1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

    1. lool - I don't do youtube ... if I watch too many my computer crashes. I mean I know the basics (the no oil based stuff and all that) but is there anywhere with a comprehensive list of safe materials/brands? I mean there's got to be some kind of pen-based stuff that's safe ... you can get acrylic and water based paint pens and all that kind of stuff so one of them's got to be ok. (and if there's not a list maybe the forum community should think about starting one - I mean I'm sure it would be really useful info to have)
I have read through a bunch on the customization thread but it all really boils down to the same info - don't use oil-based, use pasels, watercolours and acrylics, etc ... but there doesn't seem to be anything else (other than don't use sharpies but *sorry* wow that's so obvious ) - other than techniques anyway.
I did a search but all the info I got back was people asking about faceup materials and merely mentioning pens/markers and the replies were the usual (same as above kind of thing) ... wish I could remember the brand names of the acrylic paint pens I used to have :doh .... so annoying when your brain fails you on things like that
Do you guys know if anyone has ever tried filling a pen/marker with thinned acrylics/watercolours (I'm loathe to go near the acrylics again for faceups since the last dire attempt lol)? I tried searching that but it was too much info for the search function but when I cut it down was when I ended up with the aforementioned results.
The only other thing I could thing of was trying to fashion some kind of 'face/head extension' apparatus (starting to sound like a mad scientist ;)) that would give me the extra area I need to steady my hand for my tried and tested way for fine lines.

    2. Don't know of any acrylic pen. All the ones I know about are solvent based.

Try resting your pinkie/edge of your hand on the edge of the table and holding the head up to where you have the brush...

    3. If you go to a larger eye size, the iris might fill up the eye completely. Try angling the eyeballs upward a bit so the pupil is slightly under the upper eyelid. She does have pretty round eyes, though.... maybe surprised is her look? My Shushu looks worried most of the time herself.

I flinched as I read that; heard that slap from here!

Have you tried water color pencils yet? They tend to look a little grainy, but I might give you a little more control and you can go over them with a damp brush and smooth the color out. Face-ups are like anything else: the more you practice, the better they (usually) get. And sometimes it takes a bit to figure out just what mediums work best for you.

    4. tried that - but because of the shape of the eye crease it didn't work very well ... the cheek and chin parts of the head hit the edge of the table as I moved the head to follow the curve and when I moved it out a bit it was too far away to 'start' the line - I could only get it from about mid-way ... maybe if I had something shaped (like an extension bit on the table) so that the head could move without hitting the edge while still giving me enough area to lean my hand - I'll have to ask my dad if maybe he can do something with a jigsaw, like modified a cheap wooden stool (I'm happy to sit on the floor to work )

Yeah I used to have a few, they were acrylic paint filled fibre tipped pens with these ultra-fine nibs - high end art supplies if I recall ... I got them in an art supply warehouse I went to when I was in school (16yrs ago lol), they were a new product back then but maybe they didn't sell as well as the creators hoped so they discontinued them or something as I haven't seen them since (not that I get to go to art suply warhouses very often these days ).

I might fill an empty copic shell with some watercolour paint just to see what the flow is like ... that's what I was wondering mainly - if anyone else had ever tried it - since it might not flow properly from the nib, which would make it useless but if it did flow fine then maybe, as it would just be watercolour - no solvents or anything like that ... but I have no ultra-fine copic nibs so I can't tell if they're metal (which would rule the whole idea out) or fibre

Cymorill - actually if you look close you can see their eyebrows and lower lashes are done in watercolour pencils ;) (god I love my derwents ) but even sharpened to a fine point they couldn't reach into the eye crease ... if you look closely at Aaron especially, the eye crease is preety deep and defined - it left a second line on the ridge part (on Ralphy too - I didn't try on Serena).

    5. That is awesome !! When will they hit the MP?

    6. FrozenRose- You could use a darker blush in the eye creases and the "wipe" the excess with a kneaded rubber eraser. I use a very flat brush to work a dark blush into the creases of the eyes and lips on mine and sometimes don't even need a painted crease line.

