Do you Talk to your Dolls or Do you not Talk to your dolls?

Mar 28, 2013

    1. I talk to just about anything really. Mainly if it's my dolls I will greet them sometimes, or when I pick them up I'll say something, and I tell them to behave a lot. I also talk to my pets, they're easier to talk to because they're not inanimate objects... and I talk to stuff if I drop it, like telling stuff off for obeying gravity. It's fun, but I know it won't talk back.

    2. If I am frustrated at an object, say my computer, or if my doll isn't cooperating I would be like "Please work!" or "Internet, why are you takkinngg foreverrr tooo looaaddddd D:<" But conversations, and general talking? No, I don't. (:

    3. I definitely talk to my dolls...and I don't think anyone should ever feel bad for doing so! I mean, I talk to my electronics (though that's more joking - "Oh **** it, laptop, behave yourself!").

Dolls, especially BJDs, seem to really have character and personalities. For me, it really depends on how much I connect with the doll, at all. Right now the only one I really have a bond with is my AoD punk girl - the other two are hopefully going to find new homes - so I don't talk much to the others, but I talk to Hunter all the time. I finished her faceup yesterday (after spending a whole weekend trying to get it right) and I was saying things like "You look so pretty! Oh, no, how did you lose your lip ring?! Hang on, I'll get you a new one..."

I don't think there's anything wrong with it at all. The only time I'd think it was a problem would be if someone really felt that their dolls were literally hearing them and answering, or if they started to literally hear answers from the doll; I'd think that would point to a possible mental health issue.

But as with all creative things, there's a fine line. I think we've all had moments when we felt that our dolls were "giving us an attitude" (like when Hunter keels over at random when I'm working on her) or when we could really clearly imagine what they'd say. I don't think there's anything wrong with it.

    4. I wouldn't talk to my dolls, just seems a little strange to me.

    5. I do talk to my doll. But in public I´m bit cautious. Then I will talk to my doll in telepatically. : ) When I´m with my closer friends I talk more openly and express what my doll is thinking.

    6. I don't have conversations with my dolls, but I have been know to mutter under my breath gems such as "move your arm!" or "Turn your head around properly!" etc. when I am dressing/wigging them *cringe*!

    7. I do. I'm a doll-talker. And not just mine, I've talked to my sister's dolls before (and now that my brother has one, I'll probably talk to her, too)-- and tonight I had Vince with me and she said goodnight to him, which was cute.

I have a family who has always talked to and for everything. Animals, inanimate objects (even ones without a face sometimes)... it's just never seemed abnormal to me to talk to stuff, or to give said stuff a voice back.

    8. Not only do I talk to them, I... erm...well, I'm a little crazy, I guess you could say. I'm strange and I have slightly messed up brain chemistry. So... I get vibes. From inanimate objects, like dolls. Especially dolls, because they look so much like flesh and blood people. So I can talk to them, or interact with them in almost any way, and I'll get a response from them via vibes. Like if I say "Hello, how are you today?" when I open my doll closet, I might feel as though one is responding to me by 'saying' "You've left me in this closet for weeks, how do you think I feel?" And I'd say, either out loud or in my mind, "Look, I'm sorry, come out with me will you?" and pick it up, and then I'd get a feeling like they were maybe a little indignant about it, but also pleased I WAS taking them out... It's weird, and I understand why people would think I'm a little bit more than just a BIT crazy because of it. I don't actually think THE DOLL ITSELF is actually telepathically TALKING to me, but it's more like I've given the doll a character in my mind, so when I look at that doll, the 'soul' of the character comes to life in my brain and kinda... projects(?) itself onto the physical doll, so because it's actually all in my mind, the character can 'hear' what I'm saying, and I can 'hear' their response. (I suppose because they're only my character, in my brain, that I'm the one responding to myself, just pretending it's the character, but I don't think about the response at all, if just comes to me as though the character is thinking it themselves. I don't know how to make this sound less.... insane... OTL )Technically, I'm having a conversation with an imaginary person, but it FEELS like I'm having a conversation with the doll because I so strongly associate the character with the physical doll.

TLDR; Yes, I talk to my dolls.

    9. Um sort of - but in the way you do when swearing at an inanimate object like a malfunctioning computer! That and apologising when they're v.occasionally mistreated...

    10. I never talk to my dolls. It isn't intentional, I guess it's just something I simply don't do and props to those who do, I wish I naturally wanted to talk to my dolls. >.< Even as a child, talking to my dolls or other toys is something I never did.

    11. I talk to my dolls. I talk to my cats. I swear at my computer/TV/sewing machine/etc. I talk to PICTURES. I talk to myself (smartest person in the room LOL LOL)
So. I DO talk to the dolls as if I'm talking to my characters they are shelling - because (see above) I talk to myself about the characters in stories I write - so its an added bonus if said characters seem to be sitting right next to me.

    12. Hmmm, well I only talk directly to my doll if I put them down somewhere and tell them "stay". Or if I come home to find they've fallen over, I'll ask them why they felt the need to jump out of their seat. But I generally don't talk to them more than that. And I certainly don't make a voice and talk as tjough the doll is talking.

That said, however, I do sometimes say things through them in the third person. Like, "Oh, I tried naming her something else, but she was having none of it. She said her name is Lydia." Or the other day I was discussing with my husband how my oldest girl, Ayano feels. She was based most heavily on my own personality, but she has differences. Like, I prefer blacks and reds, but Ayano prefers muted or earth colors. I actually hate brown, but she wears it because she says she likes it. She tells me what kinds of outfits she'd pick, which usually end up as a style I'd wear, but in a color I wouldn't. At which point my husband thinks I'm crazy that the doll is talking to me. :sweat But I tell him I'm not crazy since I know she doesn't really talk to me, I'm just protecting and picking things that suit her coloration. I also talk for my cats, based on the looks they give you. (She says you're squishing her.)

    13. I talk to my dolls all the time, especially when I'm trying to change their clothes or pose them in a new way. It feels much better talking through frustrating moments when the body just isn't cooperating!

    14. Yes, but then I talk to soft toys as well. :P It's mostly in the realm of apologizing if I tip them over or saying something to them out of frustration, but I've never gotten to the point where I have a full blown conversation with them.

    15. Ah I was raised that way too in a way. I get a lot of flack for playing with my Sephiroth action figures, but I don't care. So yeah! Talk to your dolls! There is nothing wrong with it. :)

    16. I haven't been around my AR Little Fair Cien long enough yet to notice whether or not I talk *to* her directly, but I did find myself lowering my voice a couple of days ago - almost whispering - when I was mentioning a feature of hers I didn't like to another collector, and I was holding the BJD in my hands. Huh. I mean... I don't think she could hear me.... right? ;)
      *peeks over shoulder*

    17. I talk to mine, especially when she's not cooperating >.<

    18. I talk to other people, I talk to animals, I talk to myself and ...yes, I sometimes talk to my dolls :)

    19. I don't talk to my dolls, but I do talk to myself while trying to get them all set up haha! "Crap the eyes are crooked!" "AAh! The hand won't go through the sleeve!" Stuff like that. I do talk to my pets though. I guess it's because they give me a response and my dolls don't.

    20. I'm another one of the "I talk to animals, toys, dolls, electronics" things. I think it comes from being an only child and not having a lot of kids my own age in the neighborhood. I also talk to books, paperclips, photographs, the wall... Thinking out loud has gotten me past a lot of writer's blocks. I try not to do it at work -- or at least keep it so low that my coworkers don't hear me, but I know there've been times when I've said something too loud. Fortunately I work in an IT department and we're all a bit mad.
