1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

Does any doll you buy have to fit a story?

Sep 12, 2010

    1. not at all
I bought my girl because I love her face, she didn't even have a name (and much less a personality or backstory) until a few weeks after she arrived
the dolls on my wishlist are the same, they're there because I love the way they look (maybe someday they'll get a backstory but that's not so important to me)

    2. Mine don't. Once I own then, they develop a story by themselves over time. :)

    3. Not really - only one (well, two, kinda) of my dolls actually has a fully fleshed out story, and so I'm waiting to get the other character of that story, so he will be bought specifically for the story, but most of my other dolls arrive and their characters just flesh themselves out while I'm waiting for them, or once they come home - one pukifee I bought was meant to be a sweet, quiet little girl, and ended up being a boisterous, messy, overly enthusiastic little girl XD

    4. All the dolls I own I bought because I thought they were beautiful, I wanted to draw them, or I wanted to paint the dolls themselves. I give them names because I usually dislike the company's default labels, but those change over time as I get a better impression of each doll's "character." I change out wigs and eyes all the time, so not even their appearances are fixed. When I pose them together, I come up with backstories based on their relationships with each other, but they're fluid too.

    5. I originally thought yes.....however that has changed drastically. I have a few dolls on my list that I adore but don't really have a set story or "purpose".

    6. I would definitely buy a doll and make it's personality afterwards. I don't feel like giving dolls a huuuuge background story, just something basic so any other doll will 'fit in' with it.

    7. Since I am interested in being able to take pictures of my dolls together, I would definitely like them to either fit a backstory (although some dolls can be VERY minor characters within that backstory, filling out spaces at a party or something, they still have to fit) or be glaringly obvious in their not fittingness, so that the characters that do fit can be startled by the strange obviously not fitting character. If they didn't have a backstory, they wouldn't fit together, and that would interfere with taking pictures of the characters interacting.

    8. Actually I wish I had a story where all my dolls could fit in. Unfortunately each of them have a short profile at best. And most of them live in different worlds. I hope that will change one day. I like creating stories.

    9. Not so far, but I think that would be fun -- Looking for a face and body to fit a certain being living in my imagination, so I could share it with others. And "create a life"...

    10. Nope. Avalon's just...There. My next girl is going to be a shadow dancer who gets her energy from violin music.

    11. Initially, yes. All my dolls were bought to fill character roles in an original story world of mine. That started changing when LittleFees were announced. I had no way to fit one into the doll family, but they were so cute! It took me a bit to rationalize one, fitting him into the role of a character that didn't quite match with the rest of the family, but would work anyway. And from there, somehow the fantasy dolls that fit even less than he did worked their own ways in, too. (And somewhere a fan-doll also snuck in.) Still, for the most part, my future plans are aligning back into the existing characters, and I love looking for molds that fit them. :)

    12. A lot of the time, I buy first and figure out who they are once they get here.

When I pre-plan for them, they often decide they are someone other than who I wanted them to be...

    13. Nah. I have some pre-established LE characters from existing story universes, but it's not necessary to fit in with that theme or any particular other theme. If I like the way the doll looks then I'll adopt her.

    14. No, I buy a doll because I like the sculpt, because it stands out to me in a certain way. I might have an idea of what I want them to look like, but not really. I'm new to this hobby, so I'm still experimenting. I've had my doll for only a little while, so maybe she will come into her own character little by little.

    15. Personally, I treat them as a family, so they're free to develop their own character. There are a few that are characters from anime, so, those do have some personality ingrained (at least, I see it that way) in them.

    16. I don't care much about characters, before or after buying a doll...
I will buy a doll (always a female one) because I like her sculpt. It is all that matters ^^

    17. I have never bought a doll to fit an existing character - partly because none of my characters would come out well in doll form, but mainly because I've never had the urge to get them out in physical form. I'm a writer, so I prefer to write my characters or keep them in my head. All my dolls have been bought because I've liked the sculpt and it was actually only last month that they started becoming characters for real - and it just so happened that they all are connected! For me, it is more like writing a story than making characters. There's a set of characters in my head now that happen to have faces because of the dolls I own and I'm now working on outfitting them right. It's a different kind of creative approach to me. :)

    18. I'm definitely the one who buys dolls to fit characters. I didn't start out this way, but I ended up not bonding with anything other than my characters from my story.
I do have an exception to the rule. Jess was created because I wanted a doll I could fit into the "world" I created with my best friend, when we started the hobby.
I don't know if I'll buy more to this "world", but I'm definitely excited about Jess!

    19. I usually buy a doll, THEN fit them into my story~ Or thats usually how it turns out!

    20. no, i just like pretty things
