1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

Do you prefer to buy dolls from the same maker, or a lot of different makers?

May 21, 2019

    1. I like to have a variety of different companies dolls. But I do have one company that I try to buy whenever they do have a release because I love their sculpts so much

    2. I have dolls from lots of different companies; though there are some I come back to time and again (Fairyland, Resinsoul, Dream High Studio, Daisy Dayes, Dream Valley). I DO like trying out new companies, but it's not really a factor when I buy a new doll. Aesthetics and articulation are most important for me, but I seek out other's who've bought the same or similar dolls to get their impressions first. It's all well and good if the doll can bend like a yoga master, but if they can't hold that pose even with sueding...

I'll say this though, it IS exciting trying out a new brand; it's like going into undiscovered territory

    3. For me, all the dolls I own were dolls that I loved at first sight (two are also character from a novel I love), and for me that only happens with RingDoll.
Which is why all the dolls I own are from them, their sculpts, clothing, wigs and everything are really within my taste.
Not going to lie though, I have liked dolls from other companies but I have never actually loved the dolls enough to buy them.
It’s also easy not falling in love with dolls that have no faceups, since I am not an artist and I don't want to deal with they anxiety of commissioning a faceup and sending the head and/or doll to an artist.

    4. Ringdoll is always my favourite maker! I'd say that it's love at the first sight so I've always wanted to own its boys but ended up owning Dream Valley because that time I wasn't confident enough to invest much in this hobby. But recently I bought a Ringdoll and the dolls on my wishlist are all from this maker.

    5. Starting out I tried dolls from various makers: Bobobie, Myou, Loongsoul, Charmdoll, and Volks. Eventually I came to prefer the aesthetic and feel of Volks dolls, so my collection is made up of only that company.

    6. I have a lot of dolls from different makers I just buy the ones I like I have a few which are from the same company and the most dolls I own from the same company are Dollzone (older sculpts) and my most favourite company of all time no longer exists which is Dream of Doll I wish I had more of those.

    7. I used to have dolls from different makers. But throughout the years my collection has become tighter and now my collection is only from volks.:kitty2:kitty2

    8. I prefer some of companies, not only one. It’s true that most of my dolls are belong to one, however, I’d like to buy more beautiful dolls, so I prefer various makers!

    9. I would like to have a variety of different makers, because it seems nice to have dolls with slightly different bodies, as well as faces! People in real life have varied proportions, after all.

    10. Personally I am always trying new companies. I've been that way with all my figure collecting throughout the years. I like to see which ones I may like more. Maybe this company has better articulation, or that company has better quality in their sculpts, etc. I'm always curious to see what each company can offer in terms of their products.

    11. A lot of different makers, that seems to be my way of buying dolls nowadays. I love having variety in my crew. I like having my dolls on all different bodies (even though it's sometimes a pain to clothe/shoe, heh), and I play a lot with them and want to experience jointing/posing from as many dollmakers as possible. I have 8 dolls plus a 9th who's currently a floating head, and they represent 11 companies (some are hybrids). So far I've been pretty contented to own one piece of resin from a maker -- full doll, or just head or just body -- and not revisit.

    12. I was really eager to have lots of variety at first, and aimed to have no company repeats -- I now have several dolls/heads/bodies from the same companies, some of them even the same molds. I never thought I'd have any volks and now they're the company I have the most dolls from :sweat I also have a huge knack for alchemic labo, and keep going back to souldoll's bodies.

Not everything I've bought always worked out so I've just leaned more into my preferences over time - it's also nice to recognise how one's taste develops and what it needs to be catered to! My collection is not the eurovision or a trade fair that it needs to represent different companies after all :sweat

    13. When I went to my first meet-up, it was before I even had a doll. There were a few collectors that only had dolls from Volks and Soom. Their collections looked really nice but I knew then that if I ever collected more than one doll that a single company collection wasn’t for me!

I still like how those sorts of collections look nice together so I think I have found a sort of in between. My collection is not very large, but about half are Volks and the rest are something else.

I feel like I am drawn towards dolls from a handful of companies (I don’t own from all of these yet) — Volks, Souldoll, Luts, Supia, Soom, Little Monica, Peakswoods, a few others.

When I buy a new doll I think I am more inclined to add one to my collection if I like most of the sculpts from that company. If it’s the only sculpt I like, I am finding that I am less inclined, maybe because if I have one, I like the option of giving them a friend or partner that best fits their aesthetic.

    14. I have a good mix, I love the variety, but I definitely have some favorite makers, some of whom I've purchased from again already, and others who I haven't yet but would gladly buy more from in the future :kitty2
I do like each doll to bring me something new, but it doesn't have to be new maker, when the same maker has different bodytypes, colors, sculpts to choose from.

    15. I get my dolls from all over! It isn't that I intentionally limit myself to 1 doll per maker/company or what-have-you, but rather that I go where inspiration finds me. I find that my group is close enough in scaling that they generally look cohesive in spite of their various origins, though, so I think my taste is consistent even if the companies I buy from are not.

    16. I enjoy variety but my gut wants me to stick with what I know I'll be happy with. It's a bit of a struggle sometimes.

    17. The vast majority of my collection is Volks, but I also have dolls from Dollzone, Bimong, Dollmore, Mori9, Angell-Studio and ANother Secret.

The most important thing for me is that my dolls have to look somewhat cohesive together in terms of head size and body dimensions. This means no super-realistic proportions, which given current doll trends, eliminates a lot of new releases for me. I've tried owning smaller heads (Loongsoul, IOS, Dollmore) but even the lovely sculpting couldn't break my eye seeing the smaller headed dolls as the odd ones out.

I like looking at independant artists' works, who often only make heads, which then leads to the search for the ideal body in terms of posing, sculpting and resin match, so I'm always checking out new bodies that catch my eye to see if they might hybrid with one of my floating heads.

    18. More prefer certain styles, so l love iplehouse, both what I have and not yet owned. I am more like that kind of person that keeps buying from the same company once I found them good unless they really disappoint me

    19. My taste varies a lot so the only real constraints I really have on my collection are ease of purchasing, cost and whether or not they’re going to require dismantling and blushing to get the best out of them. I’m clumsy and not good with handling blushing so tend to avoid dolls that require it no matter how much I love the sculpt.

Although I don’t intentionally stick with particular companies I’m going to buy their dolls if I like the sculpts, it’s purely coincidence that a large percentage of my bjd are made by Fairyland.

    20. I like variety, but have some criteria regarding detailed, expressive hands, and body posability etc that I seemingly cannot let myself negate on, so there's that. But, with those variables accounted for, yes, variety, and different doll makers.
