Does your price limit keep going higher/lower with each doll?

Jan 8, 2011

    1. I haven't gotten the chance to really see any second hand dolls, so at the moment I'm just going on from-the-company prices and dolls. But I get that 'it's not so bad' feeling about other purchases, like art tablets, that I know if I put a doll on layaway and put a little towards it every month that I won't miss the money and it won't seem so bad at all. :')

      To me, expensive and reasonable changes from doll to doll. Some of them I can easily see myself spending the money on others I find it's way too much. Just depends on what it looks like and how much I want it. If I really really want it, expensive might seem reasonable to me. /if that makes any sense?
      Umm. . . for instance. I believe Soul Doll's prices are amazing and I want Soul Kids out the wazoo, but I'm dying to have a Minifee and would be willing to pay the increase to have her because the body is just too cute. Like I don't think I would pay Fairyland prizes for Soul Doll's soul kids, but would pay it for the Minifee.

    2. My prices have fluctuated...a LOT. It really depends on the doll for me, honestly.

      My cheapest is my Resinsoul Yu at around $90 dollars. And my most expensive is my red riding hood trinity at $2380. And I pretty much have everything in between.

      The thing that it comes down to with me quite often is the size. I'm sorry, but I would never pay a huge amount for a doll that is smaller than an MSD. I love SOOM, but their prices do pain me a little. I shelled out around 400 bucks for my SOOM yo-sd, while all of my other yo-sd's were way less expensive and are just as nice and dear to me.

      I've realized that I definitely lean more towards MSD sized and up, but I also have realized that the bigger the doll, the more I am willing to spend on them (If I like them) But I just can't find myself justifying paying 200-300 dollars for a tiny...

    3. My thoughts exactly. o: $225-$270-$583-$295(x4 dolls, only dip so far, unfortunately. TwT)-$746
      Add in the clothes, wigs, shoes, etc. and I'll want to cry. ;w;

      Now I'm willing to spend up to $900 secondhand for my next doll. I just recently lost out on one on ebay because someone went above my max bid and I didn't wake up in time. D: Honestly, I feel like an addict sometimes. xD Monster Highs are pretty...maybe I should consider them too. o:

    4. My dolls are all over the board, my first doll was a gift and around $350, my second was also a gift and at $400 ish, my third doll was $50 (a hujoo freya to play with the kids), but after that i got a jimi head for $30, a BBB Apoll and RS Mei for exactly $365 lol. And second hand pocket fairy may for $130something and a second/third hand Abadon for $110 plus traded spare wig

    5. My price limit varies a lot. I have BJDs ranging from $50 to $900. Personally, I thought my $900 doll (a vampire Khal LE from Leekeworld) would be my most expensive purchase. However, I'm currently in the process of creating a Daryl Dixon look-a-like from The Walking Dead..and commissioning someone to make a specific head for me and do a professional face up is probably going to cost me around $300-$400 when it's all finished, and then I keep stalking the marketplace for a volks sd17 body to put him on. And they seem to go from $850-$1400....so....I think it's safe to say that he will be my most expensive. I sure hope both me and the jollyplus mcqueen I'm getting him for love him. lolz

    6. No, not really. I tend to know what I can afford and I will wait until a doll hits the range I can afford or not buy it at all. No matter how much I might love an expensive doll there's a limit to what I can afford and I do have to be realistic about it. I simply cannot afford to pay a month's rent for one doll.

    7. I tend to bounce back and forth with the amount I spend on dolls. I try to base my decisions not on the price but on how much I want a certain doll. My most expensive doll is Volks Maki Tsuyoshi. I spent a bit over $2500 for a fullset. Had to buy it secondhand since he was a licensed doll and wasn't offered to overseas customers. My least expensive is an Angell Studio Adam. I bought him early when Angell Studio was a new company and he was only $250. My first doll was a fullset Iplehouse Soo-Ri, which was $600, so its right in between. My price limit varies depending on the doll.

    8. It was a huge deal for me to spend $275 for my first doll. I sort of tricked myself into buying it by making a plan to use it in an art project that I was at the time applying for a grant to accomplish. GAte-WaY drug for sure! While watching eBay for some accessories I *just happened* to see an msd that looked a bit like a little orphan. I bid and won her at $110. Serendipity Alice. Tiny little features, so different from my SD AOD. I had tripped my trigger at that point. I could never have imagined I would find so much joy in bjd, OR spend so much money. My most expensive doll, so far, was Olivia DC. Not SO much. But on a few occasions I have spent over $1,000 on a single order. Ever hear of the frog in pot of warm water. Gradually increase heat and...well you probably get it. I'm cooked! No doubt.

