Does any doll you buy have to fit a story?

Sep 12, 2010

    1. I suppose you can fit any doll into a story after you buy him/her, but I do prefer to buy dolls that are more mature or adult looking, since the ones I currently have are mature/adult. I do like to be able to include any new dolls in the stories I'm already creating, and I very often find that I'm already imagining how they'll fit in while I wait for them to arrive.

    2. Most of the dolls I want now are based off of characters that are preexisting. However, the first doll I got (which is now moving up from an MSD to an SD as soon as the body comes in the mail~ yes I already have his new head XD) did not have a character, but now that said character has been fleshed out and is currently one of my most in depth characters! So even though most of the dolls I want are based off of characters I have already made, I would be open to getting a doll and forming a character for it as time went on. Who knows, it may just end up being my best character yet!

    3. Originally in the hobby, I bought a doll because she was pretty, and had a wing. I LOVE flying figures, I used to collect fairy figurines as a kid, and I've wanted a BJD for about four years now. I didn't originally have a character for it, it was only when I became part of the community I felt a bit pressured to make her a story. I started to, but it didn't feel right, so I'm not giving her a 'character'. She'll definitely have a personality, but not a story, as such! She's just going to be a companion for me.

    4. I ended up fleshing out characters for dolls, and then started making a story! I don't know if it'll all be written out, but it just felt natural for me to make a story. I know that I may get some dolls that won't fit into the story though!

    5. I don't have characters or stories for my dolls. I try to have an idea in mind as to what type of personality they'll have/what kind of clothes they'll wear when I buy them. Otherwise I sort of let them develope their own character/personality after I receive them!

    6. So far the dolls I have and all the ones I have planned for the near future are part of a kind of interconnected story line that I have going. There are actually 3 different story lines going but they all kind of converge in some way. Anyway I do like to only put dolls on my current wish list who are part of those story lines. I have other dolls that I like and other characters that I have in mind but because they aren't part of these established story lines I'm not planning on buying them any time soon, as cool as it would be to have some of them. Lately all of the new dolls that I've seen that I've really wanted have some how magically fit themselves into my storyline, and the character list in my story is growing because I get really inspired by the dolls I see. I wonder if it's like that for anyone else.

Also on my computer I have a folder where I keep pictures of sculpts, clothes, faceups and stuff like that for my reference. And I actually have a folder that is called "sculpts I like without characters" where I keep pictures of sculpts that I've found that I just really love but I can't think of a character for them. And sometimes I will go through that folder and look at the pictures and something new will come to me and I will figure out a character for one of the sculpts which is really fun.

    7. All of my dolls have stories they come from as specific characters. They all come from the same world but very different time lines.

    8. The next doll I'm planning will shell a very old OC of mine, so that one will, and my first and incoming doll has a name and personality, but no story yet.

    9. All my dolls will fit into one main story ^^ They each have a character and a role~

    10. Right now yes my dolls are part of a story I am writing but I am sure as I have done in the past, the cutiness of a doll will catch me I will need her.

    11.
    12. Nope! For the majority of my collection, I bought the doll because it inspired me to create a new character and/or story. I actually have a much harder time finding dolls to fit preexisting characters. Nothing matches the character I've envisioned in my head!

    13. I personally like my dolls to be little girls! I have 2 LTF's, a Rolly and a Bisou, they are BFF and so cute together! I dress them like maybe 6 to 7 years old....

    14. I finally got myself to stick only to dolls that fit my characters.
Its also a pretty good excuse to not overdo and getting crazy about everything you just 'like'.^^
I really like that I can finally focus on a main collection. :)

    15. Not-"definitely must to fit"... I could create a new background to fit them and main story plot instead, so no need to worry if they will fit . Only one thing that I will consider a bit, is...style. I don't want a total black sheep in the group :D (A grey sheep is acceptable! ;))

    16. I don't have a set story with set characters, so dolls that until this point didn't fit, can be made to do so.
The only dolls that don't fit are dolls that are similar to my existing characters, but done in a different style.
For example: I have an Iplehouse Luna who's all cat anthro. But since IH's style is pretty realistic, I couldn't see myself getting a Dollmore Catish doll or one of the cat girls Aileendoll released. They wouldn't fit.

    17. They don't have to fit a story, but they have to be my characters. I realized it not that long ago : I have to have a really character's project for a doll I'm purchasing. Even my absolute grail doll, I wouldn't know what to do of her since I have no character or project for her. Even though I'm madly in love with her sculpt, she doesn't exist as a character, and I know I won't feel comfortable with it. I like having characters I love as BJD, even if sometimes I'm not that much into the sculpt, I love it because I see my character in it. The character don't have to be precise, with a name and story, it can also be just and idea of character. For example, I want a post-apocalyptic character, MSD sized, and I've found the perfect mold. I don't need more, I know his personnality and character will developp once I'll have him.

    18. I try to only get dolls that fit into the story line. That means realistic MSD sculpts. I can get away with buying something smaller (say, a Withdoll Tiny :D) because they can be incorporated as children or some kind of fairy or spirit characters but SDs and bigger are a total no-no as they don't fit into the story at all and are way too expensive. Even with MSDs I'm highly selective as the dolls need to be mature and realistic both face- and bodywise and that means I'm limited to maybe five companies...

    19. While it seems like a lot of doll owners create characters for their dolls in one form or another (a set name and backstory or just personality traits) for various reasons I do so with the dolls I've purchased because I write quite a bit as a longer running hobby of mine. A novel I'm creating fits in the dolls I've bought as central characters. Sometimes the doll comes first and then it must be fit into the story and other times I look for a doll that fits a pre-established character. If anything I'd consider character creation to be the primary reason why I'm so interested in dolls. It gives them a certain depth and purpose that only increases their sentimental value. I haven't even received my first two yet but already their places in my story are well established. I trust more dolls will follow under this premise.

    20. I have bought my first two dolls with the idea of my RP characters in mind.
However, that doesn't mean that I think they have to fit a specific storyline.
My third doll I actually bought with the idea that she doesn't belong to any story.
(She may do in the future, but I liked the idea of not tying her down to one specific idea, meaning she could wear anything)
