dearmine, Pipos, or they are Zuzu Delfs. I also have a large amount of pet dolls meant to be companions for human doll lines. I own 5 or 6 human dolls, but they are definitely in the minority! I often wonder why I prefer the animals to human dolls, and I know I'm in the minority. I like to dress my dolls up like human characters so the dolls I prefer really are anthros, and not realistic animals.I also prefer dolls that are no larger than 10". The only exception is my bjd horse, Sage, who the anthros get to ride on. Does anyone else prefer anthros to human dolls? If so, why do you think that is?

    2. *waves* Yep!
I see human dolls and can think they're stunning, ethereal and even if they're not my taste, I can appreciate the work that goes into them. But if I think of owning one, it's like... no. No thank you.
Show me a cute cat girl, a beautiful alien boy, a teeny tiny kitty cat, a skele of any size and styling and my bank account will start weeping:sweat

The reason? Eh, I'm not much of a fan of humans so I don't especially want a doll of one

    3. Most of my collection is anthros. I've always been drawn to animal cartoons thanks to Disney. I've fallen in love with Dream Valley because their animal sculpts are what I like. I prefer dolls that are dogs which there are few of them compared to cats. I do have the Dream Valley Safina on layaway right now.

    4. I wouldn’t necessarily say “more”, but I’m definitely as much into them as I am the human dolls. My collection is quite fantasy based, so any kind of BJD could wind up living here…human, elf, anthro or planthro. I just love creative diversity! And the fun and unusual things companies are designing these days? It’s mind-blowing!:)

    5. I have just discovered Dream Valley! I have Neil, who is one of the dogs from the 'Dangerous' set of two dogs. I really like him!

I'd like to get a skeleton, too, but there's always some cute new little rabbit or cat I want! Every Halloween I kick myself because I didn't get a skeleton!

I love the fantasy dolls, too. And many of the human dolls are simply stunning. I love to look at them but I always buy the anthros!

I make photo book stories with my dolls! I'm doing a story about Laplanders in Finland and a little girl who lives in the forest and is visited by creatures from Scandinavian folklore now. I have about 20 followers of people who like to see the entire story unfold. My flicker site is Janetlinn21

    7. /stares blankly at the collection of fursuit heads in the craftroom

Yeah, no idea how I got that sculpt preference. Weird, that.

    8. [gestures at profile pic I’m using while I don’t have any dolls around] Same as Cryptid said, lol. I just like anthro art in general. I’ve always been an animal person and I guess it extends to a fondness for fantasy creatures! Human dolls can be gorgeous, and I’ve had them in the past, but to me, something about anthros—and elves and vampires—is just more interesting.

    9. I like the stylistic choices! I also read a lot of stories with anthro characters when I was a kid (Redwall, Peter Rabbit, every other children's cartoon and book ever), so these designs are nostalgic.

    10. For me, it's strange. Being a big animal person (especially cats), I thought I would really get into anthro-cat dolls. I even ordered a Dearmine cat girl after becoming infatuated with somebody else's at a local meet. But I just... never really bonded with her, unfortunately.

I do like unique cat-like bjds (hello Dream Valley Moon :D), and have a soft spot for elf ears. Do those count? A humanoid sculpt just isn't complete without some splendorous elf ears:XD::thumbup

    11. I think I like the nostalgia element, too, as I loved Kenneth Graham's Wind in the Willows and similar books!

    12. Half my crew are animals and the other half are humans, but I do not think I prefer the ones over the other necessarily. In my case, it maybe has to do with the fact I did Biology at the university and I really like all kind of animals. In fact, domestic-type animals are what I like the less (even though I have a cat irl that I love to pieces).
When I started, I didn't know anthro dolls even existed, but now I have a giraffe and a bat from Dearmine, and a wolf from LUTS and they are so fun to simply watch and specially to write stories about. They are much more interesting to me in terms of what worlds, societies and tales I can imagine with them than plain human dolls living in a plain human world.

    13. My first doll was fully human, but after that it's been anthros all the way. I shouldn't have been surprised, but somehow I was lol. It started with a weasel boy, then a cat taur and lastly a eagle anthro.

I might give in and get Order while they're still available....he's probably the only other sculpt who could tempt me at present.

    14. I'm not sure how many dolls I have at this point so I don't know what percentage of them are anthros but they are often the dolls that I am first attracted to.

I prefer ones that are mostly animal with a few human characteristics rather than the other way around. And I haven't really gone for the all-animal or "pet" dolls, although a lot of them are really lovely.

Lately I'm finding more anthros that are not animal based but part plant ("planthro", haha), insect, planet (I have a few moon-heads and others), or inanimate objects. I recently discovered a little candle that I'm loving. And there are some very cute robots out there. I've also seen some TV heads that are amazing.

And then there's my egg collection, seven Humptys, and I'm hoping Soom doesn't come up with any more variations to tempt me!

So, plus factors other than personal appeal--most anthros are on the small side so they are easier to handle, store, and photograph. For the most part you can dress and wig them or not. And they generally cost less than the large human dolls.

    15. I thoroughly enjoy anthro dolls over the humans. Do I enjoy people dolls? Absolutely all the dolls are pretty. But there's something really appealing about the fantasy dolls with more animal features, it feels more fantastical and changes the silhouette so it gives you a variety of characters. Sometimes the humans blend for me, but I do that with real human faces to. Having antlers, a long necks, a detailed muzzle can make a doll stand out. Maybe it's because I just noticed the anthro dolls more, but they also appear to me to go all the way and do more fantasy colors. I'm partial to blue and red dolls, even green which increases the variety as well.

    16. Anthro dolls are what finally got me into the hobby! I never really understood the appeal of strictly human dolls, though the level of detail often impressed me, but it wasn't until I realized how many anthro sculpts were out there that I really started to understand the appeal. Honestly, I'm glad, because it narrows down the amount of dolls I would ever be interested in spending money on by a huge margin. I've gotten back into using IG to keep up with more doll news, and I saw the head that Birdcube is releasing this week and I immediately had the "I have GOT to have this" reaction. I told the friend who introduced me to BJDs that I probably would wait a while until I got another one, and I wasn't sure if I was interested in anything larger than a YOSD in general, but it turns out all you have to do is show me an anthro head and I'll be all over it!

    17. While I'm not that interested in fully anthro dolls (aside from a couple rabbit ones I've seen around), I usually like my dolls to have some kind of fantasy aspect, like elf ears or animal parts. For me it's mostly because I enjoy writing my characters in a fantasy setting, so those kinds of designs work well for that.

    18. Although my collection heavily skews on human females, I would be open to adding a "Niko" with the interchangeabe translucent faun parts from Shoushou Doll to my collection. Niko's 3 heads express a playful sense of adventure. Shoushou's Kitty Coco and Bunny Doudou with their "animaux" parts are my second favorites.

    19. It was a spidertaur that got me into finally collecting bjd. Since then I've picked up elves and anthros, over normal human dolls. The latest one I'm waiting on is Phoenix from Dream Valley, because I couldn't resist those talons or the wings.

    20. I do find myself attracted to the anthro and animal bdjs more because I'm obsessed with animals and always wanted the animal dolls and toys over the regular human ones. This is ironic because I have more humans right now than anthro/animals.
