1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

Does any doll you buy have to fit a story?

Sep 12, 2010

    1. I don't have characters for my dolls. Although their face sculpt, makeup, and style of clothes can sometimes inspire a few personality traits.

    2. They definitely don't have to fit a story at first. A story always comes to them though :)

    3. I have a world that I'm shaping for my dolls, and I want all of my dolls to be able to be a part of it, but because it's an urban fantasy setting, there is a LOT of wiggle room. I'm not shelling pre-existing characters, but rather buying sculpts that would fit into a world that I've created. This s mostly because I want to be able to take pictures with all of my dolls, and I want them to be related to each other in some way.

    4. no...but It will be great to make stories for them. It sounds very interesting and actually make them more alive.

    5. All the dolls I bought are well developed characters, except for my most recent doll (Soom ID51 Hornblend).
I won't buy a doll only if it's only pretty. Somehow it gives them a personality. Some modifications of their stories can be made afterward but they are minors. The reason why I collect BJD is the fun to recreate my characters and make them as close as the "original".
If it wasn't of that, I would have busted my "dolly-budget" long ago!

    6. It's a good question! :D currently yes I searched BJDs basing on the characters that I have and also, when I see cute dolls but does not seem to have even a chance to be in the story, I will step aside them, are cute and there are some that I love but just do not go with what I have thought, so I just admire them. :) Currently, my first BJD Emma (Supiadoll Lina) I actually looked through a lot of possibilities, and she has an extra difficulty, not only her face and body had to look like her, and she had to pose well, she had to be tan. She is beautiful and perfect for me!
I just ordered a second BJD of 1/6, I admit that is not so straightforward to history, but he is adorable and is the son of Emma, I guess I did not think too much because he is a small child, and a children are still developing their personality, he is not be in color tan, but the father (who I hope one day to have) is white, so hiยดs more like him.
I do not know what happen in the future, but I feel that I shall not move much of what I have already done, XD now I would like to write the story, I hope to do some day...

    7. A lot of my BJD's shell original characters that I've had for a long time, and even the ones that didn't start out as oc's developed into them very quickly. I live for character design, stories included.
That being said I really just want to be able to have a doll or two that are for pure aesthetics, maybe a really nice fantasy fullset or something haha~

    8. Mine hasn't arrived yet, but I don't intend for her to fit into any story lines.
When I first joined the hobby, I mostly planned to make them all my original characters. But then I couldn't afford a doll, so I put the hobby aside until recently. Because I'm hoping to stick to one BJD instead of a whole cast of them (at least, for a while...) I purposefully decided to have her be standalone. It gave me the chance to choose a sculpt I really liked back then but had no character for at the time.
I don't think I can stop myself from giving her a character, but it's unlikely that she'll go into any currently-existing stories of mine.
(It might be fun to have her cosplay as my characters, but I think that's a little different?)

    9. Currently, yes, I try to fit the sculpts I like into the characters I want shelled, but if that doesn't happen, no biggie. I mean, some fit well, and some take a little time to adjust, right?

    10. All of the dolls I have and WILL have fit into a universe I have created and have been working on for liiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiike.... 8?? 9?? years?? hahaha so all of their sculpts are suuuuuuper hard to find since I've had these characters faces and personalities in my head for sooooooooo long haha #thestruggle...

    11. I've just ordered my first doll, and I've decided to wait until she get here to tell me her name. Then I'll find out who she is. :daisy

    12. I don't have pre-existing stories for my dolls. I mostly buy dolls that inspire me in some way. Then, I might daydream a story for it.

    13. Yes, otherwise I don't really bond with them. :-I
I bought my first doll because it looks, without any pre-made backstory. I regretted it. Of course, I like him but I do not love him and there is huge difference between these two words. The lesson learned: I may adore many dolls from afar but never, never hit the order button if do not have a character for it. ^^'

    14. Nope, honestly I'm mostly more toward visual aesthetic aspect of the dolls. If I got that right, I won't have any problem putting them on my story.

    15. Coming up with stories is one of my passions, and even if I'm not the best writer, I have all sorts of ideas. Even if a doll of mine doesn't start out with a character behind them (which is rare in and of itself), they soon develop one, and their personality grows and grows. I need to get back into the habit of writing every day like I did in high school, maybe then I could get all their stories written down!

    16. Yes, otherwise I won't buy the doll. xD; I really enjoy coming up with characters, worlds, stories, etc so it's kind of a necessity for my doll to have at least a character. Otherwise I don't feel like doing anything with my doll. Plus I find it hard to come up with poses and such when taking pictures if my doll doesn't have a character and therefore doesn't have any reaction to their environment.

    17. I only owned one doll this morning, but my second arrived home today and awaiting her unboxing tonight (OMG....the workday is lasting forEVER)...even though I am new, I'll chime in and say that I've found my already-home girl to sort of adopt different personas depending on what wig/eyes/clothing etc. I have her in....she doesn't have a single name, etc...the new girl I'm going home to meet theoretically is going to be made up to be my old FFXI character (spent ten years with her, and still miss her so hopefully it's a fit :-) ) Guess either locking in a character or just being a changeling is ok....as long as you are enjoying your dolls. :-P

    18. No. They arrive and slowly get a personality. They don't have a set story but acquire snippets of stories.

    19. I'm planning on buying several dolls based on characters I've made; I've eben looking at sculpts specifically because of how the features could fit my characters. However sometimes I'll be drawn to a doll simply from how beautiful it is.

    20. My first doll is based on my original visual novel character and has a story of his own, but my second doll is... just my doll! I have the best of both worlds, haha! :)
