Do your dolls interact? What are their relationships like?

Jun 6, 2022

    1. I have my first doll coming some time in the next 3 months, and I've been thinking about whether I'll buy a friend for her someday, or if I'll buy another doll to be another character and my first doll will naturally develop a relationship with the new one. I don't plan on it for at least a little while, but it's still interesting to think about.

I actually dreamt that I had a boy and a girl, grown up Jun and Hinaichigo from Rozen Maiden and their relationship was very sweet. They were bonding over music and dancing together.

So, I'd like to ask whether your dolls have any interactions? Do you just take multiple out for photos or do you play with them together?

    2. Some of my dolls are couples, some are families, some are friends at school. I have taken one couple in particular on photoshoots for photostories.

    3. That's what happened with my second doll, he was bought as a friend for my first because I didn't want him to be lonely lol, plus I had already created the friend's character on paper so was basically just shelling an OC at that point. Howeverrrr the rest of my dolls so far don't really interact. Well I guess sometimes I'll take photos of them together, but they're not like in each others stories if you know what I mean. I think the main reason for that though is just cause the rest of my dolls are different sizes and look a little funny next to each other. I do have friends/partners planed out for a couple of them, like backstory and art and stuff, I just haven't shelled them yet.

    4. For now don't have all full dolls but they have some varied relationships. My character Maya has a boyfriend whose doll I do not own yet xD and all my girl dollies are friends. :XD:

    5. The only relationship that's happened with my current dolls is my Realfee, a little goblin character, is an apprentice to my Feeple60 cottage witch character. I'm hoping to have a relationship made with my witch and a doll I'm going to be buying from a friend though! I also have plans to make The Little Prince and the Fox out of a doll I have and one I have on order. And I've been hemming and hawing about when I should order the partner to another one of my dolls. The one I have is a Court Wizard and the one I want to get will be the Princess.

One of my dolls, another Feeple60, seems to want to interact with my witch but I don't know how to get it to work in a story. She's a cottage witch and he's (at the moment at least) a modern reincarnation of Icarus. His character could change though, he's still in the early stages, if you will.

    6. Not originally, but one time when I was cleaning and moved my two dolls to sit together, I noticed I had somehow acquired Little Red and the Big Bad Wolf. My girl is a 1/4 and the boy is a 1/3 werewolf, it happened totally by accident. They aren't any version of the fairytale but because I know the tale well it seems natural for them to have a connection. She's a witchy type of some kind (haven't settled on what yet) and he's her guardian

    7. After so many years in the hobby, I’m fortunate enough to have amassed a fairly substantial collection…and all of my very diverse crew interact with others in some way or another. From the very beginning I collected around a central fantasy theme, which enabled me to bring home whatever size from whatever company without having to match anything up for story purposes. But I created displays for them throughout my home, grouping them creatively here and there, where their stories could intersect in a natural way. Somehow it always worked out that they had others to be their friends, siblings, children, pets, etc. They interact in various groupings through my arranging them and imagining the dynamics of what’s going on between them.:)

    8. So far my dolls don't interact, mostly because their personalities are half developed. I do have two dolls incoming very soon, who will be best friends? Maybe lovers? Depends on how they scale next to each other. I struggle to photograph one doll, I can't wait to see how much I struggle with more. :kitty1

    9. They don't all interact... but Pete and Billy interact with each other and most pictures I have of them are together. Marigold and Party Martian I've photographed together, but they don't really have a character relationship.

Jack and Deanna are intended to interact, their relationship is co-adventurers in my little D&D world. But since I don't have sets, I haven't had many chances to take photos of them together.

And I've joked that my one 1/3 scale head is their god... but he definitely isn't meant to interact with the rest.

    10. Oh yes, my dolls interact; click on the link in my signature to see my BJD stories website. :3nodding:

Lack of interaction and inspiration has resulted in the sale of a few dolls over the years. It wasn't any strong feeling or revulsion; they just seemed to be aloof from the rest, so it became my little personal rule to move on dolls who do that.

    11. When I first started, my first few dolls, except one, were all from the same company, so I imagined them being members of the same family and plotted out simple little backstories for them. Then as I got more dolls from other companies and of other scales, I thought of ways to link them to my main family of dolls.

