Do you think your doll has a soul?

Aug 1, 2011

    1. I love the different terminology talking about the same thing. Inanimate objects seem to collect energy from being consciously created, used, decorated, modified, played with, loved. The more human-like or animistic, the easier this energy is generated. Sometimes they just collect the energy of their surroundings. Call it a soul, projections in your head (always my personal fav head shaker), whatever....
Not everybody perceives these things for whatever reason. But we are getting to a point scientifically where these quantum phenomena are going to be measurable.
Then I guess the #$ will hit the proverbial fan....
I liked the Coyote story - understand completely.
      :D

    2. I would say no. Souls are not man-made, the dolls are.
While it's fun to believe/pretend they are alive with souls, personalities, emotions, etc. It really is not something you should dwell on too much. My mom often asks "You do know they're not real, right?" Because of the attachement, time, and money I put in to them as if they're real. If you truly believe it has a soul, you may be pushing the hobby to an new extreme (and it's probably not good for your mental health o.O; )

    3. Nope. I don't have a soul, and neither do my dolls. Now, as I've said before, should the Mother SD smite me for my blasphemy I'll have to seriously rethink my entire world view. But until then I firmly believe that the concept of "soul" is a construct of the human imagination.

    4. Everything you can imagine is real? or so said the fabulous artist Pablo Picasso.

No, they have no souls. Everything that it is created by man has no soul(life). But we can use our imaginations =D

    5. I don't know if I believe that humans have a soul, let alone anything else, but I can't make myself think of her as just a hunk of plastic. I talk to her, and I can't stand to not have her positioned comfortably. I treat her like she's alive, so I guess in a kind of way, I think she might have one.

    6. I do not know whether the soul of dolls, but it is certain that they are not just a piece of plastic! And sometimes I like to think that my dolls can empathize, to love to hate, and just feel.
I'm not animated dolls. Rather animated, but within reason. I say that Mugu Kalendulae likes to read books, but this does not mean that I would bring her apples for breakfast, because she "loves to eat them."

    7. No souls here. :) [And half of these guys would've already sold'em off anyway. :sweat] But they all have very strong personalities and energies of their own, and I'm content with that.

    8. No souls in my dolls. :>

I certainly project personalities onto my dolls when I'm playing with them or posing them, and I am quite affectionate and sentimental about them, but I do know that they are non-living objects.
People, animals, plants have souls... objects do not.

I'd be on the phone arranging an exorcism! LOL! XD

    9. I don't think dolls have souls. I feel that my dolls are extensions of my creativity, and I might think that they have souls at times because they're really reflecting my own tastes.

    10. No, I don't believe dolls have souls.

I definitely do think dolls and characters can take on a life of their own in a manner of speaking, but I believe that happens by the power of imagination, not by anything more mystical.

    11. There's a fine line between dolls having human characteristics, and souls aren't on the side of the dolls- they have a character, they have a backstory, to be specific, all the work and effort you've put into your doll, it has a part of your soul.

They're all special in their own way though.

    12. A soul – in certain spiritual, philosophical, and psychological traditions – is the incorporeal essence of a person or living thing or object.
This is wikis definition. The thought of a soul is a belief. It is not something that can be seen so anything can have a soul if you believe in it, even dolls. I am not religious so I do not believe in souls but that does not mean others dont or cant. Believe what ever makes you happy just dont go nuts to prove it.

    13. I don't know if I think dolls have a soul the same way humans do.... But I think they have an 'essence' or a 'being' to them.... I agree with whoever it was who said that it's the owner's love and energy that gives them a 'self'. Talking about souls with inanimate objects is always a sketchy subject, especially when said inanimate objects look so much like people. I don't think it's good for a person to go too far in 'humanizing' their possessions, because that could end up being psychologically damaging to an extent; however, if your doll has no personality or 'life' of its own, I would think the hobby would end up feeling a bit boring for all the money that goes into it.

    14. No. The concept of a doll having a soul confuses and infuriates me.

    15. I just saw "The Doll Master" (it was a free gift from Emory @ The Junky Spot with a doll order), and I really don't think I would want a doll with that kind of a soul. (It IS a horror film, after all!)

After seeing the film, I played with some Photoshop filters and came up with "The Demon Child":

    16. no.
to me, only living things can have a soul. dolls are man-made with not very natural products... (pretty sure they are not made with natural resin anymore)

    17. Not exactly. I mean, they definitely have their own personalities and beliefs, and so far they've all pretty much created themselves as characters(half of them didn't turn out exactly as I expected them to be), and they are pretty life-like compared to other dolls I've owned, but I don't really think they have an actual SOUL. That's just me though. And yet I flip the f--- out if a doll of any kind moves or makes noise by itself(heh, pediophobia's so fun). :sweat

    18. I think if you love your dolls, then in a sense, they do have souls. Once the people who love them no longer exist in this world, then their souls will also vanished into time.

    19. The doll is a doll. It is an image of a person but not a person. And it has it's own charm. The soul is visible to the owner of a doll. It's like you give a little part of your soul to the doll.

    20. I do not believe in souls in regards to inanimate objects.
