Does your price limit keep going higher/lower with each doll?

Jan 8, 2011

    1. Do you ever feel that after your first inexpensive even second hand knock down priced doll, that you start looking at dolls of higher prices? Since you get used to the feeling that it may not be so bad once you have spent the money? You start to think "Eh that's not so bad."

That is it..I started for years never buying anything over 300, and almost always used. Now I am considering buying something new, from Iplehouse ...with even a faceup and clothes. I am thinking this is a one-time thing, though, since I came into a little money that will cover it.

If your first doll was pretty expensive, do you start looking inherently for dolls of more reasonable prices?

My very first one was around 150.00, and the next was a bit more, but I had a lot of sales that year, too.

Or do you just go back and forth with each purchase? Buy one expensive, one reasonable, then one expensive?

Alas, it's a steady upward trend. I'd like to buy less dolls, but ones that were just what I wanted, and that is starting to mean new... and expensive. But by buying a lot of cheaper dolls, I wasn't really saving money, I was buying experience. ;)

    2. I seem to be all over the board myself. My first doll was relatively inexpensive, as was my second, by my third was Soom and remains my priciest. These days I seem to either go uber!expensive with Soom LEs, or nice and inexpensive with secondhand or small companies like Impldoll. I'm trying to cut back a bit, but I do live in constant dread of SOOM. >.>

    3. At first I was like, $300 for a MSD girl? No big deal, I can afford that. (Now: *facepalm at not enough researching* But I regret nothing.)

Too much spending later, when it came to my second doll, I was like, $450 for a complete SD? No way! I'll buy a body secondhand or a cheaper mold! *stingy*

And then, my third doll was the most expensive when I had the least money. I don't even. Brain, you are weird.

    4. I'm pretty all over the place myself. My first was a DoT from Dream of Doll and he was a standard edition but I still bought him full set. He ended up over $800 with shipping included. My second was from Impldoll. She's a limited, 65cm and only cost a bit more than $400 with wig and shipping. Big shift huh? :sweat And now, I have a doll from Soom on layaway. He's going to be my shortest (52cm) yet has their centauroid body. So I don't know if he'll be my biggest or smallest doll to date, but he is the most expensive doll (in regards to blank doll only) that I will soon have.

The decisions I make to purchase a doll rely completely on their sculpt. How much they cost is irrelevant b/c in the end, I know I will have to save up for it no matter what.

    5. I'm a fair deal of all over the place. :P But, I'll say, I do a lot of dolls on layaway. And at least my layaway payments are all roughly the same :XD:

    6. I've only bought one doll--pretty expensive by my standards ($450, Planetdoll Mermaid Aqua Limited). The only other doll I'd want would be nearly $300 more. But the way I see it, prices don't really matter. It's the quality and appearance of the product that is important. If I can get the best, I will. Usually it only takes saving!

It's worth it to me to save up and buy one thing that is exactly what I want, rather than to buy for the sake of cost alone, or on an impulse. This saves money and ensures that I have exactly what I need or want.

    7. Well, since my first doll was around 500 USD already, I guess they won't come much more expensive than that for me. *gg* Since I got all kinds of doll-sized, of course, the prices do vary a lot, too. My "cheapest" one was 75 Euros (less than 100 USD), the most expensive one was a good 600 USD. Price isn't really relevant for me. If I find I want a doll enough to really WANT it, I'll save up for it and get it whenever I got the money.

What I did notice, though, is a general shift in whether I perceive things as expensive or cheap. Before BJDs, 50 Euros was expensive. Now, when I see something that I want for 50 Euros, I'm all "well, that's not really THAT expensive ..." *lol*

    8. In my case my price limit went higher but I kinda buy whatever I want XD
I mean, my first three dolls were about 200-300 dollars
then I bought my minifee wich is about 500 dollars
and now I've bought one for less than 300
but my current dream doll is around 600 dollars

This to say that my limit is higher now but I don't buy more expensive ones every time.

    9. I paid whatever the person was asking, I feel that it may have been quite high for second owner dolls, but I love them the way they are. I got 4 all in less then one month and spent a small fortune. The nice thing is, you know what you are getting, and when it will arrive! My first new doll is on her way and she is the second least I bought. She will be my first new ordered doll. So I am going to have fun with her. I have spent as high as 1100. for one doll and as low as 350. for another. Now I am broke! On a lighter note. They make me smile :) PS. I was only going to get one doll! (I got out of control) hee hee

    10. Yay for being broke and happy!

My first inexpensive doll purchased was a AoD Tiny. It ended up being strung too tightly, chipping resin and not all that impressive, and I`ve just found higher price = less problems and don`t buy low-priced doll.

If your first doll was pretty expensive, do you start looking inherently for dolls of more reasonable prices?

My first ever doll was a Volks SD13 FCS. Sure, I seem to collect Volks Yo-SD`s as they`re more "reasonably" priced. But no, I don`t look at the price as much, I look at the mold. My last few purchases were the Volks Gr Alice and Fairyskin Chibi-Unoa, which are generally more expensive than other dolls of the same size firsthand.

