    1. Hi there! I'm quite new to the BJD community but I've seen a lot of variation in terms of doll styles and sizes. It made me wonder if there are any sizes that to be more popular, as well as why people in the community might go for dolls of various sizes.

Personally, I currently prefer small dolls from 15-30cm, partly because they are more affordable but also because I don't have a lot of storage space for dolls. I also find tiny things super cute and before I could afford BJDs I bought second-hand Sylvian Family figures and made tiny clothes for them.

    2. I opted for "other" because I like all sizes (except, for some reason dolls around 8 inches, whihc I LIKE well enough, but which never seem to bond with, so they move on sooner or later as it's better to sell them on than leave them neglected on a shelf).

I don't have the patience to sew for the really tiny dolls, so I prefer to buy their clothes and concentrate on sewing for the bigger dolls.

    3. I chose minis because I don’t think I could handle an SD sized doll as my first. They look huge to me! Maybe in the future, when I’m more experienced :3nodding:

    4. I don't have a particular preference, so I chose "Other". Each size has their pros and cons and I like them all. Smaller dolls are easier to hold and dress, but larger dolls have way more presence and so on.

    5. I strongly prefer larger dolls. I’ve tried to have smaller dolls in the past, but I never keep them. Oddly, I also love tiny things and am drawn towards really tiny figurines of various kinds- I just like my BJDs to be at least 50cm tall.

    6. I collect minis! I love that there are so many artist dolls in the MSD size range, and I love that you can find super mature looking minis as well as minis that have a younger appearance. There is so much sculpt diversity within the size!

I also like their weight ranges, they aren't too heavy to carry but the resin still feels substantial. They are also pretty easy to carry around or transport if needed!

Also price certainly helps, as I feel like buying MSDs fits better in my price range than SDs do. But, I love SDs and maybe one day I'll switch over my collection... we will have to see!

    7. Personally, I prefer owning SD sized dolls.
But I know that their size isn't always the most convenient for anyone with limited space. I don't even have "limited space" and 22 of them is a large amount of room to dedicate to them.

I think that the most popular size is likely the MSD size, it's easier to carry and they seem to have a more expansive wardrobe. Most people sew for this size and I feel like companies market to that size because of their popularity. They're easier to store and usually pose easier than the larger dolls. I personally don't care much for them because I feel like they're very on par with fashion doll sizes, and if I wanted that; I would buy a fashion doll. I have had them in the past and I didn't feel a spark with them like I did the larger sizes.

Tinies are fine, just not my thing. They're cute and I'm sure they're perfect for any limited space. I actually love looking at the animal ones, I find them adorable. But I have no desire to own any at this point, they primarily sat on a shelf and didn't budge the entire time I owned them. Not fun for me, and certainly not them! :XD:

    8. I’m a MSD collector myself, I find their just right for when I have them out for display but I have yosd as well. I have 5 dolls in the MSD size and all of them are so unique and special to me. <3

    9. When I first found the hobby in my early early teens, I fell in love with SD sized dolls exclusively. But when I could actually afford dolls as an adult, I started out with MSD size cause they're smaller. But, I plan to have a (mostly) SD sized collection when I can afford it. There's only a handful of MSD dolls I feel I could actually bond with, so I only have two in my current collection plans and I have the head for one of them. I keep looking at smaller dolls and I like them, but then I end up realizing it's only a like, not a love like what I have with the bigger dolls (it doesn't help I like male dolls almost exclusively and prefer the way SD male dolls are stylized)

    10. The majority of my collection is Mini/MSD sized. I have a handful of Tiny/Yosds that I very much like but the scale is difficult for me to customize. MSDs for me hit that sweet spot where they feel sturdy but not too heavy, have a large variety of sculpts, they fit my space & budget well, and are big enough to work on without needing high-powered magnifiers.
I might get an SD in the future, but would like to see some in person first.

    11. Tiny mature dolls (1/6) are my favorite. I moved to them pretty quickly - I have three 1/4 size dolls and they're great, but something about the tinies just works for me. I've always liked miniatures and making tiny pottery sculptures is something I enjoy, so the attraction is understandable.

Cons: Makes it hard to get clothes in the styles I want and I'll have to learn how to make shoes, which is the only downside. Also, most of the guys I want don't exist in 1/6, as far as I can tell.

