Do you take your limited or rare dolls out of your house?

Nov 28, 2010

    1. I don't have any limited or rare dolls however i treat all my dolls as carefully as possible so i wouldn't be concerned taking a rare/limited outside or to a meet or otherwise treating it as i would my other dolls since i treat them all like they're made of glass.

    2. I have a limited (though not a high-demand one) and a couple gift heads that would be not so fun to replace, but I really don't treat them any different than the others. For me the difference is the faceups. I am more careful with the ones that have faceups I didn't do myself. They still go to meetups and maybe DragonCon, but for non-meetup traveling or going shopping for props I usually prefer to grab one I've painted myself. For meets it's more about where we'll be and what we'll be doing, and if anyone has asked to see a specific one. None of mine have extra-delicate parts or anything, which is helpful. On the Minifees I do make sure to put on the most secure-fitting magnetic hands (or switch them to hook hands) for anything out of the house, though!

    3. Do you take your limited or rare dolls out of your house?

Yup. Usually to meetups, but occasionally just because. My dentist has met most of my boys, and the ladies at the bead store can identify several of them by name. :)

How do you feel about taking limiteds/rares to meets, cons, on outings - basically, out of your house?

No different from hauling any other doll, really. I'm more concerned about my one doll with full-body blushing than the LEs. I just have to be careful, and I know that the locals will be respectful of my dolls. I don't think I'd take a LE to a convention, though. Too much going on, too much potential for accidents. Meetups are more low-key.

Have you had any bad or questionable experiences that have made you wary of taking your limiteds/rares out?

Yup. Asphalt and dolls to not mix. x_x I didn't take him anywhere for a while after that. But eventually the sting faded, and I'm a lot more careful now.

    4. I actually don't have any limiteds, so I can't really answer exactly, but I do have a lovely face-up from Crobidoll on my Milo, and that gives me some idea.

Before I got him, I thought I'd probably keep him safely away from things... in his little box... taking him out only sometimes, and being extremely careful about it. I was worried I'd break off his fingers, or crush his eyelashes, or scratch his face, or so many other things.

Now that he's arrived, though... I sleep with the darn kid every night, and practically squish him every time he's near me. I guess my priorities are different than I thought... and he's quite a bit more hardy than I thought he'd be. I'm still sometimes afraid I'll ruin his beautiful face-up, and he won't be quite the same with a new one... but, what fun is a Milo if you can't squish him??

I'm not sure what I'd do with a OOAK doll, though, or with a truly limited edition... Something signed by my favorite celebrity or something. Heh...

    5. All of my dolls I'll take outside for photoshoots, and probably 3/4 of my collection is made up of limited or rare dolls, and I don't think I treat them that much different to my basic dolls. If a doll has a faceup I consider especially special, they'll usually only go to friend's houses, not to meets where I don't know the people and can't always control the situation. This is the same for my Lotus Near and my conjoined twins - they're too complicated to handle and I don't expect anyone else to know how, so it's not worth the stress.

I'll take my dolls outdoors for shoots - some have had spills, but nothing that's unfixable. I've seen dolls break hands on carpet (and they were falling sideways after sitting on said carpet!), so I take in to account that there's always going to be a risk. Just need fast reflexes!

If I go to cons I usually only take one doll along, or one SD and a couple of tinies I can slip in to my bag. That way I can carry the SD around in my arms with little trouble.

    6. I find this extremely interesting. I wonder what would happen if I took a doll to my parents' church. . . >_> hmm. I might try it.

I do not have any expensive limited dolls, but I have a few that have been discontinued. I am nervous about taking them out. My favourite (in a way. I like all of them, but he gets played with more) doll is my Dollshe Husky, and I would like to take him out. However, at the first meet I attended, one of the FIRST things that happened was someone tried to grab and hug one of my dolls- that was in my arms. I was not at all pleased about it, but I was not terribly upset (thought technically, I just realized my luts Camilla is my only actual LE doll). Had the doll been my Husky, I would have been very upset. I was still considering taking him out after that, but when I mentioned I had a Husky, eyes got big, and I started to imagine hands would probably get grabby if I took him. People probably would not touch him if I said not to, but I don't want to show up to a meet and loudly announce "No one can touch the Husky!" when I get through the door. :sweat Even if I had the cash to replace him, Huskys are hard to find and only ever sell in auctions now.
I also have a Souldoll Lupinus, which was the first doll I fell in love with and the first I bought. The few (perhaps two) times I saw a Lupinus for sale, they were not terribly expensive as it is still an unpopular sculpt (unlike previously unpopular Husky, which seems to have become a highly sought after doll after going out of production); however, they are so rare, I am afraid I would not be able to find a doll to replace mine if something happened.
Recently, Ringdoll Shao went out of production. I think I will still take mine out because I do not think he would attract that much attention, though, I would be more nervous than with my other dolls as I do not really see a way to replace him if something did happen.
The next closest thing I have to a limited is my Heliot hybrid. His body is a resinsoul and would be extremely easy to replace, and I don't think his head would be that difficult to replace either as Heliot heads come up for sale often enough. However, I don't want to have to replace him and don't think I will take him out because I have a feeling he would get more attention than some of my other dolls and falls over very easily (I think he'll break his ears, which would kill me as I adore his ears).