    9. My price limit has only gone up, heh. :...(

      I moved up from a $150 doll to a $300 doll... and now I'm thinking of a $450 doll. I guess as I see them in real life, I realize how much I like them, and what the quality is, and I understand more about them as I look at pictures... and once I get that $450 doll, I'll think "well she's nice but if I spent a little more she could be BIGGER..." I hope I can start going backwards in price soon. :XD:

    10. I think so far my purchases have been relatively similar. First, I bought just a littlefee as well as a wig for her. She was kind of like my tester and I love her. Then I bought A littlefee baby and a pukifee so that I could get the juri '13 head. It went up a little because I bought two dolls, but was still awfully close in price. Now I'm planning to get a Feeple60 in the next week or two... yet the price for her (just the doll and no face up) will because about the same as my other two purchases.
      Honestly, I get the dolls that I know I want to have. I'm not the type of person who just settles for something I can afford. I'm willing to wait and save for what I truly want, so price isn't the hugest deal to me because I'll get there eventually.

    11. Not for me. My first doll was my most expensive (Volks Chii).

      I think it's difficult to determine if there's a pattern of spending more with each doll. Even after you purchase a doll you put money into maintaining him or her either with new clothes or accessories etc. I've also spent more a dress for one doll than I did for the original purchase price of another doll altogether.

      In general however, I do believe company prices are slowly increasing, which I believe is especially due to the wage increase in China.

    12. Its actually been fluctuating up and down, but mostly lower if needed ^^;;;

      I try to save money by going to etsy to buying handmade clothes or ebay for stuff from china, what I do is that I try to limit myself to between $50-60 on regular outfits, if its much fancier I of course have to spend more UvU

    13. I seem to recall saying at one point that I wouldn't spend more than £100/$150 on a doll again - but that didn't last long! However I do have an inbuilt subconscious limit I guess - I've never even thought about owning a doll which costs over £350 (approx) - around $550 - I look at them and admire them, but I don't WANT them, because I personally think that would be too much money to spend on 'just a doll'.....I have no idea where this limit came from, it was just there when I started and it's not gone up or down since. Silly really as 10 dolls costing £100 would buy me a dream doll costing £1000 (or $1500) - I have 12 dolls which cost more than that....*refuses to think about it* :XD: Maybe I just don't like investing so much in ONE object, as if it was too precious I would be afraid of damaging or losing it - and I would probably never take the doll out of its box!
      I do have another rule too - no layaway - I've never been tempted to use layaway, and I don't want to go down that road or I'll regret it! Having been in debt in the past, I know I'd rather have spare cash to buy those bargains you always chance upon when you have no spare cash!

    14. I have just bought my feeple60 juri 2012 and my budget was £300 including her wig and eyes her body was £265 and her head was £75 before shipping so that's the budget blown and her wig is £25 and her eyes re £15 so she is a bare bjd until January

    15. Each doll I buy seems to cost more than the last, but I'm okay with it... You have to offer a good price if you plan to find a rare limited doll! : p

    16. I've made the conscious choice that each doll will cost less than the last one, or quit the hobby. My wages arn't keeping up with the cost of living, so something has to give, and dolls are it, sigh. When my situation changes, then I'll be willing to spend more. I'm looking forward to that day!

    17. If your first doll was pretty expensive, do you start looking inherently for dolls of more reasonable prices?
      My first doll was a SD Soom limited, so I set the bar reasonably high right from the start (even though I didn't buy her as a fullset, she was still in the $700-$800 range). Since then, almost all my dolls have also been Soom limiteds, mostly the same size and around the same price. I must admit that buying my first Teenie was a big relief (~$300 versus ~$800 is a huge difference!), but I've found I prefer larger dolls, so price hasn't really influenced me there either.

    18. haha, higher and higher.. i'm trying to save some money in the hobby though, because i'm worried i'll run out of funds for anything else! :sweat

    19. Well, it helps to have a size limit. I only buy MSDs and below, which puts a certain cap on spending. Other than that, my price point is all over the place. I'm buying a Minifee soon, which was gonna be the most I'd ever spend on a doll, and after that I'm buying a cheaper Dollzone MSD....but then I saw Doll Chateau's new spider girl and aughh my previous price limit went out the window.

    20. My money that I get on payday limits me to what I can buy for how long of a layaway (starving Artist and art student going to art school) really does limit me on what I can get. there is no limit really for me as long as theres a way for me to get that doll with my budget. Like i am planning on putting in an layaway for the new DC spider girl and DZ's freebies which i will be buying separately. I think i will be able to make it work XD not too hard. Plus Christmas is coming up and I can ask for doll funds which will cut me some slack in a sense.