    7. I think I'll just have to not order any more blank dolls and just practice on my floating head army - I mean I totally get needing practice and all its just frustrating on a doll you've been waiting months for, spent a fortune on and really want to play with but you can't because their head is sitting on the work table waiting for their 4th faceup (not even counting the wipe-offs, only the sealed-crapped up-spent-forever-scrubbing-off ones) ... think I'll just give up for a bit - I need better pastels, mine are *excuse the language* absolute sh*t (they just don't stay even with all the tips you guys gave me before about the brushes) but apparently to get better ones will set me back about ยฃ90+ (I think i posted before about how much they were per set and that to get a reasonable range I needed at the very least 3 sets). I'm hoping I might be able to get down to the art supply warehouse in October - maybe they'll have some good pastels a bit more reasonable, I should think they'll even have them individually which would be even better :) Plus I think I will get my dad to modify a stool - I think ikea has cheap ones that would work :sweat
Kind of gutted about not ordering any blank as I really wanted a DiM Gayane but I don't like DiM faceups :(
Just glad my souldolls and luts had free faceups in the events

kolombe - thank you :D It was well worth the cramped up hand I got knotting the sewing thread

    8. FR: I kinda understand where you're coming from, but I'd rather play with a blank doll than pay for a faceup I don't want. And Pan Pastels absolutely rule...just sayin'!

    9. I guess faceup artists are going to have to be budgeted in on future purchases lol ;)
I've never heard of that brand but I plan on writing down all suggestions of good pastels for faceups between now and october so I'm prepared when I hit the supplier ... so suggest away folks

I'm kind of gutted - I've been stalking my email for a shipping notice for my luts event order ... I needs a dolly to arrive with a face  (plus it has Ralphy's wig and Serena's clothes) and I know my souldoll order will be lucky if it arrives before christmas ;) someone in the waiting room said about 7 months - I nearly had a heart attack, then I very nearly went back and ordered another few figuring if I have to wait that long for them I may as well take full advantage of free faceups hehehe :)

oh yeah - how do i measure eyes? I've fallen hard for some ersa flora burst ones for Aaron but I don't know what size to order (he's a DZ MSD if anyone knows what size for them off-hand) and I like the size he has in at the moment :)

    10. Eye size for DZ MSD, depends a bit on taste and eye shape, I like 12mms and they usually come with 14mms I think.

    11. I finally got my bird family together <3 unfortunately due to poor planning and now lack of job my poor yrie will be wigless.

    12. Is Yrie the one in front who looks like he's happily waving at the camera? *melts from cuteness*

Is there anything you can think of to do that'd help you earn a bit of money to get him a wig? What color would it be? *is more curious than anything, sorry* Still, they do look like they enjoy being together ... maybe that's more important than whether one has a wig or not.

    13. He's very cute. How big is he? Is that the YoSD-ish size? What about a fur wig? Those are easy to make. PM me if you want me to mail you a scrap of black faux fur; I have soooooooo much. :)

    14. Lintila, I totally love your birdy family!

    15. Squeedorable is now a part of my vocabulary!!!!!! Y'all know how much I love my 3D printed stuff, right?

I talked Kikichan-78 into rescaling some SD scale fencing foils for a Black Butler cosplay down to 1:5 scale for ME!!!! Well, actually, it's for Horndog and Jack...

    16. Thank you everyone <3

Yes, Yrie is the one right in the front ^^ shes surprisingly more sassy then I thought she would be.

@Kamehane Im still not sure what her wig color will be yet Siren and Merridwin both surprised me with their choices by stealing wigs from other dolls lol.

Yes ^^ YOSD sized and wow I really really appreciate the offer. I will let you know o.o wow, thank you.

The one in the back is a Galena <3 and the one in the middle is a Dune that I received last week and really adore more then I thought I would considering I passed her up the first time and I named her Merridwin. Not sure what Yries name will be but I want to do a sort of Triple theme with them like Russian Zorya of morning day and night or something like that.

    17. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAACKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK!!!! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO!

Copics WILL permanently STAIN the resin right through MSC, the dye WILL migrate and spread and some people have had copic ink EAT and soften the resin!

Edit: there is ONE SINGLE pen that Volks USA sells that is safe to use on dolls and it only comes in black. Otherwise: if it is a PEN of ANY SORT it is NOT SAFE.

    18. That.... is... epic!! And I love that Horndog is appropriately attired for battle -- with a back-up sword within easy reach! "Oh, happy dagger!" ;) Poor Jack, caught without his chainmail, too! He looks quite shocked.

    19. Chainmail would do Jack no good at all. Foils, epees and sabers were designed to slip through/between the rings. His goose is cooked no matter what.

    20. And since his reach is shorter he generally has to be faster and craftier than Horndog. Well, it works for him SOME of the time!

Yeah, Horndog thought he might need to put on some clothes for this one...
