Does any doll you buy have to fit a story?

Sep 12, 2010

    1. Besides the almost limitless customization draw, I really wanted a BJD simply for the reason of bringing a persona to my RP characters. So more than buying a doll and trying to squeeze it into my story, I've already got the personality, I just need a form XP So I guess my reasoning is a tad bit different.

    2. For me... no, they don't HAVE to fit a story. I want to start collecting dolls who very much embody the characters I RP and write about, to have them sort of 'go together' aesthetically, and to be able to dress and photograph them together in character, but my very first doll I bought because he was cute and I fell in love with him. He doesn't fit into any story whatsoever, and he doesn't quite go with my other dolls. It doesn't matter to me, because I love him and I do like having a doll who can be dressed up any old way without worrying that 'it doesn't fit his character'.

    3. I got into dolls purely for the photography / photostory aspect of it and how I could customize them to shell out my roleplaying characters, so it's fairly important to me that my dolls fit in with a character. That said I'm not against buying a doll just because I love the sculpt, I can always shoehorn the doll into the story/roleplay one way or another, and then let it trail of to their own little side-story or something. So basically, they don't have to fit into the story or a pre-existing character, but I'm more likely to buy a doll if it does.

    4. Nope, not usually! I can't make stories to save my life! I get a doll for its sculpt, and then let it create its own story, in a way. Sometimes I do have something in mind beforehand, but generally the doll takes over and tells me what he/she is/wants. I like it best that way, I've found.

    5. I only have two dolls, both have characters. I bought my first one because I loved the way he looked and he was just perfect. I did not have a character in mind when I bought him. When he got to my house is when I thought of a character.
My second doll I bought with a character in mind for her
Overall, I would buy a doll without a character in mind :). However, they will probably get a character sooner or later. In the future, I will probably buy a doll that never gets a character haha.

    6. No, in fact none of my dolls fit in a story. They don't even have backgrounds. I collect them for the sake of enjoying their beauty and customizing them. I don't write, never was interested in creating characters or making up stories, etc. I love to draw, paint and customize but that's the farthest my imagination goes. x)

    7. Nope.

While I do play the "character game" to some extent (Many of my crew are resin versions of favorite tabletop RPG or on-line MMO characters-), I'm not really a One-Story-To-Rule-Them-All person.

Sometimes I'll go looking for a sculpt that fits a certain favorite character's look... but in general, I tend to buy my dolls based on how much I like the sculpt, not on how well they might suit a particular pre-made personna.

    8. EVERYONE i own,EVERYONE coming,EVERYONE to come has to fit a character, from the same story. It's my drive for BJDs,the hole story's creation thing.Without it i wouldn't enjoy in nearly as much. Its like a challenge, and once you figure it all out VERY rewarding.

    9. A while back, no. Now, yes! I have 75! They need to fit in!

    10. None of mine are based on characters, so that's definitely not an issue. However, it is important for me to get dolls that fit in with my collection. If a doll doesn't look good with my other dolls, it's likely that I'll sell it (or at least try to sell it). In order for me to buy a doll that wouldn't fit in, I would have to like it so well that it would be worth setting up a new area away from the other dolls.

    11. I have 29 dolls and not a one of them has a "story" or for that matter, even a character. They just "are". They hang out and look beautiful and make me happy. That's their sole purpose. I mean, they have names and their own little personalities, if you want to call it that, but as for being full fledged members of an ongoing story, no.

    12. Most of my dolls, I got them and then I'm coming up with a story for them. Most of them have bits of a story but I'll sit down at some point and actually write it out and completely work it out.

The only exception to this is my WS F60 Mirwen - Moira...Moira is the reason I got into BJDs in the first place. Years ago, I used to roleplay on medieval horror chats and Moira was my evil little bloodthirsty vampire. Everyone on the chats had the habit of using famous people's photos to represent their characters and I never found one that suited her, so I got into 3D rendering but I was never particularly good at it (though my husband will probably tell you otherwise).

After a while, I remember saying to him that I'd love to have a physical representation of Moira and I was looking online at dolls and things. I remember spotting a Woosoo Vampire girl and thinking about how awesome she looked but I was a bit put off by the price.

A few years (and a significantly better job later), I found the F60 Mirwen who is a perfect representation of my vampire-eating little scottish monster and I can now afford this hobby...and I have my Moira who has the right wig, right eyes...now I just need her outfit :)

    13. None of my dolls have stories. I buy dolls just because I like the way they look.

    14. I will have to say yes, absolutely. I have found out in a bad way that I cannot bond with a doll unless it has an actual story going on. Thankfully I have no trouble getting the dolls I like to fit in the story as it takes place in a multiverse where mostly anything can exist.

Not all dolls have stories as extensive as other dolls, and it always depends on how deep I decide to dive every time to unearth things. There had been characters that existed a while without me attaining them in doll form and characters that existed before I even knew of dolls that are planned to be brought home as well. It helps a lot that me and my best friend roleplay them all the time, though.

But other than that yes, there are many loves that I love very very much but couldn't bring myself to own as they would fit nowhere at all ><

    15. Well not really, my first doll Kapukii didn't have a lets say specific character. I'd planned her to be a princess who delivered dead souls to the perfect body of a doll (I had a very good imagination back then). But as I got older, she became immature, cheeky and now she's just a simple girl who writes sappy novels. She got lonely and wanted a boyfriend, then Han came around, he didn't have any character apart from the fact he was supposed to be Kapukii's boyfriend, he started out being shy and new to the world, now he's a street smart 19 year old, who has no job and has to rely on Kapukii.

I've just bought a new doll, she's a 1/3. It was sort of an impulse buy, both of my dolls are 1/4 so I'm wondering how she will fit in I'm thinking that she should be really tough, and roudy but that probably will change hehe!

    16. yes, for me i couldnt see myself buying a doll without it having a connection to the others following a storyline. this makes it hard for me to find the right doll(s) due to my preconceived ideas of them which i feel i must adhere to. kinda silly isnt it? i wish i could like them simply because of how they looked, it would be easier then.

    17. Well, basically, some of my dolls bear the names and some "character traits" of some of the characters I've come up with for stories. Some of them. Not all of them. Actually, the majority of my dolls isn't connected in any way to my stories. I just got some of those dolls so I could better imagine what certain characters look like (cos I'm a kinda visual type and find it easier to write about a character when I know what s/he looks like ...). So when I say "This is Luken", what I actually mean is "This is kinda the 3D 'drawing' of Luken that I bought in doll-form since I'm not as good at drawing as I wish I were". Whereas when I say "This is Magnus", what I mean is something like "Well, I liked the doll, I like to name my dolls, the name Magnus struck me as suitable, so my Narin 411 is now called Magnus". I don't really need the dolls for my stories. But I've always liked dolls and BJDs are just really, really awesome. ;)

    18. I bought my doll because I liked her pretty face, not because of how well I thought she would fit into a story. It's unlikely that I would ever purchase a doll for the sake of a particular story or character alone. That might change if I found the right doll/character combination, but I don't see it happening anytime soon.

    19. I like them for the way they look. I wanted a cool looking doll, I bought an El. I wanted a happy Asian boy, I bought a Wu. I wanted a tall Bermann-esque doll, and I bought a SSDF 08Man. They have names and seem to have personalities based on their looks, but I wouldn't call them characters anymore. They don't have stories. So I don't have this problem.

    20. Yup. All my dolls are bought to placehold characters I've made. It's just my thing. If I've already bonded with the character, it's easier to bond with the doll.