    12. I’ve owned all sizes but I find I love the larger dolls the most. I’ve actually sold off the majority of my mini and tiny collection, so most of it is SD and larger now. I do have a couple of minis and tinies left. But anything smaller than a Yo-sized tiny just doesn’t get a lot of attention. So I sold them all off. I did just reorder another Littlefee as I’d sold most of them and kind of regret it. They’re a great size to travel with, but anything smaller is just TOO small for me.

    13. I love large dolls. There's a ton of mini dolls with faces I adore, but I honestly just don't enjoy playing with them as much. They're not as fun to hold or hug and sewing is harder, in my opinion, at smaller scales. The ones I really don't touch at all are my tinies. I dream of owning a Kinoko Juice girl, but I know I'd never play with her. I'd love to try a Holiday/DSD/BB sized doll! They have all the cuteness of tinies but in 1/3 scale. I just haven't found the right one yet.

    14. I like the idea of large dolls, but I just don’t have space or money for them, so I think I’m gonna stick to minis for now. There are also some tinies I adore that I want to get, because I love the idea of being able to take a doll with me wherever I go

    15. I mostly have large dolls, and most are in the 60 to 62 cm range. I do have a few MSDs and YOSDs, but nothing "tiny". If I were starting now, I might stick to smaller dolls because of space limitations, but when I started collecting I was not really aware of the various sizes available.

It dawned on me the other day why I like my SD dolls more than others. When I was a child in the 50s and 60s, we couldn't afford expensive toys, especially since there were four of us kids.. The dolls I had were small dolls such as Ginny and Betsy McCall. I was kind of jealous of my best friend because she was an only child and her parents could afford to buy her any doll she wanted. She had bigger dolls, and I always wanted ones like hers.

    16. they're impossible to shop for, but I really like the 50cm range, like my unoa zest and dollnoize wrath. there's such a huge difference between 50cm and 70cm, it seems strange to group them together! I have some "regular" SDs (58-66cm range) and if I could shrink them down just a little, I think I would.

similarly, I like the 30cm size as well! always the in-between sizes... and of course I started out expecting to only collect 1/4. I guess 30-50cm is my just right place!

    17. My preference is anything under 30cm and I find anything under 20cm to be the perfect size.

Some of it is space related (or lack thereof) but mostly it's because smaller dolls just feel right for some reason. Ironically, when I was a kid I had a ton of Barbies but my faves were the Kellys , Skippers and Stacies, so I'm thinking this preference is just hard set from my childhood :sweat

1/4 isn't a bad size per se, I do have a doll on the smaller end of that (39cm) but I do think the odds are good that she'll be my only doll that size because I do find it easier to work with and photograph smaller dolls.

People's 1/3 dolls? Absolutely gorgeous and there's a few bigger girls that I would just love to own and style but then I remember how my 1/4 is almost too big and my temptation goes for the most part away.

    18. It’s very interesting, because I’ve seen my taste in doll size change. Although, not for any particular reason. I used to love large, medium, and small sized dolls, and now I love tiny and micro sized dolls. I was first introduced to tiny dolls, but it wasn’t long before I was introduced to large dolls and favoured them.
I never bought any large dolls, in fact the biggest doll I ever purchased was a medium sized doll and I only owned two dolls at that time (the other was tiny sized). After owning her, I let myself have some time away from dolls completely. Now that I’ve come back to the hobby, I find that I love tiny dolls, and they’re very cute. In fact I’m waiting on a tiny now; my first since coming back to the hobby. ❤︎

    19. Ahh, this made me realize something similar. We were also poor growing up, but I had a friend with American Girl dolls that I was absolutely enchanted with. Especially as a kid, they seemed huge and had way more presence than the dollar store lots of Barbies I had myself. Even those Barbies were a major financial and societal concession on my mother's part, so I had no chance of getting an AG... but my preferences are pretty similar in size to them even now, though a little bit taller. 40-45cm is definitely my ideal range.

Smaller dolls are also fine but I really don't enjoy handling the bigger ones, especially once you get past 65+ cm. They're wonderful to look at, I follow a lot of releases, space isn't an issue... I just find they're best enjoyed in other people's hands for the most part, for me.

    20. I picked "Other" because even though the size I like best is about 50-60cm, it really has a pretty hard ceiling ~60cm. Bigger than that and I find them too heavy, even if they are beautiful, and smaller than that and I never really see styles that compel me, or they feel too much like a fashion doll like Angelesk said.

I think what I would *really* like best, but which just doesn't exist are dolls that are about 52-56cm.