Or do you just go back and forth with each purchase? Buy one expensive, one reasonable, then one expensive?
I really go by sculpt so I might be doing this, exchanging between sizes.

    12. Well I started out thinking I'll only ever get dolls that are cheap, like my Freya whos an obitsu. But now I've got a dollzone yuu on layaway.

At the moment any doll above $600 is too expensive to me, but I'm sure there was a time I said that about dollzone yuu even though I loved him. so I guess as I get deeper into this hobby no doll will seem too expensive anymore.

    13. depends on the doll, the price and the budget I have..I have a limit of until 600 dollars..higher than that, even though I like the doll, I won't buy or save for it..i also have other priorities other than this dollies so I need to have a limit on my hobby..

    14. My price for dolls keeps going up and down like a see saw. I bought an AOD SD to start and thought that was the most expensive doll I would have and bought some obitsu's. I never bonded with the obitsu's and I bought another AOD SD, then a Dollzone MSD, Dollzone SD and more MSD's, then Impldoll, then down to little Doll Leaves, then Dollfactory, up to Latidoll and Fairyland, and then Spiritdoll, Iplehouse, Souldoll, back down to Resinsoul then a couple more in between to finally a Soom. I just need to be kept away from a computer that's all.

    15. Usualy price isn't an obstacle if I want a doll bad enough XD. I try to stay on the lower side though since I have other wallet-killing hbbies.

    16. Actually, it seems my tastes started with the slightly pricier dolls, rose to REALLY pricey, then went back down. When I started into this hobby, I didn't start out with what would be considered a "cheap doll". My first doll was a Dream of Doll DoI Luke, and he was around $600. About 3 weeks after ordering him (yes, he wasn't even home yet), Sard was released and I had to have him, and at about $800 he was more expensive than my first doll. After my first doll got here I went to my first meet up and fell in love with a Volks Rose. I ended up putting her on layaway with an ebay seller for $1200 (pretty sure I got scalped bad on that one, because she is now one of the cheaper and less popular Volks SD girls :|). From that point for quite awhile I had some pretty expensive tastes; I really liked SD size dolls the most, and also really loved Volks, so it wasn't unusual for me to pay $400 for just a head, I know I did it with my Yugiri. At $1500, my Kaelin (who I no longer own) was the most expensive doll I've ever bought.

However, somewhere in the last year maybe, my tastes have changed a bit. I have a lot more things to pay for now, and my mind has adjusted to that it seems. I still like Volks dolls, but the ones I just "had to have!" before have pretty much dropped off my list. I think when I broke my "no MSD's, ever!" rule, it changed things for me. I have enough SD size dolls, and now I seem to be only interested in a couple of MSD size ones, and of course MSD's are generally cheaper than their larger counterparts. The last doll I bought was a $300 Leekeworld Mikhaila, and I'm also looking at someday buying a Doll Chateau Bella, who is also around the $300 range. So my dolly spending limit seems to have gone way down, and honestly, me and my bank account are kind of relieved about that!

      I started off looking Luts Honey Delfs, and wanted HDF Muffin as my first doll for awhile. I actually looked at Muffin just a few minutes ago, and discovered I'm really not so enamored with Muffin anymore. xwx;
The first doll I actually bought was second hand (DZ Fei - my Vivica) with some money I had saved up. I was completely in love with her and wouldn't have forgiven myself if I had let her go. The same feeling with my second doll, which, was actually less money- also second hand, she was a RS Li. The price difference was pretty small, but it did go down.
I also purchased two floating heads recently. One is a SoulKid- so it's a BIT pricier- and the other is a RS Lan head. Technically, the purchases I've made have had my price range going down (since I bough only heads, it went: $137 - $130 - $64 - $25), but I still have to buy bodies for the doll, so that kind of gives some variation (Souldoll is going to cost me roughly $200 for the body, whereas the ResinSoul is only going to cost me about $100).

Or do you just go back and forth with each purchase? Buy one expensive, one reasonable, then one expensive?

      I don't really plan on the variation, but it kind of seems to be happening with me. ^^;

I go for the sculpt first, then look at the price. I don't want to go outrageous on dolls, but in my collection I have two $600 dolls, one $300 doll, one $200 doll and two $90. So for me, it fluctuates.

If your first doll was pretty expensive, do you start looking inherently for dolls of more reasonable prices?

No; my first doll was $600. My second $200, third $300, fourth and fifth were $90, and now I just bought an EID woman so another $600. It all depends upon the sculpt. If I like the sculpt enough to save up for it, it doesn't matter about the price.

Or do you just go back and forth with each purchase? Buy one expensive, one reasonable, then one expensive?

That's what tends to happened with me, but I don't mean it to. I buy what I like when I have the money. I just bought my $600 EID, now I am looking at more elfkins which are $85, and the EID Kamau which is $700.

    19. I can't say that there is a consistent upwards trend in my spending - more like a sine wave, with steady rises and falls. I started in the lower segment, went up to the middle range, then back down again, repeating the same pattern again later.
My largest spending was on my SuperGem MD last year. Currently I'm back to the middle range, and as mostly I need bodies (granted, two more dolls on the must-have! wish list), I doubt that my dolly spending will go up again (:
