Does any doll you buy have to fit a story?

Sep 12, 2010

    1. For my first doll, she should have a story, since it make me easier to choose between so much sculpt.
I'm not with my future doll, but I think my first male doll will going have to fit in the story too.

    2. When I buy dolls, I usually only buy ones that I can think of a concept for as I look at the sculpt. But obviously I have to like the sculpt to begin with! They don't have to fit into a certain "story", my dolls all have their own little worlds, basically. And I have made a rule for myself that I am absolutely NOT to start buying dolls of my fictional characters that already exist. Because once I start, I won't be able to stop, and I have too many characters!

I prefer my dolls to have personalities though, so I at least come up with one while I'm paying it off, or while it's in transit, or even from playing around with it. :)

    3. Sometimes I'm going after characters but generally if I like a bjd the fact it does not fit a character of mine is not a factor. I currently own one character doll and one I picked because I found her pretty and my next will probably be the latter too. I love my characters but that doesn't mean I can not make new ones or expand from them.

    4. This is an interesting question!
I'm sort of the opposite, I buy dolls I like and then write stories for them ^^

    5. I fall more into the buy first think later category. I prefer fantasy dolls so they kind of all exist in the same universe for me, but I find they sorto f tell me about themselves the longer I have them.

    6. I generally am happy to buy dolls even if I don't have a character for them, as long as I think I'll be able to find a character that fits them. For example, I bought my Soom Amber without having a character for her, because I knew for sure I could fit a sheep-eared, doe-eyed character into my story.

On the other hand, I will pass up dolls I don't think will ever fit my world. For example, I loved Soom's new MSD-sized centaurs... but there's just no room for them with my current crew. If I had unlimited money, I'd have bought them just for the fun of owning them. But I don't, and so I didn't ;)

    7. Yeah, I so tried this, years ago when I first was active in the hobby. It lasted for a while, but I found myself falling for dolls that had drastically different aesthetics. I was torn about it until I just decided to screw it and go for what I wanted; not everything has to fit into a neat little box! Now I have some dolls with extensive backstories and characters, some with just a vague idea of a character, and some dolls that are just dolls. :) It works for me.

    8. The first two dolls I bought I didn't have characters in mind for, but now they've got a story of their own which is fun! However now that I'm deeper into the hobby I wouldn't buy a doll that didn't match up with an already existing character...right now I'm trying to shell all my d&d characters, since I love them just as much as characters from my writing, but they can stand alone & I don't feel the need to buy every single person in the story.

If I ever come into a bunch of money, I wouldn't hesitate to buy a doll version of every single character of mine though... a girl can dream right?

    9. I try to figure out their personality/story before I buy them, but if I really really like them, I usually don't mind since it will probably come to me sooner or later. I bought my doll Mei (Resinsoul Mei) second hand, and it was kind of a bad decision now that I think of it, because I mostly bought her because she was pretty cheap and the right size, haha... But when she got here, I loved her, and now she has a personality and everything! ^-^

    10. My dolls don't really have a story, but they're all students at the same school so I try to go for sculpts that don't look odd next to my existing dolls. So for my SDs I'm on the lookout for more mature, realistic sculpts (my two grails don't fit this, so I'll probably never get them as a result. I wouldn't know what to do with them) and my MSDs are less mature and more cutesy.
For me I buy dolls to fit a certain personality rather than a story. I get an idea for a character and then find a doll that fits. If I see a doll I like that doesn't fit any of my character ideas, I add it to my wishlist and wait until I think of something for them. I couldn't own a doll without having a good idea of who it is.
I find this gives me the freedom to buy any doll that I like the look of, but also allows me to be creative with them.

    11. Not at all; I buy what looks aesthetically pleasing to me THEN create a character and inject them into my current story. :)

    12. I didn't even have a story back then and I thought, no, every sculpts are fine, I could create their profiles later. However, now I do have a planned story and the dolls that are on my actual, prioritized wishlist are the characters of my story. Story does help to guide you to choose which one is what you want and should get earlier.

    13. I bought my IslandDoll Eric with one character in mind James Carstairs from the Clockwork Angel,Prince and Princess books, 'Jem' James Jian Carstairs. Half British half Chinese, demon poisoned, pale with gray hair and eyes but still a nephilim. I have not gotten around to painting on his runes, but I'm glad I didn't because I got some great info from my niece who does tattoos. She told me the best way to paint them.
The others just moved in with their own story.

    14. My dolls have a world of their own, and each also has its backstory relates to each other. My first doll is the beginning of the whole story. Then followed by others, my second came in accidentally so I hadn't planed any story for her, but in hours she came into story perfectly. Now I'm planing for my third doll. He gonna be one of the main character in my story ^^

    15. I bought my first doll because his face looks so much like the main character from one of my stories. For my future dolls surely it would be nice when they would fit some of my characters but it's not "have to", i can imagine buying a doll without this :)

    16. I don't really have a doll yet but the ones I'm looking at created my story. Like once I saw them, I started thinking about a story for them and names and how they'd look. It's kind of how I know I like or want something when I can automatically place it in a scenario or constantly think about it.

    17. I wouldn't really buy a doll to fit a certain character, because not only is that extremely difficult to get it just right, I find that if I ever lose interest in said character it would be a shame to lose interest in the doll :( I prefer to buy a doll that I love, and from there, get inspiration for a new character and get to know them that way!

    18. My doll doesn't have to fit in a story. I mean she can be anyone I want her to be. I think i like it better if she can be flexible to various personalities than being a specific character on a story :)

    19. In theory, yes. I have a pretty detailed doll plan to shell my OCs. Though, I admit I actually impulse bought a doll last year because I wanted a cute boy to dress up. The other boys coming into my collection are going to be pretty manly men with hard to clothe bodies, so they'll likely only have one or two outfits. I like all the boys' clothes too much to limit myself to that, hah.

    20. I have 1 doll I bought because he was just too awesome not to have. The others I usually buy with a character in mind or the sculpt reminds me of a character, and I think "Oh! That would make an awesome _________."