So, in general, I do not take out my dolls I think will be hard to replace or that I think people will be attracted to. I am not sure about other people, but I try not to take my dolls to non-doll functions much, and if I am going to go to a doll meet, I will take a doll I think most people will find boring, so I can manage who wants to hold it.

    7. The doll of mine that gets out the most is actually a limited tan pw goldie. I would probably be slightly more pissed about losing 800 dollars over, say, 500, and also the ever elusive tan skin. But still, all my dolls are just as valuable to me personally as the next, and I think they all deserve to be played with.

I DO HOWEVER keep the limited outfits in the box, lol.

    8. I love this thread!! I took Uzi to Izumicon back in November and nothing bad happened. She's LE and I'm just super over-protective of her and only take her to cons, meetups and back home. Other than that, she's on lockdown because she's rare too. She's my first so taking her out and showing her cute self off is a must, just as long as I play over-protective with her.

    9. Interesting question, I'm actually trying to decide what I'll do.
Currently the only doll that get's trucked around is my basic Puki Sugar. The others have no reason to go out (we have zip meets where I live), while my Puki accompanies me to work and school.
However I'm making a trip to Wisconsin over Christmas and I want to take my MNF Juri '08 with me. I'm a little scared to travel with her since she's an event head and so limited/rare in that way. So I guess I will be traveling with a 'limited/rare' then? I'll be nervous the entire time but I don't think anything will happen to her since she's going to be going through airport security with me.
I wouldn't have an issue taking her to a meet-up, I'd just be careful of her falling and her ears. When my Soom Minette arrives I'll probably take her out as often as I do my other dolls (excluding the traveling-wonder puki).

    10. Do you take your limited or rare dolls out of your house?
I do. I have an Elf Ducan, a Juri event head and a couple Breakaway even heads. I've even dyed a limited doll before and then had i sanded off him. I treat them like all my other dolls, though maybe with a little more favor sometimes, haha XD

How do you feel about taking limiteds/rares to meets, cons, on outings - basically, out of your house?
I have no problem with it. They're meant to be enjoyed and while a great deal of enjoyment does come from sewing and such, another aspect of that is going out of the house and meeting with friends. For me anyway. Everyone is different.

Have you had any bad or questionable experiences that have made you wary of taking your limiteds/rares out?
I took my Elf Ducan to the garden where I work and was posing him on the harbor stones (big pieces of granite) when he face-planted and smashed his nose in! I was devestated, but it won't stop me from taking them out again. It was carelessness that lead ot his falling and could have happened to any doll. I'll just try to be even more careful next time :)

Another time though in a bookstore, I was telling this guy about the dolls and he just reached out and grabbed my boy's face! I told him to stop and why it was bad, but he didn't seem to care very much. I just keep them a lot closer now.

    11. Do you take your limited or rare dolls out of your house?
Yes, mostly for conventions or meet-ups.

How do you feel about taking limiteds/rares to meets, cons, on outings - basically, out of your house?
Perfectly fine. I've taken my Volks Tony when I went for vacation in California/Las Vegas and been completely comfortable with it.

Have you had any bad or questionable experiences that have made you wary of taking your limiteds/rares out?
No, not really. My family found it to be slightly uncomfortable but it didn't interrupt the vacation and nothing happen to my doll, so all was well. At meet-ups, people are actually very happy that I bring my limiteds sometimes, as they've never seen them in person before. It's usually positive.

    12. i take my limited/rare dolls out of my house for photoshoots, but i would have thoroughly planned everything out first, and know that the location is suitable e.g. that no one is going to come up and take/damage/touch my doll ~

meets are fine, but cons no, i wouldn't bring my dolls with me to cons since it's a little too crowded imo ~

    13. I think there was something about treating dolls differently... but maybe it didn't have "limiteds" in the subject?

How do you feel about taking limiteds/rares to meets, cons, on outings - basically, out of your house?
All my dolls are limited (except one tiny) and several are one-offs. I take them all to meets, cons, trips on planes, in cars, etc.

Even if I had a standard--it is still worth hundreds of dollars and it would be bad if it was damaged or whatever!

Just take care of your dolls--even in the house they can fall and break or be stolen or damaged...