However, after a few years and as I acquired more and more dolls from various companies, I just stopped trying to link them together... :sweat

Now, most of my dolls aren't related as most of them are kind of 'display dolls' that I got because I like the way they look. The rest are ones that I got to be shells of particular characters and some of them are related to the same storyline, so those interact with each other all the time.

    12. One personal rule I have is that all of my dolls have to be based on pre-existing OCs. That way it prevents me from impulse buying (for the most part…) So yes, all of my dolls I currently own are part of the same “storyline” and they all have characters they represent. It’s satisfying watching your characters from the same story come together in reality (as much as possible, anyways haha.) It also helps me bond with the dolls much better than buying first, then making a character for it.

    13. Most of my dolls characters connect in some way. Like others, I have couples and friends but I've also gotten extended families at this point. Some of my 1/6 are cousins with their parents also shelled. I roleplay with most of my characters too though so even when I get a doll that has no specific character tied to it, very often they end up intertwined with my other dolls somehow.

Probably my most "obscure" relationships are two of my 1/6 were raised as very close in age siblings but one is adopted. In my stories they both end up as a couple when adults. To make it a bit more complex, her mom and his dad were very close as kids and consider/call each other siblings even though there's no blood relation. So these two 1/6 are both non-blood cousins, adopted siblings, and future lovers all in one.

I aslo just mostly display my dolls by size at this point. So all my 1/3 hang out on a doll couch or my headboard even though not all of them are from the same stories or even know each other in character. Just easier to keep the size groups together. Especially when you've at over 30 dolls.

    14. I keep all of mine displayed together, but it's a bit awkward cause we got:

The same guy at ages 12 and 28. His 10 year old daughter, in both human and wolf (off topic art doll) forms. Her mother, at age 10. And 2 unrelated kids from a video game (currently headless).

    15. Some of my dolls interact with others. They are sisters or friends or couple. But not all my dolls. Sometimes it's just for pictures. I have so many dolls and they come from different stories. I like to shell some of my characters from RPG paper or stories I write.

But there is one doll who is aware of all these worlds and is like a link between all of that. ;) Eïr'el is my doll that conect all my worlds together, she is (quite) in every story. ^^

    16. I do this too! Started as one doll as the link but currently I have one of each size that is a link between my few worlds. I call them my planeswalkers and they're my favorite dolls.

    17. I think to me, dolls that come from the same company automatically are 'family' or have some relation to each other (I'm waiting for a switch sculpt to drop, and I already have another switch boy with me at home - they're already brothers in my mind). the rest though, are individuals that do not interact :3nodding:

    18. The characters that my dolls are shelled as mostly interact in a shared everything-and-the-kitchen-sink style multiverse. Kind of like the works of the manga studio Clamp.
I like being able to change my existing doll's characters so no one doll is forever locked into one role.

There are dorm mates, instructors, friends, family, neighbors and even a couple characters that were opponents and are now friends.

    19. I usually try so all my dolls have well-stablished relationships between them. Right now, I have kind of two universes (one for the anthro dolls and another for the human-like dolls) that don't mix with each other.
The anthro dolls are a kind of a disfunctional family of creatures that got lost and ended up in our universe and they try to make sense of why they were send here by their respective deities. They're aware they are tiny and all.
The human-like dolls are currently under revision, but they're a couple and a little girl that I haven't figured out how to fit if I ever fit her at all with the couple. One of the dolls in the couple may be aware of the anthro dolls, though.
This idea sounds lovely! It may be the perfect role for the little girl I can't seem to fit anywhere right now. I'll have to give it a spin for it to make sense within the lore of it, but it's worth a try.

    20. Most of my SD size dolls (and a few of the smaller ones) are members of the same large Victorian Edwardian family of siblings, half-siblings, and cousins. So they interact, some more than others (two of them squabble a lot with third acting as the pecemaker between them, for example), but one of them is best friends with one of my 1920s/30s girls when they're not actually within their their back story (i.e. when they're sat on the shelves in my livingroom).

My other sizes are mostly gorouped by size but there's lots of overlapping and interactions between them.

Some of my dolls also have friends among dolls belonging to other people.
