Does any doll you buy have to fit a story?

Sep 12, 2010

    1. I buy a doll because I like it and then usually a story happens around the doll.

    2. I bought mine mostly because she was limited to 25 dolls and I didn’t want to wait and then regret it later.

But I honestly don’t really have a ‘story’ or character for any of the future dolls I want or the one I have now. I’m slowly getting use to calling her and referring to her as a she and am trying to give her a ‘background’.
But personally when I’m adding a doll to my wish list its mostly for the looks rather than the fact that I have a set idea I’m trying to stick with.
My only dilemma though is that my girl is 14 cm. I want to get a realpuki (around 9 cm) but then I’m also wanting to do a kid Doll chateau hybrid with a DIM head (maybe) and they’re close to the 40-50 cm range. I saw a comparison of the same doll I have with a bigger doll chateau doll and…OMG the difference was so large that I don’t know if I’d get a doll chateau just for the reason it may not really fit with the other dolls i want.
So it would kind of be like my characters. But anywho not to get off topic but I like dolls for their looks rather than for my image of a character

    3. None of my dolls : I never bought dolls to create a character or story.
I have my dolls because I love to sew and take pictures. I bought sculpts whose aesthetic speaks to me. Some pictures may seem to give them some character traits and it is quite suggestive, that's what I like!!

    4. The first dolls I got didn't fit any story what so ever. I came up with names and brief characters based on the sculpt I got. This time around I did it the other way around.

I work as a story writer and concept artist at Coffee Stain Studios, making videogames. So the new character for our game Sanctum 2 is a character I've written and developed over several years. I just love her so much and have a strong connection to her. I found the perfect doll to match her style (a Doll Chateau Christina) and now I'm going to get a Doll Chateau Dolores to go along as a character in that same story universe. It's a whole new way of "playing" with dolls for me and it brings so much more depth into it. From now on I think I'll always want a well developed character for each new doll I get, before I even choose a sculpt.

    5. This is true for me 100%, many of the dolls who didn't make it into my signature are the ones who are 1. Not strong enough characters in my novels 2. Were impulse buys that I regretted. Now they sit in a box unloved. :(

So I've learned over the years of collecting to choose characters and their dolls wisely. XD.

    6. When I look at dolls I do think about my stories and characters that I already have in place but most of the time if I see a doll I really want I'll create a character to match it. There isn't really a way for my character list to ever be full, new characters can always be added. I don't think I could ever pass up a doll that I love for a reason like that :3

    7. My dolls are bought because I looked at owner photos and thought "Ohhh purdy..I NEEEEEED that doll!" I have a hard time even thinking of names for my brood.

    8. My first doll didn't fit a story or character I already had in mind. But after getting her, I started forming a story and character for her. This is the case for my future dolls too, since I don't usually have concrete plans for the characters/stories I have and I've been eying some dolls already. I usually just buy dolls because I like how they look. Giving them stories and characters is a way for me to bond with them :) So they all eventually will have a name, story, character, etc.

    9. No story, character etc. However, the longer my little 5star Ria is here, the more I think she has a little Elf magic in her.

    10. They dont have to, they can get a story when they cames araound. Sometimes makes new dolls I see, new stories and carachter intromy head, and they will fit in. Sooner or later. SOme few never fitted, but that is because we did not bonded, and maybe it was not the best carachter or story I had in mine. So maybe others would made it better with same doll. But, the doll I want most, fit into a story, since I know they are on my wishlist, I have pans for them, that is why I want them more than others. But time to time, I discover some new that just will be another carachter, and I can realy love the new story I get them into.

    11. I recently purchased a doll that had no character attached to him as I promised to let that form after he's made his way here and yet vague threads of his personality are already starting to form and root in my subconscious. Despite the lack of character he is still bound to belong in the same story as all my other characters (as well as my friend's) however.

    12. My dolls kinda build their own stories when I get them or decide on a certain doll.

more like the dolls kinda inspire a character, or tell me who they are and its my job to kinda string them together. lol

    13. When I get my dolls, usally, they'll first be based on differnet character of mine, that's how I justify buying them, but soon they'll take a completly different route with an entirely new story.
And when they don't have a story, I get really irritated and don't want to play or even look at my doll. So yeah, they need a story...I don't think I could keep a doll if I didn't have a story for them.

    14. Of all the dolls that I have, some I bought because I liked the look. Others because they fit perfectly with his character. This depends on what I have in mind ... I adapt to the circumstances. There is a bit of everything ^ ^
Sometimes my character fits so well with a model, which could never be otherwise. It does not support anything else.
And that is not very good for me (is something that drives me crazy xDDD)

    15. Well... as for me... I always create the character, right after I decided to get a new doll.
And the new dolls always fit the story I created for my previous doll(s).

Even though they're from different background & job, but...
I can always find a way to make them fit one to another.
I even make some adjustments, so the new dolls can fit it.

Or I can always make another story for them.
I don't want the previous story stops me from getting new dolls.

    16. I seem to get dolls to fit CLOTHES not stories! I'll see an outfit I 'must have' and then go searching for the right doll to wear it - absolutely mad when the outfit costs £20 and the doll costs £200 LOL - really the beauty of bjd is you can change their wigs and get them multiple outfits and 'looks' - they don't need to stay the same doll all the time - but I do tend to want my dolls to remain in character once I've found the right clothes for them - I create the vaguest character sketch and they stay that way - It would be far more economical to have one, characterless doll with several different clothing styles though!

    17. Yes...the characters are already pre-existing and I'm just trying to find a doll that they can manifest in. And no, I'll never consider buying another doll that doesn't fit.
I gave in on my second doll and boy did I regret it. I bought her coz she was limited and oh so cute. But she lived in my drawer for some time and I've only taken her out twice to look at her. Every time I look at her I regret getting her but she's so cute I just don't want to sell her.
I've recently just put her back in her company box so she can go into storage. I'll never sell her, but she has no purpose or character in my stories.

    18. I am a bit of both. There are dolls I want to buy specifically because they remind me of a character, there are characters I have that I want to find dolls for, and then there are dolls I just plain like and would buy and then make a character for when they arrived. I like all my dolls to have characters, but whether or not they fit a preexisting character of mine doesn't automatically rule them out. If they do look like a character of mine, however, they are definitely getting bumped up the want list.

    19. My dolls don't really have a story, I have an image of what I want the doll to look like then the search begins.

    20. I prefer my dolls to be based off of two things before I buy them:
      1) A character of mine that will be their default and,
      2) Their cosplay potential.

I think basing my purchases on those two focal points helps me decide if I really want a doll or if I'm just infatuated with it. It kind of keeps me under control. Yes, I'd love to have the Aragorn Delf from Luts, but how would I even begin to develop him? I'm a person who really loves to plan things all out so when the doll arrives, I can have them and their look completed ASAP.

That being said, I'm open to the idea of buying a doll on a whim if I'm in love with it as well, but I think I'll have to be struck with a "you just know" feeling for that to happen.
