Do your doll's eyes have to fit perfectly in their sockets? Do gaps bother you?

Mar 3, 2014

    1. Eye's fitting perfectly is very important to me. Any gap will drive me insane! That being said, several people said they used a "beveller" to correct the eye wells. What is a "beveller"? I have a few dolls with poor eye wells I would love to fix!

    2. A beveler is a tool used to smooth out a spherical area. It looks like a ball on a stick. The ball is gritty, allowing you to sand and smooth a spherical area. You select a size that matches the size of eyes you will be using.

Here's a link to one from Dollmore, so you can see an example: 16mm Eye Beveler

They're sold by some doll companies and a lot of doll making tool shops.

    3. It doesn't bother me too much. I recently bought a pair of eyes that left a bit of a gap, but the color was too perfect to pass up. I just super-puttied it in and they look really good to me now. I'm not even picky about the color of putty either.

I'm not very picky about eye types either. I have two dolls that were secondhand and I have no clue what their eyes are made from, two with glass, one other with acrylic, and one that has a steampunk eye of an unknown material.

    4. Yes. I don't like gaps. They weird me out.

    5. I bought high dome eyes for my first doll and he has smaller sockets which probably helped to cause the gaps in the sides. I'm new to the hobby so I guess I'll try low domes sometime!

    6. i'm a fan of silicon soft glass eyes cause their ability to mold to the sockets, it works for all the small eyed girls i have. i also enjoy the glow and realism they have

    7. Depends on the expression...sometimes I like gaps, sometimes I like it close fitted..

    8. Silicone eyes all the way!! I absolutely HATE gaps with glass/acrylic. They are just so creepy!

    9. Gaps bother me very much! I've switched to silicone too.

    10. I use clear silicon ear plugs as eye putty, so even though the eyes may be very slightly gappy, unless you look close, you don't really notice it much. I'd rather have the perfect glass eyes that I want than perfect-fitting silicon eyes that will yellow, not be the color I want and need to be replaced later on.

    11. I REALLY hate gaps with eyes. I don't know why, but when I see pictures of other peoples dolls with eye gaps, it actually freaks me out a little bit. I don't know why, maybe it's because the eye looks more like it's coming out than if it does with no gaps? But yeah, I really don't like eye gaps much at all. ><

    12. Yeah, gaps are bad. I spot them in photos and it bothers me. I am actually always on the lookout for larger low dome eyes! Why so many high domes??? I am having trouble with my Leeke Florence head currently. I don't have any 20mm for her and HAD to use 18mm and I'm unhappy! OK, I did have one pair of 20mm but they were high dome Soom silicon and they didn't fit AT ALL.

    13. This is one thing I find really frustrating. I can't stand gaps. And I want each eye's position to perfectly match its mate's. Seems I'm always staring at a doll, worrying "OK, is the left eye pointed just a little more to the right than the left eye?" or something like that.

    14. How particular are you about your dolls eyes?
Very. I had the worst problems with my first doll and also with a doll with half open eyes. Normally with my dolls glass or acrylic eyes are ok, but with those two it just didn't work.
Does, for instance, a small gap around the edge bother you?
That was very much the problem with those two. Normal glass eyes for example would just not fit correctly.
Do you prefer a certain kind of eye, such as soft glass for the way they adapt to the doll's eyesocket?
For those two I use silicone eyes. I normally prefer glass eyes, though.

    15. I want all of my doll's eyes to fit perfect but that's not always an option. I usually consider gappy eyes temporary until I find a perfect pair.

    16. If the gap is really small I don't think I would mind so much, but the eye putty has to not make them look weird (my current eye putty is blue :sweat) so I usually just deal with my doll's eyes being in a wrong position, since seeing the eye putty on my doll annoys me. It doesn't bother me with other people's dolls in photographs and stuff though :)

    17. I don't mind the gaps as long as they're not huge, or as long as the putty isn't showing. I never seem to notice that little bit of putty exposed until I take a photo from a certain angle. xP

    18. Yes for me it has to fit perfectly. The eyes is one of the main reasons why I'm so fascinated with these dolls.
When you look in their eyes they look so realistic.

    19. It's pretty important to me that there are no gaps in the sockets. I can't stand it and the eyes just look off to me.

    20. Oh, no! No gaps please. I gave my Iple-EID 14 mm Dollshe eyes instead of 12 mm for this exact reason. Great fit and amazing eyes. My best so far.