Have you had any bad or questionable experiences that have made you wary of taking your limiteds/rares out?
I am aware that I am exposing my dolls to more risks when taking them out. I was just at a meetup and several Soom MDs took a tumble off of a table!!! But we all set up our dolls anyway. I've heard of dolls being stolen. I've seen them fall and have ears and noses chip and fingers break.

Life is a risk--you just assess them and take the risk or not. I choose to enjoy my dolls, which means that I'm not going to keep them safely locked up in a dark room and unexposed to light, heat or humidity--which really, is the safest place (not to mention that the room should be water and fire and flood-proof and safe from theft or earthquakes). People can't live that way, though. And things will never be totally safe--just TIME will eventually be bad for your doll! They will yellow. They will have their elastic and faceup and resin deteriorate...

I wouldn't toss them around or not keep them from direct sunlight, or put them in precarious situations... but they are only dolls--whether One-offs or Limiteds or Standards... but they are ALL Unique for the owner... and they all cost money... Just be reasonably careful and beyond that--you should enjoy your doll and not worry so much that it keeps you from having fun.

    14. I have several Soom MD's and an AS LE Gavin. I take my dolls to cons and meetups. Most of the anime cons I go to I have a table in the Artist Alley. I take several dolls of differing sizes to display my wares. I usually take at least one Soom MD tiny and a Soom MD SD. The only bad thing that has happend is My AS Gavin was standing on my table and decided to faceplant. He broke a finger off one of his hands. The hands are replaceable.

    15. I think I will probably take my limited out but she is not highly sought after and I treat my current non limited like glass so I'm not worried really. I probably will be more careful about where I take her though.

    16. I have two limiteds, a IH Benny and a Volks Ruby. Since they both are tan I only take them out while I'm inside a building. I want to slow down the aging process as much as possible.

I've taken my Volks Ruby several places. I just got my IH Benny a couple months ago and I haven't taken her to a meet yet. But, this Saturday will be the first one. Luckily, the people at the meet are people that I've hung out with before and they're good people so I don't have to worry about sticky fingers. But, that doesn't mean that I would leave them unattended.

    17. Great thread!
I don't have a limited yet (or any, for that matter!) But the dolls I'm pinning for are all SOOM MD tinnies. They'll come out and about with me for pictures and meets ups. I'm sure they'll come to hotels for cons, as well, but I'm not sure about the cons themselves. Probably the smaller ones.

    18. Most of my dolls are LE and some are rather rare. Of them all, there's only one who I am loathe to take outside or anywhere because I am absurdly attached to him and would not be able to replace him or his faceup easily. He doesn't go to meets because I don't like having a lot of people around him or handling him, and he's swaddled in super fine soft fabric and bubble wrap right now inside his box.

This doesn't hinder my enjoyment of him at all, though. He doesn't need to go to meets and I take him out when I want to look at him or photograph him.

    19. I have quite a few limiteds or rare dolls now - a few Event Lishes & Breakaways, a couple of SOOMs - Chalco and Silt, two Alices from Pipos..

Do you take your limited or rare dolls out of your house?
Yep, all the time - depends on where I'm going, but I try to take all of my dolls to meets and stuff, especially if they haven't been taken before or they're new. My Chalco has gone out heaps of times and I like letting people see dolls they haven't seen before. The only reason I don't take some of them to cons and stuff is because some of them are too heavy to carry a lot!

How do you feel about taking limiteds/rares to meets, cons, on outings - basically, out of your house?
No problems with it - I like letting people see dolls they might not have seen before or want to see - there is a fairly large doll community for our city (compared to other cities in Australia), but there are not always lots of people who have the same dolls. So I like to take me dolls so other people can see them - especially those that are limited or rare!

Have you had any bad or questionable experiences that have made you wary of taking your limiteds/rares out? Not yet - my Chalco has badly chipped blushing, but my friend did that and can do it again. I just like to make sure I know where they are and how they are being handled!

    20. Do you take your limited or rare dolls out of your house?
      Sure do!

How do you feel about taking limiteds/rares to meets, cons, on outings - basically, out of your house?
They are all insured, so its a slight bit of worry off my mind, but I cannot say if I honestly would be less mindful of a non-limited doll as all mine are limited (events and limited time things always give me the grabby hands syndrome). I do not think "I have to be careful because he/she is limited", I just am careful because its my doll I would be upset if anything happened to it.

Have you had any bad or questionable experiences that have made you wary of taking your limiteds/rares out?
I had one of my dolls take a faceplant onto stone gravel at the top of a waterfall. Ended up having a bit of a dent in her forehead. I had someone sand the scuff out for me and she is almost as good as new. I did not take her back out for quite some time after that, but I learned never to do a solo photoshoot of a standing doll. Always have a spotter!
